The Bahamas contains over 700 islands and 2,000 cays totaling 100,000 square miles. Not as small as you might think, this popular Caribbean destination is overflowing with culture and history. Get a comprehensive tour of Old Nassau, the historic center of The Bahamas. Because of the ports treasured safe harbor, the city preserves its British colonial style buildings and architecture. Originally built to protect the island from attacks, there are three forts in the area, including Fort Charlotte. For a tasty and authentic bite, stop by McKenzies in Potters Cay. Serving up a fresh conch salad, this hotspot presents the centerpiece and Bahamian staple of the islands fish dishes. Dive right back into more culture at The National Arts Gallery of the Bahamas, a beautifully restored building housing both modern and native Bahamian art. Stroll down the Queens Staircase, which was originally built as a means of escape for soldiers in a nearby fort. Now it is used for tourists who marvel at the fact that every part of the staircase, as well as its adjacent passageway, were carved by hand. End this historic tour of charming Old Nassau with a walk on the beach at sunset.

Nassau is the capital, largest city, and commercial centre of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The city has an estimated population of 274,400 as of 2016, or 70 percent of the entire population of the Bahamas. Lynden Pindling International Airport, the major airport for the Bahamas, is located about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) west of Nassau city centre, and has daily flights to major cities in the United States, the Caribbean, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The city is located on the island of New Providence, which functions much like a business district. Nassau is the site of the House of Assembly and various judicial departments and was considered historically to be a stronghold of pirates. The city was named in honour of William III of England, Prince of Orange-Nassau.
Nassau's modern growth began in the late eighteenth century, with the influx of thousands of American Loyalists and their slaves to the Bahamas following the American Revolutionary War. Many of them settled in Nassau (then and still the commerce capital of the Bahamas) and eventually came to outnumber the original inhabitants.

Bahamas Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Bahamas.
Nassau is the capital of the island of New Providence which is one of the many islands of the Bahaman archipelago that extends for almost a thousand kilometres between Cuba and Florida in the Atlantic Ocean. New Providence is the commercial and political centre and is more commonly known as the Bahamas.Built between 1805 and 1813 in typical American southern style, the pink-coloured buildings of Parliament Square are the headquarters of the Bahamian government. In front of the white columned Neo-Classical parliament building is a noble statue of the English queen, Victoria, as a young girl. The colourful Caribbean Straw Market is a lively place. There are lots of fascinating things to see including skilful craftsmen who carve traditional objects from mahogany. Bags, baskets and hats made of straw are offered as souvenirs. Along the coast there are several caves in which pirates once hid their ill-gotten gains or argued over buried treasure. Cable Beach boasts a multitude of exquisite modern hotel complexes that cater for every need and several of them possess a casino. Naturally, each has its own lavish bathing areas and a vast choice of exciting entertainment. On a small hill on the western outskirts of Nassau is Fort Charlotte, today a popular tourist destination on the periphery of the city The Bahamas: the very name conjures up remote sandy beaches and turquoise blue water, romantic sunsets and tropical nights. A place where fantastic dreams become wonderful reality.

Walking Tour of Nassau Beach and Cigar Factory & Winery Tours | Disney Wonder Vlog
We are in Nassau, Bahamas for the first time and we are freestyling! We love to wander and explore on our own the first time in a new port. After a bit of online research, the only place we knew we wanted to go for sure is Junkanoo Beach, so that is our first stop. It is a short walk to the beach – which is a free public beach – just a few blocks from the port. This beach is great as it is large and has a beautiful view… and the front end view of all of those cruise ships isn’t bad either! Unfortunately for us, it was way too windy and a bit chilly so we did not swim. In fact, we were only two of four people total at this beach with four cruise ships in port! We were very surprised by this as we still enjoyed a stroll on the beach and a quick dip of at least our feet in the water.
Time to walk and explore some more! We find a street full of activity and local craftsmanship. All in one spot is a winery, a chocolate factory, and a cigar factory… so of course, we had to sample them all! The most interesting was the cigar factory where we were able to watch the entire rolling process. And Jason had to buy one to test which he really enjoyed. And what a beautiful area!!

The Bahamas, officially the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, is a country consisting of more than 700 islands, cays, and islets in the Atlantic Ocean; north of Cuba. The designation of Bahamas can refer to either the country or the larger island chain that it shares with the Turks and Caicos Islands. As stated in the mandate/manifesto of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, the Bahamas territory encompasses 470,000 km2 (180,000 sq mi) of ocean space.
Originally inhabited by the Lucayan, a branch of the Arawakan-speaking Taino people, the Bahamas were the site of Columbus' first landfall in the New World in 1492.
Although the Spanish never colonized the Bahamas, they shipped the native Lucayans to slavery in Hispaniola. The islands were mostly deserted from 1513 until 1648, when English colonists from Bermuda settled on the island of Eleuthera.
