Isle of Wight Touring - 29/06/2012
Using our two-day bus tickets to good use on Friday 29th June 2012 travelling on the Island's Southern Vectis Buses from Wootton to Ryde to Brading and two round trips on the 'Downs Tour' Open-Top Bus.
We start the video at the crossing outside Wootton Station on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway and we see WD 'Austerity' 0-6-0ST No.WD198 Royal Engineer arriving and then departing with the first train of the day from Haven Street.
Next, after the first 'Downs Tour' ride - which I couldn't film due to it raining - we travelled to Brading for just a short visit to the restored Signal Box next to the station and see the arrival of an Island Line Train (ex-London Underground Northern Line) arriving from Ryde with a Shanklin-bound service.
After returning to Ryde and having lunch, we embark on the second 'Downs Tour' ride, this time the majority of it was in sunshine. We leave Ryde and travel as far as Ashey taking in Quarr Abbey, Wootton Bridge, Arreton Barns, Amazon World and Newchurch.
Finally, at Ashey, we stand by the entrances to the short tunnel under the main road and see Royal Engineer again first heading for Smallbrook Junction and then returning to Haven Street.

Island Ivatt: A Ride Behind LMS 2MT 41298 on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway - 01/06/2016
The Isle of Wight Steam Railway is one of Britain's most southernly preserved railways, running from the small village of Wootten Bridge, through Havenstreet and Ashey, to a connection with the Island's mainline network at Smallbrook Junction. The line is an extremely popular tourist attraction and is mostly known to enthusiasts for its two LB&SCR Stroudley A1X 'Terrier' 0-6-0Ts and sole-surviving LSWR O2 0-4-4T W24 'Calbourne', but the little branchline took on a new task in 2008.
The Ivatt Trust, who were previously based at Buckinghamshire Railway Centre, decided to move their LMS Ivatt Class 2MT 'Mogul' 46447 and two LMS 2MT Tanks 41298 and 41313 to the railway that year, with the intention of restoring all three engines to working order. They have since donated the engines to the railway. The 'big brother' to the 2-6-2s, 46447 was shipped back to mainland in 2012 for restoration on the East Somerset Railway, which was completed in late 2014. But the crowning glory for the Isle of Wight came at the back end of last year, when 41298 hauled its first train since it was withdrawn by British Railways in July 1967.
I visited the Island on 1st June, just after the railway's 'Spring Steam Gala' the weekend before (which was to have featured visiting GWR/LT 4575 'Small Prairie' 2-6-2T 5521) I went specifically to ride behind the Ivatt Tank, and hopefully capture some lineside shots before heading off to see the rest of the Island. I boarded the 10:18 service out of Wootten down to the other end of the line, before filming the return journey back up from Smallbrook. Also in service that day was LB&SCR Stroudley A1X 'Terrier' W8 'Freshwater'.
I hope you all enjoy the video. I thoroughly recommend the Isle Of Wight Steam Railway and congratulations to the Ivatt Trust for bringing another one of these trusty tanks back to life. 41313 next! Feel free to comment and subscribe!

Isle Of Wight Steam Railway - Red Timetable - 04/09/13
As mentioned in my video of 60163 Tornado at Upton Scudamore, dad and I recently took a trip to the Isle of Wight. We stayed from Tuesday 3rd September, arriving on the 08:45 ferry from Lymington, until Friday 6th, leaving on the 17:55 ferry from Yarmouth. The first two days were spent on the island's steam railway, spending one day riding up and down the line and the other filming from the lineside. The Tuesday and Wednesday saw the line running to their 'Red' timetable, which meant a two-train service, worked by LB&SCR A1 Class 0-6-0T no.W8 'Freshwater' and Hunslet Austerity 0-6-0ST no.WD198 'Royal Engineer'. The Thursday and Friday saw the 'Blue' timetable in operation, which meant only a one-train service, worked by 'Royal Engineer', although we spent those two days doing other things away from the railway.
This second video is the last of two from our trip and features lineside shots of 'Freshwater' and 'Royal Engineer', taken from various places along the line.
Shots by loco include:
Royal Engineer:
- Seen passing through Ashey with a train for Smallbrook Junction, the former station building is seen in the background, now a private home.
- Later seen rolling through Ashey Halt itself, having reached the summit of the climb from Smallbrook Junction.
- Moving on to Deacons Lane just east of Ashey Halt, she catches me out as she sneaks up with a train for Smallbrook Junction.
- Later seen accelerating away from Smallbrook Junction, passing over a small level crossing on a bridleway just off of Ashey Road.
- Heading a train for Wootton, she is seen cruising past and under Rowlands Lane, just east of Havenstreet Station.
- Our final shots of Royal Engineer see her approaching Wootton Station, running round and then departing for Havenstreet.
Freshwater:
- Seen rolling past Ashey Halt and over the level crossing with a train for Wootton, I did have a shot of her before this, passing through Ashey Halt itself.....but I accidentally deleted it, oops!
- Very nearly catching me out as she passes over the level crossing just off of Ashey Road.
- Then later returning past the same location, my dad's arm is also seen as he tries to get out of the shot after taking his photos....it didn't quite work.
- Climbing up out of Havenstreet, passing under Rowlands Lane bridge.
- Our final sequence shows the arrival, run round and departure at Wootton, taking from both the level crossing just outside the station and from the station itself.
Filmed on a Panasonic HDC-HS900 with a Pro Sound L92AA microphone.
Enjoy.
