Japan Trains: Hokkaido - Minami Chitose in the Snow
Train watching at Minami-Chitose station during a snow storm. Minami-Chitose station is located on the Chitose Line, which forms part of the direct route to Hakodate. It is also the junction of the lines to New Chitose Airport and the Sekisho Line, for trains towards Obihiro & Kushiro.

A ride onboard a commuter train operated by JR Hokkaido. This train comprises two 3-car 733-0 series EMUs linked together with a walkway in between, hence the two unused driver cabs.
The train is operating on a semi-rapid Ishikari Liner service bound for Otaru, departing Sapporo at 9:28am.

Hakodate Station 函館駅 is a railway station on the Hakodate Main Line in Hakodate, Hokkaido, Japan, operated by the Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido).
The Hakuchō 白鳥 and Super Hakuchō スーパー白鳥 are Japanese limited express train services which operate between Shin-Aomori and Hakodate via the undersea Seikan Tunnel 青函トンネル.

JR Hokkaido is extending the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate to Sapporo, planned to open in fiscal year 2030. Tunnelling work on the 5,265 m (17,274 ft) Murayama tunnel, situated about 18 kilometres (11 mi) north of Shin-Hakodate station is proposed to commence by March 2015, and be completed by March 2021. If Hokkaido Shinkansen services are ultimately able to be operated at speeds of up to 360 km/h (225 mph), the estimated journey time from Tokyo to Sapporo would be 5 hours and 1 minute.

Winter Rail Travel in Japan on 7 Day JR Pass (Hokkaido / Honshu)
Japan Rail Pass Travel in Winter (our full itinerary found here which includes Hokkaido, the Sapporo Snow Festival and the Otaru Snow festival on the northern island. With help from 'Japan Rail pass by Japan Experience': This entire itinerary takes place over a 7 Day JR Pass for tourists. The journey starts on the mainland, Honshu island, including Osaka, Shirakawa-go, Nagano, the Snow Monkey Onsens, Takayama, Takaragawa onsen, and a short stop at Tokyo. Plus many more journeys and adventures in Japanese Snow. It takes in early February, with similar winter weather to January, and we are also there during the Setsabun Festival to mark the first day of Spring.

The Seishun 18 ticket is one of the most economical travel options available in Japan. This ticket lets you use the entire JR train system for an entire day for only around 2300 yen per person per day. The catch? You can only take local trains. You must also purchase a set of 5 tickets per purchase. However any number of people can use this one set, which means that if there are 5 of you, all you need is one set. JR East-South Hokkaido Pass (Hokkaido Trip 2016)
So this is a simple cut of our Japan trip for 15 days. We've been to breath-taking scenic landscapes, experienced bustling business streets, tasted extremely good food, met with old friends, made ourselves new ones, took our longest train rides, hiked through challenging places and witness cherry blossoms, among other things.
Japan is really a beautiful country. We'll be back.

Japan Travel Guide: First 3 hours in Hokkaido.
After flying into New Chitose airport in Hokkaido I needed to travel to Sapporo Station before transferring to Asahikawa. Along the way I pick up my JR Pass and rented wifi hotspot to help start my amazing travel journey. I documented this journey to show you how first time travels don't have to be stressful!
