James River State Park is a state park located along the James River in Buckingham County, Virginia. Opened June 20, 1999, it preserves part of the route of the Kanawha Canal in addition to portions of the river.
One of the many attractions at James River State Park is the park's more than 130 acres (0.53 km2) of native warm season grasses that blanket fields adjacent to the James River. These fields are maintained by periodic prescribed fire to facilitate growth of the native grasses. Very few areas of this size with warm season grasses still exist in the Eastern United States.

Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a magnificent waterfront tract that traces its recorded history to the earliest British settlers of Virginia. Claimed in a 1625 land grant by John Burrows, Four Mile Tree was (and is) unmatched for its commanding, elevated views up and down the James River and across to what today is Williamsburg. So named for the distance of a prominent landmark from Jamestown, Four Mile Tree drew John Burrows and a subsequent who's who of preeminent colonial and early American families to this quintessential estate site. It is again available for the discerning buyer to bring it back to its early American glory.
Four Mile Tree has arguably the most prominently appealing features of any Virginia estate home site available today. Totaling +/-309 acres on three Surry County tax parcels, the Property boasts +/- .95 miles (5,044 feet) of James River frontage, including hundreds of feet of sandy beach, plus +/-1,496 feet of frontage on Swann's Point Road. Exceptional elevations above the James generally range from 60 to 90 feet. Modern conveniences include a +/-225 foot pier/boat house completed in 2009.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

You Bet Your Life: Secret Word - Light / Clock / Smile
Julius Henry Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890 -- August 19, 1977) was an American comedian and film and television star. He is known as a master of quick wit and widely considered one of the best comedians of the modern era. His rapid-fire, often impromptu delivery of innuendo-laden patter earned him many admirers and imitators. He made 13 feature films with his siblings the Marx Brothers, of whom he was the third-born. He also had a successful solo career, most notably as the host of the radio and television game show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, carried over from his days in vaudeville, included quirks such as an exaggerated stooped posture, glasses, cigar, and a thick greasepaint mustache and eyebrows. These exaggerated features resulted in the creation of one of the world's most ubiquitous and recognizable novelty disguises, known as Groucho glasses, a one-piece mask consisting of horn-rimmed glasses, large plastic nose, bushy eyebrows and mustache.
Groucho Marx was, and is, the most recognizable and well-known of the Marx Brothers. Groucho-like characters and references have appeared in popular culture both during and after his life, some aimed at audiences who may never have seen a Marx Brothers movie. Groucho's trademark eye glasses, nose, mustache, and cigar have become icons of comedy—glasses with fake noses and mustaches (referred to as Groucho glasses, nose-glasses, and other names) are sold by novelty and costume shops around the world.
Nat Perrin, close friend of Groucho Marx and writer of several Marx Brothers films, inspired John Astin's portrayal of Gomez Addams on the 1960s TV series The Addams Family with similarly thick mustache, eyebrows, sardonic remarks, backward logic, and ever-present cigar (pulled from his breast pocket already lit).
Alan Alda often vamped in the manner of Groucho on M*A*S*H. In one episode, Yankee Doodle Doctor, Hawkeye and Trapper put on a Marx Brothers act at the 4077, with Hawkeye playing Groucho and Trapper playing Harpo. In three other episodes, a character appeared who was named Captain Calvin Spalding (played by Loudon Wainwright III). Groucho's character in Animal Crackers was Captain Geoffrey T. Spaulding.
On many occasions, on the 1970s television sitcom All In The Family, Michael Stivic (Rob Reiner), would briefly imitate Groucho Marx and his mannerisms.
Two albums by British rock band Queen, A Night at the Opera (1975) and A Day at the Races (1976), are named after Marx Brothers films. In March 1977, Groucho invited Queen to visit him in his Los Angeles home; there they performed '39 a capella. A long-running ad campaign for Vlasic Pickles features an animated stork that imitates Groucho's mannerisms and voice. On the famous Hollywood Sign in California, one of the Os is dedicated to Groucho. Alice Cooper contributed over $27,000 to remodel the sign, in memory of his friend.
In 1982, Gabe Kaplan portrayed Marx in the film Groucho, in a one-man stage production. He also imitated Marx occasionally on his previous TV sitcom Welcome Back, Kotter.
Actor Frank Ferrante has performed as Groucho Marx on stage for more than two decades. He continues to tour under rights granted by the Marx family in a one-man show entitled An Evening With Groucho in theaters throughout the United States and Canada with piano accompanist Jim Furmston. In the late 1980s Ferrante starred as Groucho in the off-Broadway and London show Groucho: A Life in Revue penned by Groucho's son Arthur. Ferrante portrayed the comedian from age 15 to 85. The show was later filmed for PBS in 2001. Woody Allen's 1996 musical Everyone Says I Love You, in addition to being named for one of Groucho's signature songs, ends with a Groucho-themed New Year's Eve party in Paris, which some of the stars, including Allen and Goldie Hawn, attend in full Groucho costume. The highlight of the scene is an ensemble song-and-dance performance of Hooray for Captain Spaulding—done entirely in French.
In the last of the Tintin comics, Tintin and the Picaros, a balloon shaped like the face of Groucho could be seen in the Annual Carnival.
In the Italian horror comic Dylan Dog, the protagonist's sidekick is a Groucho impersonator whose character became his permanent personality.
The BBC remade the radio sitcom Flywheel, Shyster and Flywheel, with contemporary actors playing the parts of the original cast. The series was repeated on digital radio station BBC7. Scottish playwright Louise Oliver wrote a play named Waiting For Groucho about Chico and Harpo waiting for Groucho to turn up for the filming of their last project together. This was performed by Glasgow theatre company Rhymes with Purple Productions at the Edinburgh Fringe and in Glasgow and Hamilton in 2007-08. Groucho was played by Scottish actor Frodo McDaniel.

SUMMARY
=======
Judah Philip Benjamin, QC (August 11, 1811 – May 6, 1884) was a lawyer and politician who was a United States Senator from Louisiana, a Cabinet officer of the Confederate States and, after his escape to the United Kingdom at the end of the American Civil War, an English barrister. Benjamin was the first Jew to be elected to the United States Senate who had not renounced that faith, and was the first Jew to hold a Cabinet position in North America.
Benjamin was born to Sephardic Jewish parents from London, who had moved to St. Croix in the Danish West Indies when it was occupied by Britain during the Napoleonic Wars. Seeking greater opportunities, his family immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in Charleston, South Carolina. Judah Benjamin attended Yale College but left without graduating. He moved to New Orleans, where he read law and passed the bar.
Benjamin rose rapidly both at the bar and in politics. He became a wealthy planter and slaveowner and was elected to and served in both houses of the Louisiana legislature prior to his election by the legislature to the US Senate in 1852. There, he was an eloquent supporter of slavery. After Louisiana seceded in 1861, Benjamin resigned as senator and returned to New Orleans.
He soon moved to Richmond after Confederate President Jefferson Davis appointed him as Attorney General. Benjamin had little to do in that position, but Davis was impressed by his competence and appointed him as Secretary of War. Benjamin firmly supported Davis, and the President reciprocated the loyalty by promoting him to Secretary of State in March 1862, while Benjamin was being criticized for the rebel defeat at the Battle of Roanoke Island.
As Secretary of State, Benjamin attempted to gain official recognition for the Confederacy by France and the United Kingdom, but his efforts were ultimately unsuccessful. To preserve the Confederacy as military defeats made its situation increasingly desperate, he advocated freeing and arming the slaves late in the war, but his proposals were only partially accepted in the closing month of the war. When Davis fled the Confederate capital of Richmond in early 1865, Benjamin went with him. He left the presidential party and was successful in escaping from the mainland United States, but Davis was captured by Union troops. Benjamin sailed to Great Britain, where he settled and became a barrister, again rising to the top of his profession before retiring in 1883. He died in Paris the following year.

William Burton '65, Roger Daly '67, Dirk DeRoos '68, and Paul Stetzer '67 share their experiences as activists working in the voter registration effort of the civil rights movement. Facilitated by Denise Anthony, Associate Professor of Sociology and Research Director, Institute for Security, Technology, and Society, Dartmouth College.
1965 DAM article on Dartmouth students, including some of these speakers, who were engaging in civil rights activism
Speaker Bios
Associate Professor of Sociology Denise Anthony, former Chair (2007--11) of the Sociology Department, currently serves as Research Director of Dartmouth's Institute for Security, Technology, and Society and as a Faculty Affiliate with the Center for Health Policy Research at The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. Her research interests include collective action and trust, economic sociology, and the sociology of health care.
Deeply moved by the Montgomery bus boycott and the Greensboro sit-ins, William Burton '65 participated in 1964 in voter registration work in the Mississippi Summer Project followup. This experience influenced him to remain actively involved in politics throughout his life. In 1991 he ran for and was elected as Town Supervisor of Ossining, New York. Though retiring after three two-year terms, he returned to political service in 2005 upon his election as a Westchester County Legislator. Outside of politics, Mr. Burton's career has included working and owning his own businesses in the publishing and printing industries in New York City.
Roger Daly '67 met Martin Luther King Jr. in 1962 when King spent a week at Groton teaching classes. Strongly influenced by this experience, he later joined the Civil Rights Movement as a volunteer field worker for SNCC in the Mississippi Delta and Selma, Alabama. During this time he was beaten twice and was jailed for standing on the courthouse sidewalk while accompanying Selma residents seeking to register to vote. An ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, Reverend Daly has been a pastoral minister for 41 years. He received his M.Div. from Gordon-Conwell Theological School and his M.Ed. in clinical psychology from the University of New Hampshire.
Dirk DeRoos '68 spent most of the first months of his freshman year not in Hanover, but in Neshoba County, Mississippi. He recalls this experience participating in civil rights work as being both defining and transformational. After graduating from Dartmouth, he earned his J.D. at Indiana University. He then went on active duty as an Army officer with the field artillery before entering private practice. Mr. DeRoos is currently a partner in the Denver office of the international law firm of Faegre Baker Daniels. His courtroom experience, in state and federal court at the trial and appellate levels, often involves claims under Title VII, the ADEA, the ADA, federal and state civil rights and pay statutes, and ERISA.
His experience in Mississippi with the DCU influenced Paul Stetzer '67 to become involved not only in the Civil Rights Movement but also in anti-poverty, anti-war, environmental, and women's and gay rights movements. His career in education has included work with the pre-school anti-poverty program Get Set (while there, he helped found a labor union for that organization's workers), as an environmental educator at the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center, and as a teacher of environmental science at the Germantown Friends School. He has more recently turned to documentary photography with a continuing project entitled Democracy Is Coming.
Napoleon III
Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was the first President of the French Second Republic and, as Napoleon III, the Emperor of the Second French Empire. He was the nephew and heir of Napoleon I. He was the first President of France to be elected by a direct popular vote. However, when he was blocked by the Constitution and Parliament from running for a second term, he organized a coup d'état in 1851, and then took the throne as Napoleon III on 2 December 1852, the forty-eighth anniversary of Napoleon I's coronation.
