There are two identical Iwo Jima Memorials in America. The Original molds for the Iwo Jima Memorial in Virginia were used to create an exact duplicate memorial that graces the grounds of the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, Texas. American commentary. Six years work, 110 foot high model of five marines and one navy medical corpsman putting the flag on the first Japanese territory captured, based on the famous picture by photographer Joe Rosenthal. Sculptor Felix de Weldon is using the three survivors of the team and photographs of the other men for his 32 foot high figures. The plaster model weighs over 100 tons. The finished bronze figures, the largest of their type in the world will be the first national memorial to the Marine Corps heroes of all wars.

The next memorial you will find on the left is the memorial to the battle of Iwo Jima, replicating a scene that is familiar to everyone, four soldiers erecting the American flag on top of Mt Suribachi. The memorial is 32 ft high, and just a bit smaller than the memorial in Washington D.C. The faces on the statue represent two local boys that fought on Iwo Jima; Russell Severson & Gerald Ziehme

The American amphibious invasion of Iwo Jima, a key island in the Bonin chain roughly 575 miles from the Japanese coast, was sparked by the desire for a place where B-29 bombers damaged over Japan could land without returning all the way to the Marianas, and for a base for escort fighters that would assist in the bombing campaign.
Iwo Jima is a small speck in the Pacific; it is 4.5 miles long and at its broadest point 2.5 miles wide. Iwo is the Japanese word for sulfur, and the island is indeed full of sulfur. Yellow sulfuric mist routinely rises from cracks of earth, and the island distinctly smells like rotten eggs.

Soldiers Walk is the largest contiguous Memorial Park in the United States dedicated to our Veterans and all those have served since the Revolutionary War.

The park is 1/2 mile long and has 23 memorials with 42 statues depicting American conflicts throughout our history.

The park is funded completely by private donations. The people of Arcadia donate their time and services to maintain the park.

Each year tens of thousands of people visit the park and on the first weekend of every August, the park hosts Ashley For The Arts, drawing crowds of over 30,000 for this event alone.

Harlingen, Texas

Harlingen is a city in Cameron County in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley of south Texas, United States, about 30 miles from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The city covers more than 40 square miles and is the second largest city in Cameron County, as well as the sixth largest in the Rio Grande Valley. As of the 2010 census the city had a population of 64,849, for a growth rate of 12.5% since the 2000 census. It is the city with the least expensive cost of living in the United States.
Harlingen is a principal city of the Brownsville–Harlingen metropolitan area, which is part of the larger Brownsville-Harlingen-Raymondville combined statistical area, included in the Matamoros–Brownsville metropolitan area.
