Away from the rush of tourists, the island of Rugen offers many interesting historic and landscape features and also unique characteristics. For example the smallest ferry in Germany. The rowing ferry commutes between the jetties of Baabe and Moritzdorf and is operated by muscle power. Characteristic for the island of Rugen are the many thatched cottages and small medieval village churches. #Cape Arkona (German: Kap Arkona) is a 45-metre-high cape on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany. It forms the tip of the Wittow peninsula, just a few kilometres north of the Jasmund National Park. The protected landscape of Cape Arkona, together with the fishing village of Vitt, belongs to the municipality of Putgarten and is one of the most popular tourist destinations on Rügen, receiving about 800,000 visitors annually.
On the cape there are two lighthouses, a navigation tower, two military bunker complexes, the Slavic temple fortress of Jaromarsburg and several tourist buildings (restaurants, pubs and souvenir shops).
Because of its geology and the weathering that occurs here, there are frequent coastal collapses, especially in winter.
Cape Arkona is often referred to as the northernmost point of Rügen, which is not true. Approximately one kilometre to the north-west, there is a point on the steep coast, known as the Gellort, which is a little further north. Directly at the foot of the Gellort is a 165-ton glacial erratic boulder known as theSiebenschneiderstein (Low German: Söbenschniedersteen). The cape offers an impressive view of the island, both from land or sea.

Kap Arkona auf Rügen
Kap Arkona ist eine 43 m hohe, aus Kreide und Geschiebemergel bestehende Steilküste auf der Halbinsel Wittow im Norden der Insel Rügen. Das Flächendenkmal Kap Arkona gehört zur Gemeinde Putgarten und ist eines der beliebtesten Ausflugsziele auf Rügen.
Am Kap befinden sich zwei Leuchttürme, ein Peilturm, zwei Militärbunker, die slawische Jaromarsburg und einige touristische Gebäude (Restaurants, Kneipen, Souvenirläden). Aufgrund der geologischen Beschaffenheit und der Wettereinflüsse kommt es am Kap vorwiegend im Winter immer wieder zu teilweise großen Abbrüchen.

Rujána, tak trochu v očekávání, ale opravdu nádherný a rozmanitý ostrov. Skutečně mohu potvrdit, že co místo, tak unikát. Ať s jedná o složení flóry, nebo teploty a čistoty moře. Projeli jsme jí křížem krážem a i tak jsme ji nedokázali navštívit úplně celou. V Próře jsme bohužel chytili na pláži velice silný a prudký liják doprovázený kroupy se silnou vichřicí a nebylo se kam schovat. Tak na to pozor. Lítají vzduchem stavební materiály, oplocení i sklo z její rekonstrukce. Naštěstí jak se vichřice objeví, tak i zmizí. ( Vyfoceno a natočeno po smršťi jak pokračuje po moři ) Určitě doporučuji mít s sebou po celém ostrově dvě igelitové tašky, kam si zabalíte v tomto případě peněženky, telefony, foťáky a podobné věci. Garantuji vám, že stačí 10 sekund a teče z vás litry vody... Počasí se tu dokáže otočit za pouhých 30min v úplný extrém.

Das Flächendenkmal Kap Arkona, liegt 45 Meter über der Ostsee. Kap Arkona wird meist der Nördlichste Punkt Rügens genannt. Was nicht ganz stimmt. Ungefähr einen Kilometer weiter, am Gellort, befindet sich der Nördlichste Punkt. Sehenswert sind die Bunkeranlagen von Wehrmacht und NVA, die Leuchttürme ( besonders der eckige Leuchtturm von Karl Friedrich Schinkel ), der Peilturm und die Jaromarsburg, aus slawischer Zeit. Einen Spaziergang auf der Steilküste, aus Kreide und Geschiebemergel, bis zum beschaulichen Fischerdorf Vitt sollte man sich nicht entgehen lassen.

The 1939 by director and producer Werner Funck (* Feb. 4th, 1881 † Oct. 6th, 1951) produced short film about history, tourism and culture of the German Baltic island of Rügen presents archaeological peculiarities and the idealized life in the seaside resorts and villages. Not only has the island a good transport connection to the Scandinavian countries, it also connects seasonal life in the holiday centers with the traditional native chalk industry, agriculture and fishing. Still, there is not the planned monumental KdF [Kraft durch Freude Strength through Joy] resort on the Prorer Wiek.
The landscape is shaped by stone-age burial mounds, the economically important chalk cliffs and the Rügen fishing. Okt. 1951) hergestellte Kurzfilm über Geschichte, Touristik und Kultur der deutschen Ostsee-Insel Rügen präsentiert archäologische Besonderheiten sowie das idealisierte Leben in den Badeorten und Dörfern. Das Eiland verfügt nicht nur über eine verkehrstechnisch gute Anbindung zu den skandinavischen Staaten, es verbindet auch das saisonale Leben in den Ferienzentren mit der traditionell bodenständigen Kreide-, Land- und Fischwirtschaft. Noch gibt es nicht das geplante monumentale „KdF“ [Kraft durch Freude] Seebad an der Prorer Wiek.
Die Landschaft ist geprägt von steinzeitlichen Hünengräbern, den wirtschaftlich bedeutenden Kreidefelsen sowie der Rügener Fischerei. Klein, aber fein. Vitt, das kleine Fischerdörfchen mit 13 Häusern liegt nahe des Kap Arkona in einer Uferschlucht.
Der Ursprung des Namens ist ungeklärt. Es wird vermutet, dass der Name slawischen Ursprungs ist. Sehr naheliegend, da am Kap ja Slawen auf der Jaromarsburg lebten. Möglich ist auch ein schwedischer Ursprung. „Witt“ beschreibt einen mittelalterlichen Handelsplatz, der Vitt in der Tat war. Ebenso ungeklärt ist, wann das Dorf entstand. Es gibt keine Gründungsurkunde, doch ein dänischer Geschichtsschreiber hielt in seinen Aufzeichnungen fest, dass es im 10. Jahrhundert schon einen Handelshafen gab, der der Jaromarsburg am Kap angehörte. Urkundlich erwähnt wurde Vitt das erste Mal am 25. Mai 1290, als dem Ort das Recht und die Freiheit des Fischfangs eingeräumt wurde. Das kleine Fischerdorf auf der Halbinsel Wittow ist bis heute gut erhalten und erfreut sich über den Besuch vieler Touristen. Im Hafen von Vitt können Sie Bootsfahrten ums Kap machen und die Leuchttürme von Seeseite aus bewundern. Vitt sollten Sie gesehen haben. Das kleine Dörfchen ist auf jeden Fall einen Besuch wert.
