Colorado: Grand Junction, Colorado National Monument
Colorado National Monument (locally referred to as The Monument) is a National Park Service unit near the city of Grand Junction, Colorado. Spectacular canyons cut deep into sandstone, and even granite–gneiss–schist, rock formations. This is an area of desert land high on the Colorado Plateau, with pinion and juniper forests on the plateau. The park hosts a wide range of wildlife, including red-tailed hawks, golden eagles, ravens, jays, desert bighorn sheep, and coyotes.
There are magnificent views from trails and the Rim Rock Drive, which winds along the plateau - as well as from the campground.
Nearby are the Book Cliffs and the largest flat-topped mountain in the world, the Grand Mesa.
Its feature attraction is Monument Canyon, which runs the width of the park and includes rock formations such as Independence Monument, the Kissing Couple, and Coke Ovens. The monument includes 20,500 acres (32 square miles), much of which has been recommended to Congress for designation as wilderness.
This video only showed the area around the north gate as the weather was not suitable for a drive through on the date of the visit.
Elk Creek Campground, Gunnison Colorado
Take a drive with us through Elk Creek Campground... It is on the North shore of beautiful Blue Mesa Reservoir. This lake is Colorado's largest body of water with 96 miles of shoreline and the largest Kokanee Salmon fishery in the United States.
The campground sits an altitude of 7,540 feet, and is surrounded by a vast expanse of sagebrush. Trees are scarce because the reservoir gets less than 12 inches of rain a year
Elk Creek is part of the Curecanti National Recreation Area, which was named after a Ute Indian chief of the mid-19th century.
There's a marina adjacent to the campground that's open late spring to early fall. Concession run coin operated showers are nearby, open during summer months.. Cell phone service is limited. Electric hookups are in Loop D only..

ABOUT COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT
Located near Fruita and Grand Junction in Colorado, Colorado National Monument preserves one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.
Plateaus and canyons, erosion-created masterpieces, the Colorado River, short hikes, back country hikes, a 23-mile rim rock drive, camping, picnicking, bicycling, and rock climbing are all awaiting the visitor.
The national monument is pleasantly scenic, not one of the major attractions of the Southwest, but well worth visiting for at least a few hours. The cliffs are made of Entrada/Wingate/Kayenta sandstone layers in various shades of red and white and so the canyons are similar to others in nearby states, especially Canyon de Chelly in Arizona and parts of Canyonlands in Utah.
The establishment of the national monument in 1911 was largely due several years of campaigning by one man, John Otto, who explored the canyons and single-handedly built many miles of trails through the area.
There is one paved road through Colorado National Monument, beginning south of Grand Junction - just 4 miles from the town center, this flat city street (Broadway, later Monument Road) crosses the Colorado River, passes the entrance gate and becomes steep and twisting, round many 15 mph corners and through one tunnel, as it ascends the towering red cliffs. The road (now the Rim Rock Drive) then follows the edge of the Uncompahgre Plateau for 20 miles, giving access to 16 major viewpoints and seven trailheads. Towards the north end it passes the main visitor center and camping area, before winding down equally steeply, through two more tunnels, and eventually re-crossing the Colorado River into Fruita.
That’s just a small part of the adventure and beauty you’ll find here in this beautiful National Park Service unit!
