The Indian Armed Forces have proud heritage and a glorious history built on the foundation of extraordinary courage and valour of their war heroes. Over the years, India as a nation has earned laurels in various actions.
A need was felt to create a museum to highlight the traditional bravery and trace the various milestones in the evolution of the Indian Army since independence and also to commemorate war heroes especially from the state of Rajasthan, who have distinguished themselves on the battlefield by their awe inspiring sagas of grit and valour.
The Jaisalmer War Museum, popularly known as 'JWM' was conceptualised to unfold India's rich military history and showcase real war efforts as they happened in the past. It takes the visitors through an eventful journey right into the epicenter of combat, while giving them a real feel of the courage, determination, fortitude and resolve of India's brave soldiers. The Jaisalmer War Museum aims to promote greater awareness of the saga of sacrifice made by heroes of the Indian Army, in particular, and Indian Armed Forces in general by opening its gates free of cost to all visitors. The museum is open on all days including Sundays and public holidays from 9AM to 7PM.
The Jaisalmer War Museum is located 10 km short of Jaisalmer on the Jaisalmer - Jodhpur Highway. The inauguration of the Museum in the Golden Jubilee Commemoration Year of 1965 Indo Pak War is also a tribute to all soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice. The entry to the Jaisalmer War Museum is open to and free for all visitors.

Jaisalmer War Museum, also known as Laungewala War Memorial was established in the military station designed with the view of honouring the war heroes. It embraces the bravery and sacrifices of the Indian Army. On 24 August 2015, the museum was inaugurated and declared to the Nation. It took place on the day of Golden Jubilee commemoration of the India-Pakistan war in 1965. The museum popularly known as JWM, houses two information display halls, an audio-visual room and a souvenir shop. It also has an Honour wall that has engraved the names of gallantry award winners of the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra. Along with tanks, guns and military vehicles, the display has a repertoire of trophies and vintage equipment.
The primary structure was presented a Hunter Aircraft by the Indian Air Force that destroyed the enemy tank columns during the Battle of Laungewala. The place also includes Murals of soldiers who lost their lives during the war and the weapons used for the same. The audio-visual room screens the movie about the battle in which Major Kuldip Singh Chandpuri, a recipient of Maha Vir Chakra gives a detailed account of the soldiers who fought the war. Located 2 hours away from Jaisalmer, on the Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway, the memorial is a salute to Indian Army.

This war museum which is the first-of-its-kind on the western front traces the evolution of the Indian Army and covers in detail its inspiring contribution in mainly 1965 Indo-Pak War and 1971 Longewala battle including all combat operations and other nation building activities.

जैसलमेर जिला मुख्यालय से करीब 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर जोधपुर-बीकानेर मार्ग पर अवस्थित युद्ध संग्रहालय (वार म्यूजियम) एशिया के 25 बेहतरीन संग्रहालयों में से एक है
विश्व के सर्वश्रेष्ठ 25 संग्रहालयों में भारत का कोई संग्रहालय स्थान नहीं बना पाया है. भारतीय सेना की गौरव गाथा को संजोने के लिए मुख्यालय से 10 किमी की दूरी पर सैन्य स्टेशन पर जैसलमेर युद्ध संग्रहालय का निर्माण करवाया गया. सेना की दक्षिणी कमान और जोधपुर आधारित कोणार्क कोर की कल्पना के साकार रूप का उद्घाटन सेना की दक्षिण कमान के तत्कालीन जीओसी मेजर जनरल अशोक सिंह ने किया था.
संग्रहालय में भारतीय सेना के अदम्य साहस, सैनिकों की व्यक्तिगत वीरता और उनके द्वारा दिए गए चरम बलिदान की गौरव गाथा को बेहतरीन ढंग से संजोया गया है. म्यूजियम में पाकिस्तान के खिलाफ वर्ष 1965 और 1971 के युद्धों में प्राप्त विजय की गाथा का जीवंत प्रदर्शन किया गया है.
संग्रहालय परिसर में 15 मीटर के पोल पर शान से लहराता विशालकाय तिरंगा दूर से ही भारतीय सेना की अनन्य देशभक्ति का संदेश प्रसारित करता है. युद्ध संग्रहालय के विशाल अहाते में पाकिस्तान से युद्ध में जीते गए 2 शेरमन और एक टी-59 टैंक रखे गए हैं. ऐसे ही पाकिस्तान की एक रिकवरी गाड़ी, भारत का एक हंटर एयरक्राफ्ट, एक टी-55 टैंक, 2 विजयंत टैंक, एक-एक एंटी एयरक्राफ्ट गन, पैक हाउस 75/24, आरसीएल गन, एयर डिफेंस राडार और बी.टी.आर. 60 को प्रदर्शित किया गया है.
संग्रहालय में चल चित्र के जरिए युद्ध की यादों को ताजा किया गया है और इस प्रस्तुति में उस युद्ध के नायक मेजर कुलदीप सिंह चांदपुरी युद्धकालीन परिस्थितियों के बारे में जानकारी देते हैं.
यहां व्यवस्थित शॉप के साथ जलपान गृह की सुविधा मुहैया करवाई गई है. संग्रहालय में दो हॉल लोंगेवाला हॉल और इंडियन आर्मी हॉल बनाए गए हैं. जैसलमेर भ्रमण पर आने वाले सैलानियों विशेषकर देसी पर्यटकों के लिए यह संग्रहालय आकर्षण का एक अतिरिक्त केन्द्र बन गया है.
जोधपुर अथवा बीकानेर से आने वाले सैलानी मार्ग में रुककर विशेषकर जैसलमेर से प्रस्थान करते समय इसका दीदार करना नहीं भूलते. स्थानीय गाइड्स व ट्रेवल एजेंट्सभी उन्हें यह युद्ध संग्रहालय देखने की सलाह देते हैं.

The entry to the Jaisalmer War Museum is open to and free for all visitors. The museum has already become a popular tourist attraction in the Jodhpur - Jaisalmer tourist circuit. Chronology :- The annals of Indian military history are testimony to the glorious past and the victorious moments experienced by the Indian Army since independence. There was a need felt to record the military war effort and recollect the sacrifice of India's brave soldiers. The idea of establishing a War Museum at Jaisalmer in the state of Rajasthan was mooted by Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews, AVSM, VSM, General Officer Commanding, Konark Corps, with a view to showcase India's military history and war time experiences. Jaisalmer district was chosen for its rich martial traditions and for being witness to numerous battles including the famous Battle of Laungewala in 1971. The task of setting up the Jaisalmer War Museum was taken up as a challenge by Jaisalmer Military Station, under the able guidance of Lieutenant General Bobby Mathews, AVSM, VSM who supervised every aspect personally and facilitated to transform the idea into reality. The site of the Museum was a barren piece of flat ground, within the confines of Jaisalmer Military Station. Today, Jaisalmer War Museum stands proudly against the famed background of Jaisalmer Military Station with every bit of effort that has gone into its making, doing justice to the sacrifice of India's war heroes. Laungewala Hall:- The Laungewala Hall is one of the most important attractions of the Jaisalmer War Museum which showcases the famous Battle of Laungewala in the desert sector. The Hall showcases the progression of battle as it took place on the eventful night of 4 December 1971. The events that took place on that fateful night and the furious battle that followed are inscribed on the walls of the Hall. The Hall also displays Indian Army operations on Eastern and Western Sectors during Indo-Pak War 1971. The 106mm RCL Gun displayed in the Central Foyer reminds us of its vital role in stopping the initial armour assault during the Battle of Laungewala Indian Army Hall :- The Indian Army hall showcases the glorious heritage of Indian Army since its inception and glorifies the famous wars fought in 1947-48, 1965 and 1999 (Kargil). The Hall displays memorable events highlighting bravery, courage and sacrifice of India's soldiers for whom it was always Country before Self . The Hall also displays arms and ammunition captured, as also equipment used during various wars by the Indian Army.
