This week on Realty-V I’m going to share with you my vote for Best Beach Community in Southwest Florida.
When it comes to living in a beach community… there’s the beach… and then there’s SANIBEL!
Sanibel and Captiva Islands offer a different sort of beach living… it’s the luxury of isolation in paradise with crystal blue waters, beaches all around, immersion in the arts, and the natural beauty and wonder of marine life without any billboards or big brand commercial businesses.
Yes that’s right. They are VERY particular about keeping the islands feeling like – well, Islands. Imagine that!
One huge benefit for families is the school system. Only residents of the island can send their children to Sanibel School, which is a great PUBLIC school!
But don’t worry, if you live on the mainland, you can send your kiddos to Sea School in the summer where they will learn ALL about the beaches and marine life. You’ll be amazed with how enthralled they’ll be (and how much they’ll teach you!)
There are no billboards or bright neon signs on Sanibel, and no stoplights. This is all by design, to protect and preserve the natural ecosystem. It wasn’t something that happened by chance; this began about 50 years ago when residents saw their community was as risk of commercialism and they drew a line in the sand.
Another fun fact - The maximum speed limit on Sanibel is 35 MPH! So NO one is in too much of a hurry and a lot of folks ride bikes over driving their cars. Wouldn’t THAT be a great choice to be able to make every day?
If you want to make Sanibel your home, be prepared to spend at least half a million… homes prices range from about $500,000 to $20 million.
If that’s outside your comfort zone, there are plenty of other options in Fort Myers that are just a 10-minute drive away.

Miles of white beaches are located throughout Sanibel and nearby Captiva island. Most beaches have nearby parking, restrooms, showers, grills, picnic tables and of course, miles and miles of sand. Some beaches have gentle waves perfect for little children - others have a bigger surf to slash and swim in the sun kissed Gulf.
Enjoy miles of scenic bike paths and walking paths that meander along the gulf and wind through wildlife habitat and quiet neighborhoods.
Sanibel is a barrier island sanctuary where over 67 percent of the lands on the island are protected.The J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge is second only to beaches as the island's top attraction, and is one of the top 5 most visited refuges in the US. Tram tours are the best and most eco friendly option with little impact on the environment, plus your experienced guides will help you spot wildlife that most visitors would never see on their own or would be able to identify.
