Potsdam is the capital and largest city of the German federal state of Brandenburg. It directly borders the German capital, Berlin, and is part of the Berlin/Brandenburg Metropolitan Region. It is situated on the River Havel 24 kilometres (15 miles) southwest of Berlin's city centre. Around the city there are a series of interconnected lakes and cultural landmarks, in particular the parks and palaces of Sanssouci, the largest World Heritage Site in Germany. This film features views from a walk around the city centre of Potsdam and Sanssouci Park. It begins outside the Dorint Hotel Sanssouci Berlin/Potsdam, and heads down Jagerallee past the Jagertor and around city centre streets, highlighting shops, buildings, bars, cafes, the market and general city culture, ambience and infrastructure.

An Autmun fair is in town and there are views of this as well as the famous St. Nikolaikirche Potsdam, Am Alten Markt and its obelisk and the Landesrechnungshof Brandenburg. From here the journey heads into the Dutch Quarter, before heading into Sanssouci Park via Brandenburger Tor. There are then extensive views around Sanssouci Park and Gardens including the stunning gardens, building and statues. There are extensive views of the Weinbergterrassen, Sanssouci Castle, windmill, Potsdam University, Neues Palais and Chinese House, before heading out of the park to Hauptallee Obelisk and Winzerberg Potsdam where the film ends.

Hotel Review: Dorint Potsdam Sanssouci, Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany - October 2018.

The Dorint Potsdam Sanssouci is located in the very picturesque city of Potsdam in the state of Brandenburg, Germany. I stayed there for three nights on a room only basis in October 2018, this cost £250. Unfortunately due to engineering work at the hotel, the electricity for the entire building was being switched off on our last night, meaning we would have had no electricity, elevators, lighting or wifi. The reception even gave us a torch to use on the last night! We complained about this as it is less than expectations for a fairly expensive business hotel such as this one, and we were subsequently moved for our last night to the NH Hotel, which I have reviewed separately.

Despite the problem with the last night and having to change hotels, I will say that I liked this hotel very much. It is not convenient for the tram to the main railway station, but it is well located for walking to Sanssouci park, which is the main attraction here, and is simply stunning, I very much recommend it. The hotel is a 7-10 minute walk to the nearest tram stop at Reiterweg/Alleestrasse and is a 10 minute walk from the Jägertor, which is one of Potsdam's gate arches. Around that area are a number of nice bars and restaurants, including two very good Indian restaurants and an excellent Irish pub.

The hotel is very much geared up for business events and conferences, it wasn't a 'warm' or 'boutique' venue, but it was very smart and executive in appearance. The bedroom was OK, although it was a little dated decor-wise.

The hotel had an excellent swimming pool, which I liked very much and made good use of.

When we were moved to the NH hotel, the duty manager included for us a free taxi to the NH and a free breakfast at the NH for the inconvenience. I thought that this demonstrated very good customer service on his part, and he should be commended for it.

This film features views of the hotel including the reception / lobby, corridors, a detailed inspection of room 3218 including the bathroom and view over the courtyard, lift / elevator, event area and swimming pool.

I did like this hotel, and would certainly consider staying there again in future, despite the unfortunate circumstances of this trip.

The Brandenburg Gate lies in splendor just north of the Old Market Square in the northeast city of Potsdam, Germany.

Construction of the elegant monument, featuring Roman arches and Corinthian columns, concluded in 1770.

Each of the two sides of this gate reflects the two architects who designed the magnificent structure, and as such are markedly different in appearance.

aus wikipedia: Das Jägertor von 1733 ist das älteste noch erhaltene Potsdamer Stadttor. Es steht in der Achse der Lindenstraße und bildet einen der Stadtausgänge nach Norden. Seinen Namen erhielt es nach dem vor der Stadt liegenden kurfürstlichen Jägerhof. Das Tor war ursprünglich Teil der Potsdamer Stadtmauer, der Akzisemauer, die nicht der Befestigung diente, sondern die Desertion der Soldaten und den Warenschmuggel verhindern sollte. Da die Lindenstraße den einstigen Mauerzug schräg durchschnitt, wurde auch das Jägertor schräg zum Mauerverlauf errichtet.

Nach Abriss der Stadtmauer im Jahr 1869 freistehend, präsentiert sich das Jägertor heute als Pfeilerarchitektur toskanischer Ordnung mit geradem Gebälk und bekrönender Skulpturengruppe. Dargestellt ist ein von Jagdhunden gestellter Hirsch, den flammende Granaten flankieren. Damit ist sowohl der Bezug zum Jägerhof als auch zum militärischen Zweck des Tores verdeutlicht. Architrav und Bekrönung bestehen aus Sandstein, während die rustizierten Pfeiler aus verputztem Ziegelmauerwerk errichtet wurden.

Auf dem kleinen Platz südlich des Jägertores befanden sich früher das Haus des Zolleinnehmers und ein Wachgebäude. Die bauliche Situation zur Entstehungszeit des Jägertores hat Dismar Degen, der Hofmaler Friedrich Wilhelms I., in einem Ölbild festgehalten, welches sich heute im Besitz der Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten befindet. Degen hat in seinem Gemälde die Dimensionen des Tores bewusst übertrieben, so dass das Tor in seiner Darstellung weitaus größer und imposanter wirkt, als es in der Realität der Fall ist.

Heute ist das Tor Teil der Promenade, welche den Verlauf der ehemaligen Stadtmauer nachzeichnet. Im Stadtgrundriss ist der Unterschied zwischen der kompakten Struktur der zweiten barocken Stadterweiterung südlich und der lockeren Villenbebauung nördlich des Jägertores deutlich erkennbar. Seine Funktion als reizvoller Blickpunkt der Lindenstraße ist nach wie vor gegeben.

Lichtspektakel in Potsdam 2019

Ein Lichtspektakel auch in Potsdam. Zwar etwas kleiner und nur drei Tage am 1. 11. bis 3. 11, aber leider macht das Wetter nicht ganz so mit, aber es ist sehenswert. So ca. 30 Lichtelemente und schöne Häuser werden angestrahlt, wie Orangerieschloss im Park Sanssouci, das Jägertor, Nikolaikirche, Landtag Brandenburg, Historische Mühle, u.s.w. sowie am Rande gibt es bestimmte Buden, es gibt’s zu essen und zu trinken, oder auch das erste Licht-Malerei-Duett am Bahnhof. Also, es lohnt sich. Potsdam ist eine Reise wert.

Of the city gates that once led into Potsdam, only three have been preserved today.

The Nauener Tor is one of these three gates and wears its age very well.

Nauener Tor is one of the three preserved gates of Potsdam, Germany. It was built in 1755 and is the first example of the influence of English Gothic Revival architecture in Continental Europe. The first Nauener Tor was built around 1720 about 400 metres away from the current site.

The second gate was built in 1733 at the current site. In 1755 the gate was rebuilt in its current form by the architect Johann Gottfried Büring based on a sketch by Frederick II. Originally there was a city wall connecting the Nauen gate with the other two gates, the Jägertor and the small Brandenburg Gate.

Today the three Potsdam gates are connected by a promenade, instead of a city wall. Nauener Tor is located in close proximity to the Dutch Quarter. Its users were the military and merchants, craftsmen and administrations. Today the square in front of the Nauener Tor has a high density of cafes, restaurants and bars is a popular meeting point of people in Potsdam and their guests. Tram tracks lead directly through Nauener Tor.

„Potsdam, ein Paradies für meine Kamera“ - Sonderausstellung im Potsdam Museum

„Potsdam, ein Paradies für meine Kamera“ heißt die neue Sonderausstellung mit rund 300 Fotografien von Max Baur, die bis 26. August im Potsdam Museum zu sehen sein wird.

Max Baur begann seine fotografische Laufbahn mit dem Genre der Landschaftsfotografie. Ab 1928 lebte er in Wernigerode und schulte seinen Blick für Licht- und Schattenspiele in der Umgebung des Harzes. Mit seinem Umzug nach Potsdam 1934 begann Baur sich der Architekturfotografie zu widmen. Hier fand er die Voraussetzungen und Motive in einer einmaligen architektonischen Geschlossenheit, die ihn nachhaltig inspirierten: „Potsdam ist für mich die größte Fundgrube, die ich bisher entdeckte“, schrieb er in einem Brief.
