Born to a prominent Ceylonese family with a strong association with the legal profession, Jayewardene was the eldest of 11 children, of Hon. Justice Eugene Wilfred Jayewardene KC, a Chief Justice of Ceylon and Agnes Helen Don Philip Wijewardena daughter of Tudugalage Muhandiram Don Philip Wijewardena a wealthy merchant. His younger brothers included Dr Hector Wilfred Jayewardene, QC and Dr Rolly Jayewardene, FRCP. His uncles were the Colonel Theodore Jayewarden, Justice Valentine Jayewardene and the Press Baron D. R. Wijewardena.
He received his primary education at Bishop's College, Colombo and attended Royal College, Colombo for his secondary education. At Royal College he played for the college cricket team, debuting in the Royal-Thomian series in 1925, and captained the rugby team at the annual Royal-Trinity Encounter (which later became known as the Bradby Shield Encounter). Excelling in both studies,sports and Club and Societies.He was the first Chairman/Secretary in Royal College Social Services League in 1921 and he became the head prefect in 1925 and also represented the school in football and boxing; he was also a member of the cadet corps. He would later serve as the Secretary of the Royal College Union.
Jayewardene entered the University College, Colombo, in 1926 he attained a distinguished academic record and showed a keen interest in sports. In 1928 he entered Colombo Law College and passed out as an advocate, starting his practice in the unofficial bar, for a brief period. Jayewardene converted from Christianity to Buddhism in his youth.

MercedesTrophy National Final Sri Lanka 2019
DIMO, Sri Lanka’s automotive pioneer and the Authorized General Distributor for Mercedes-Benz in the island, successfully concluded the MercedesTrophy National Final Sri Lanka 2019, the most luxurious golfing event in the country’s calendar. The annual golfing extravaganza, open for all Mercedes-Benz owners, was held on 6th July at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) where golfing enthusiasts from across Sri Lanka battled each other to be crowned the national winner.

Signing of the Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord

The Indo-Sri Lanka Peace Accord was an accord signed in Colombo on 29 July, 1987, between Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sri Lankan President J. R. Jayewardene. The accord was expected to resolve the ongoing Sri Lankan civil war. Under the terms of the agreement, Colombo agreed to a devolution of power to the provinces, the Sri Lankan troops were to be withdrawn to their barracks in the north and the Tamil rebels were to surrender their arms.

STORYLINE:
Sri Lankan officials are battling shock and logistical problems as they try to direct food and medicine to areas hardest hit by a massive tsunami, the nation''s foreign minister said Tuesday.
Lakshman Kadirgamar, who was on an official visit to Beijing, also said Tuesday that he expected the death toll in his disaster-ravaged country to go higher than the current 15-thousand estimated dead.
The Sri Lankan National Disaster Management Centre said the death toll had risen to 18,706 including in rebel-held areas.
Kadirgamar said he was aware the US was sending helicopters and there were ships being sent by India, but he added, they''re having a few problems with coordinating.
Sri Lanka''s Health Ministry said it was dispatching 500 physicians by helicopter to the affected area to treat the wounded and to ensure medical care in case of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea.
Four aircraft - including an airborne surgical hospital from Finland - were to arrive in Colombo with aid and medical supplies, according to the Red Cross.
A German aircraft is bringing in a water purification plant.
Britain is sending a logistical support team, and Japanese health officials and medicine are on the way.
India has sent two ships carrying thousands relief packages consisting of blankets, saris, water buckets, and pots and pans.
China on Tuesday sent a plane carrying 610-thousand US dollars worth of tents, blankets and food plus 200-thousand US dollars in cash to India and Sri Lanka, the government''s Xinhua News Agency said.
China has made an initial pledge of 2.6 (m) million US dollars in aid to the affected countries.
One million people have been displaced in massive flooding unleashed by Sunday''s magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the coast of Indonesia.
The tidal waves and flooding have also uprooted land mines in the war-torn country, threatening to kill or maim aid workers and survivors who are attempting to return to what''s left of their homes.

Sri Lanka Army SLLI Colour Parade
1. The birth of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry dates back to 1st April 1881, when the Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers was formed. When the Ceylon Army was formed on 10th October 1949, and with its formation, a Regular Infantry Battalion was raised as the Ceylon Infantry Regiment.
2. The Sri Lanka Light Infantry is the pioneer Regiment in the Sri Lanka Army which has a proud history of 134 years. Since the Regiment was formed in 1881 as Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers, it is grown to a level of 24 Battalions, a Training School and a Regimental Centre which is comprised of about 500 Officers and 15000 Soldiers.
3. The 2nd (Volunteer) Battalion the Sri Lanka Light Infantry was awarded with King’s Colours in 1922, Her Majesty the Queen of England Elizabeth II’s Colours in 1954 and the President’s Colours in 1978 by then President of Sri Lanka HE J R Jayawardena on 10 October 1978. The 1st Battalion the Sri Lanka Light Infantry was awarded with Her Majesty the Queen of England Elizabeth II’s Colours in 1954 and the President’s Colours in 1978, for loyal and exemplary service in the face of enemy in different eras.
4. The Regimental concept was introduced in to the Sri Lanka Army in 1988 and with effect of that, the Regimental Centre of the Sri Lanka Light Infantry was established on 23rd October 1989 in the Army Cantonment at Panagoda, Homagama.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said on Thursday [9-7-20090 it had been ordered by Sri Lanka to scale down relief operations in the island where it has been helping civilian war victims. As a result, the ICRC said it was withdrawing expatriate staff from the battle-scarred northeast which was the focus of the final government offensive against Tamil Tiger rebels that ended in outright victory in May.
The ICRC is in the process of reviewing its set-up and operational priorities in Sri Lanka, said Jacques de Maio, the agencys head of operations for South Asia.
The war started in 1983, when the widow of Solomon Bandaranaike was in power. The Bandaranaike policy was to crack down on the Tamil foreigners, even denying them the right to use the Tamil language, the right to vote, the right to a public education and so on.
In 1987, Sri Lankan President J. R. Jayewardene came up with a brilliant solution He wanted that Rajiv and Prabhakaran to fight against each other. Therefore, Jayewardene made a deal with Rajiv. He would allow the Indian Army to come into Sri Lanka, provided that the Indian Army fought against Prabhakaran.
Now the present Srilankan President Rajpakshe wanted to follow the footsteps of his predecessors to wage a war against all Tamilians, and this will never help him.
Rajpakshe following the national religion Buddhism, must rectify himself with the principles of Buddha in showing kindness to humanity, and follow the good principles of Lord Buddha.
