Crafted by Hand in Jaipur, India - Volume 1 Blue Pottery
A collaboration between Lost & Found and Inde Rooh.
I've been itching to show the famous Jaipur Blue Pottery from beginning to end since 2013. So on this 2017 return to Jaipur, I took the opportunity.
Inde Rooh is a hand-printed clothing brand I'm here working with on some projects. This felt like a chance to tell an artistic story rather than sell a dress so we went for it.
Huge thanks to DP Anh Tran for traveling from Vietnam to assist me on the overall project list. Thanks to master potter Romgopal Ji and his staff for letting us shoot for a day.
If you want to see more of the work we're doing for Inde Rooh - please check out inderooh.com in November when I re-launch that site.

Art of Blue Pottery in Jaipur, India (Pottery Showcase)
The age old art of blue pottery is being kept alive in Rajasthan.
Blue pottery, an art that has existed in India since several centuries. The origin of this art was in Persia and Afghanistan. Today master craftsman, Mr. Kirpal Singh Shekhawat, is keeping it alive in Jaipur.
It was an old art came from Persia and Iran invented blue pottery in the 15th century. This art came with the Mughals in India and remained in Delhi and then in Jaipur. And now only in Jaipur. So how is a blue pottery piece made? While molding, this was filled with ash. He's taking it out.
These two were separately molded - now they will be joined. After putting chalk powder we put Ingo on to keep it more white and clean. This is dry and ready to be painted. Now this is designing, drawing a motif and coloring. In high temperature, this dark brown will turn into turquoise blue. This is the last process. This is where the pottery is finished under heat. This is final. These are most popular items. I am Subashish Bharuka, showing you India.

Blue Pottery is widely recognized as a traditional craft of Jaipur, though it is Turko-Persian in origin. The name 'blue pottery' comes from the eye-catching blue dye used to color the pottery.
Jaipur blue pottery, made out of a similar frit material to Egyptian faience, is glazed and low-fired. No clay is used: the 'dough' for the pottery is prepared by mixing quartz stone powder, powdered glass, Multani Mitti (Fuller's Earth), borax, gum and water. Another source cites Katira Gond powder (a gum), and saaji (soda bicarbonate) as ingredients.
Some of this pottery is semi-transparent and mostly decorated with bird and other animal motifs. Being fired at very low temperature makes them fragile. The range of items is primarily decorative, such as ashtrays, vases, coasters, small bowls and boxes for trinkets. The colour palette is restricted to blue derived from the cobalt oxide, green from the copper oxide and white, though other non-conventional colours, such as yellow and brown are sometimes included.

Blue Pottery of Jaipur - A Slice of Persia
The blue pottery of Jaipur is one of India's best known ceramic heritage, having its roots in Persia. Known for its bright turquoise colour, the tradition of blue ceramics has also deep roots in Indian soil. It was produced when alkaline soil was mixed with copper and heated it producing the turquoise blue colour. It was quite popular in Buddhist Period as 'blue' was the colour of peace and calm in Buddhism. There is every likelihood that the art reached West Asia through Afghanistan from India with the spread of Buddhism. Later it was Muslims, who brought in new ideas and technology. At this juncture, a remarkable discovery was made 'Gila Lazwart' or cobalt oxide, which did wonders to the earthen pots. It was used to glaze and paint pots which on heating assumed a deep blue colour.
In the beginning of the 14th century AD, Chinese learnt the Gila Lazwart technique from Iran. In the succeeding centuries the Muslims entered India as traders and rulers. The idea reached first Deccani courts, such as Bidar and Golkonda. In the next century, Humayun, the Mughal Emperor took refuge in Iran and Noor Jehan hailed from there. They brought the idea to their courts and trading centres, such as Delhi, Multan, Lahore and Agra.
It came to Jaipur via Kashmir. The Jaipur blue pottery is made out of an Egyptian paste, and is glazed in low fire. The pottery is opaque and mostly decorated with birds and animal motifs. When the city of Jaipur was founded in 1772 AD, its founding father Sawai Jai Singh I invited artists from all over India to establish their home in Jaipur. Soon Jaipur became a thriving centre of blue pottery art. In the the 19th century, under the patronage of Sawai Ram Singh II, blue pottery making got further boost.

Jaipur Blue Pottery - the charming hand-painted ceramics of the Pink City have a long history. Hear Anil Ji speak about the process of making blue pottery.
The original technique came from Iran but Jaipur has adopted it and made it, its own. The tiles are hand painted and then baked at high temperatures. The blue color is the most popular but yellow is not too far behind. You can see the play of colors and designs on display. You can but plates, cups, bowls, mugs, tiles or even jewelry in Jaipur Blue Pottery.
