Isola Pescatori o isola Superiore (Upper Island) - Maggiore Lake
Location: 45°54'1.05N 8°31'16.59E
Isola Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island), or Upper Island because of its more northerly situation than the other islands in the Gulf, is the most picturesque of the Borromean Islands, as well as the only one to be permanently inhabited. Distinctive features of its ancient little village are narrow lanes with characteristic two-storey houses, with long balconies traditionally used for drying fish; the island’s inhabitants earn their living mainly by fishing and tourism.
Its unmistakable skyline is punctuated by the pointed spire of the Church of San Vittore, which rises above the red roofs of the houses; its shore is always occupied by the little boats of its fifty residents. It becomes even more special in the evening, when the whole island is discreetly lit up, a living picture reflected in the calm waters of the lake.

A cruise on Lake Maggiore, to the Borromean Islands, allows us to explore 3 very different places....
Isola Bella features an opulent Pallazo with elaborate gardens.
Isola dei Pescatori (fisherman's island) remains an actual working village, (with a few extra tourists).
Isola Madre, largest of the islands, is most famous for it's English style gardens.

The Borromean Islands are a group of three small islands and two islets in Lago (Lake) Maggiore.
Isola Bella (Beautiful Island) is 320 m long by 400 m wide. Until 1632 the island was occupied by a tiny fishing village. In that year Carlo III Borromeo began the construction of a palace. Today the island is divided between the Palace, its gardens, and a small fishing village. Isola Bella is a popular tourist attraction. Isola dei Pescatori (Fishermen’s Island) is about 375 m long by 100 m wide. It has population of only 25 but it is the only one to be inhabited all year round.

STRESA. The Best Place to go in ITALY. (Lake District)
We spend an afternoon exploring the islands of Stresa! Situated in Northern Italy, Stresa is on Lake Maggiore and surrounded by the Alps! Stresa has a few different islands and we visited two of them.
We started on Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island) where we had a pizza lunch and then explore the small streets. We also flew our drone to get some great overhead footage of the island.
We then made our way over to Isola Bella to spend some time in the palace and the amazing gardens, which are supposed to be one of the best examples of Italian gardens in all of Italy. While there we encountered white peacocks for the first time.
More information about the island, palace and gardens can be found here:

Internationally recognised as the jewel of Lake Maggiore, Stresa is one of the most exclusive tourist destinations on Lake Maggiore. In addition to millions of tourists, the Borromean Islands also enchanted Stendhal, Liszt, and Mendelssohn. Dumas recalled them in “The Count of Montecristo”, Turner and Corot represented them in oil paintings and watercolours, D’Annunzio even tried to rent one. Just across from the town of Stresa (in Italy), the archipelago is easily accessible in just few hours by ferryboat from Locarno or Ascona. It consists of three islands: Isola Bella with its grandiose mansion and terraced gardens, Isola Madre with its luxurious English park, and Isola dei Pescatori, a picturesque fishing village boasting an ancient atmosphere.
Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island): It is the smallest and quaintest of the three islands, and the only one with permanent residents. The restaurants on the island offer menus based on the typical cuisine of the lake.
Isola Bella (Beatiful Island): dominated by its magnificent Baroque palazzo, which is accompanied by a luxuriant Italian-style garden laid out over ten terraces, 37 meters high. The garden displays exotic plants of great rarity and many strikingly lovely flowers, alongside statues, fountains and the Unicorn, depicted in the coat-of-arms of the aristocratic Borromeo family. There are also beautiful white peacocks, free to roam the gardens, which with their regal bearing contribute to giving Isola Bella the flavour of past times.

Visit Isola Bella, the most beautiful of the Borromean Islands
Looking across from Stresa to Isola Bella today it is hard to believe it was once a rocky island, home to a small community of fishermen. However until 1630 Isola Inferiore (as it was previously known) was a world away from the splendour that the Borromeo Family created.
In 1630 Carlo III Borromeo took the first steps to changing the island. He hired an architect to design a castle-type building where the palace currently stands and a more elegant casino at the highest point of the island. Carlo also decided to name the island after his wife, Isabella D’Adda, and it became known as Isola Isabella (later to be shortened to Isola Bella).

Lago Maggiore - Golfo Borromeo

Lake Maggiore - Borromeo Gulf
The Borromeo Gulf with its islands (Isola Bella, Isola Madre, Isola Pescatori and Isolino San Giovanni) is the most famous part of Lake Maggiore which is overlooked by the well-known towns of Stresa, Baveno, Feriolo and Verbania.
The Gulf experienced its development and consequent notoriety thanks to the Borromeo family who transformed it into a real fiefdom.
In 1500 the Borromeo family built their palace on the Isola Madre surrounded by a large English park, while in 1600 they built a new palazzo on the Isola Bella with its beautiful Italian gardens. The Pescatori island is the island that has been and is most populated by fishermen who now also have very good restaurants where you can eat fish from the lake. Finally, right in front of Verbania-Pallanza there is the islet San Giovanni famous for having hosted the famous music teacher Arturo Toscanini for a long time.
A boat tour to the Borromeo Gulf, with optional excursions on the islands, is an extraordinary and unforgettable experience both day and evening with its lights.
If then that evening there is also the opportunity to enjoy a firework display, then the tour becomes unmissable.
In addition, the resorts that overlook the Borromeo Gulf (Stresa, Baveno, Feriolo and Verbania) offer the possibility of beautiful and long restaurants along the lakeside promenade, excellent restaurants and hotels, and an interesting and lively shopping. All surrounded by the beautiful and majestic mountains of the Alps.
