???????? TIFF GOES TO KOREA EP 5 I Jeju, Hallim Park, Osulloc, Innisfree, Cheonjiyeon
On this episode of Tiff in Korea, I fly from Seoul to Jeju, check into our hotel at Robero Hotel Jeju, go to Jeju Dongmun Market to see traditional goods and tons of tangerines! Jeju is famous for their tangerines and oranges called Hallabong. We then go to Hallim Park to see tropical plants, caves and ponds. Then literally cross the street to visit Hyeopjae beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery. It was not long before the wind got super crazy so we headed over to the Osulloc Tea Museum and try some of their well known drinks and snacks and the wedding green tea smell was so heavenly. And right next to Osulloc is the Innisfree Jeju House that sells innisfree products as well as their cafe and we had to frolic through the green tea fields of course! It felt like a dream. And lastly to end the night we go to the Cheonjiyeon waterfalls.
Tips for this episode:
1. We rented a taxi driver to drive us around to these specific places we went to. I highly recommend doing this if you have groups of people. It is cost efficient and you can tell the driver any place you would like to visit in Jeju Island for an 8 hour time limit (every driver is different, so make sure to ask their rate and what their time limit is. Some will just charge extra if you go over time. Some might not - like our sweet driver).
2. Hallim Park and Cheonjiyeon Waterfall had admission fees before entering.
3. To fully experience Hallim Park, it would take about 2-3 hours depending on how fast you are. We didn't think we would take that long but time past by super quickly without us realizing. So just something to consider if you are on a time restraint.
3. Not a lot of people around Jeju spoke english that well, including our taxi driver so just be aware. But still fairly easy to communicate/get around by showing pictures of places through our phones.

South Korea: Thousands of taxi drivers protest against carpooling app
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Tens of thousands of taxi drivers gathered for a mass demonstration against a carpooling app that they say will destroy their livelihoods, in Seoul on Thursday.
The protest follows the suicide of a taxi driver who set himself on fire in protest against the planned introduction of ride-sharing service Kakao Mobility. He left behind two notes explaining the difficulties faced by taxi drivers in South Korea, where drivers say they already face long hours of work for low pay.

Jeju, Listennn | #023
This is my second time in Jeju-do. I went in February with my dad; this time, I went with 6 exchange friends.
5 days, 4 nights.
----
DAY ONE
We arrived in Jeju 5:00p, ate dinner, and found our way to our air bnb by taxi. We originally were trying to rent a car for our trip; however, due to certain circumstances, we were left with finding our way around by bus and taxi.
Thank goodness 3/7 of us were Korean, so they knew figured it out pretty fast.
---
DAY TWO
we ended up staying up late last night singing karaoke, eating, etc. Going off little sleep, we made our way to the ferry terminal to get to Udo Island.
Udo Island is a smaller island off the east coast of Jeju. If anyone is going to Jeju, I'd say Udo is a must. It's a quieter and more rural version of Jeju. Day two easily became my favorite day.
We rented electric bikes for 15,000 won ($12.74)/2 hours. The manager of the rental told us the island would take only 40 minutes to travel around with our electric bikes.
I've never been on an electric bike, but it was the most relaxing form of transportation I've ever been on. You don't have to pedal (unless you wish to), you feel the breeze of the wind, and you get to see the scenery with no window glares. Udo was absolutely beautiful. Less people with beautiful beaches and hills.
We stopped for seafood (14,000 won | $11.89) - this was absolutely delicious. As you'll see, the portion was huge. The only uncomfortable part was when the ajjuma came over with a live octopus and plopped it into the broth. She boiled that octopus alive. I'm pretty sure in the states, that would be classified as animal cruelty. But anywho, this is Asia. Plus, it was delicious.
After returning our bikes, we ended up chilling at the dock for half an hour. We made our way back to our air bnb to rest early. We planned to wake up and go to sunrise peak ...at 4 in the morning.
---
DAY THREE
Our main plan was to go Sunrise Peak (Seongsan Ilchulbong) + see through kayaking. We woke up at 3am, got to Sunrise Peak at 4:15a and began our hike up. We arrived at the top around 5am and camped out until the sun peaked out.
To be quite honest, the sunrise was disappointing. The morning was incredibly cloudy and therefore the sun was not able to shine.
We ended up eating a early breakfast - Jeju's famous abalone porridge. When we arrived at the kayak area, we had to make reservations. We arrived at 10am but the next available spot was 2p.
Having 4 hours to kill, we decided to do something. We saw an ad for fishing in the sea and we decided to try our luck. The fisherman told us he'd take us out, provide bait, the boat ride, gas, cut the fish for us, let us eat the shashimi we caught, etc ...all for $28000 won per person ($23.79).
I ended up catching 1 fish in the 3 hours while all my other friends caught 10+. My friend, Kaylee, got the high score of our group - 13 fish.
Fishing was the highlight of the day - without a doubt. Kayaking was 15000 won for 20 minutes. It was see through though so we figured it was worth the experience.
For dinner, we took our fish to a restaurant and they cooked it for us! We ended our day at Cheonjiyeon Waterfall.
___
DAY FOUR
We woke up and had planned to go to lava tube. However for some reason, everyone was being sluggish and ended up sitting outside just bumming around. One of us proposed to spend the day at the beach first. That got everyone excited.
Especially the Hawaiian of the group - Josh. We picked a beach close to the location of the lava tube - Hamdeok Beach. It was absolutely beautiful. The moment we got there, everyone got super excited. The water was clear, the sand was white, the weather was 82 degrees (F).
We ended up spending 4-5 hours at the beach getting tan and swimming.
We attempted to get to lava tube but I got the wrong time (sorry guys!). I thought it closed at 9p, but it ended up saying it closed at 6p. So we decided to go to Dongmun Market.
We each bought snacks, fruit, etc and decided to play Mafia/Werewolf at Sulbing (bingsu cafe).
For some reason that day, we could not stop playing Mafia and Werewolf any chance we got. Our last night we spent at a jimjilbang.
___
DAY FIVE
We woke up at 6:00a and caught our plane at 8am. We landed around 9:30a.
I ended up booking it back to SNU as fast as I could to make it to my marketing class at 11. I made it!
Can't believe I edited it so fast! I got back today and uploaded today.. guess I was really excited to make this episode.

Hiking the HIGHEST MOUNTAIN in South Korea
Today we're hiking up Hallasan, South Korea's highest mountain! Hallasan is a shield volcano and is surrounded by a national park. As recommended by our taxi driver, we take the Yeongsil Course up and Eorimok Course back down. For those wanting to reach the peak, arrive before 8am so you have time to get back down before sunset (also advised by the taxi driver). Just sharing tips from a local :)

Taxi fares in Seoul to go up on Saturday
인상된 서울 택시 요금에 상반된 반응
Taxi fares in Seoul have been hiked starting today... for the first time in five years.
As you might expect,... it has triggered different reactions from both passengers and drivers alike.
Lee Min-sun reports. The new fares took effect on Saturday at 4 AM.
The base fare went up almost 27 percent to 3-thousand-800 won, or about 3 U.S. dollars and forty cents.
It's the first increase since October 2013.
People in Korea have gotten used to taxis being relatively cheap over the years, so even though drivers have promised better service, some people are unhappy about the higher fares.
As a student, this is a huge increase. It would be goof if they improved their service, but there's no one else in the car with us, so it's hard to make sure that happens.
It’s about time that taxi fares go up, but it seems rather sudden. I'll take public transportation more. They've always talked about improving their service, but it's never really happened.
It might seem logical to expect better service if you're paying more, but drivers say even with the increase... the fares aren't very high.
It’s still nothing compared to other countries. If passengers want better service, then they should pay more. Regular taxi drivers will do just as they've always done and keep refusing passengers.
When taxi fares go up, we lose passengers for a while. But I will always try to provide better service, not just because the fare has risen.
The Seoul Private Taxi Association has promised better service in exchange for the higher pay, like keeping their cars cleaner, drivers not smoking in the car and putting more taxis on the streets at night. But many people aren't convinced they will.
The city government says it will check up on their service and has already taken various measures.
Recently it penalized 22 taxi companies caught refusing passengers.
It also plans to introduce taxis that are for women only.
Meanwhile the province of Gyeonggi-do, which surrounds the capital, is also looking at increasing its base fare for the first time in five years.

Seoul Haul ➸ Clothing, Cosmetics, and Color Lens
♡♡♡ ---------- ᴏᴘᴇɴ ᴍᴇ! ---------- ♡♡♡
This video rendered weirdly so a lot of sections look like they’re freezing up. ???? (Or was it only lagging on my QuickTime??)
There was over an hour of total footage so my FCP couldn’t handle it again. I can’t wait to going back to editing shorter videos haha… ^^
Since so many of you are curious about how much money I spend on trips, I actually wrote down the prices of everything I bought, so please see the list below. I hesitated on whether or not to include it but I thought it’d be helpful for some of you. Please refrain from leaving comments like “you’re so rich” etc. below though because I don’t really enjoy reading them… ; ~ ;
For transportation in Seoul, I always took the subway when I was alone since it’s really cheap, but when I was with Chinese fans we always rode taxis and one of them always ended up paying. Most of my meals were paid for by one of my friends as well (you can refer to my vlog) so I didn’t spend much money on that. I did buy breakfast for myself at local convenience stores (which are the best!) — a pint of milk + two rice balls only cost 3.200 won, or roughly $2.78!!
I know you guys are waiting for my money-saving video, but I have a few others filmed that I’d like to edit + upload first. My hard drive is starting to get crowded with too many clips! After I clean up the current ones, I promise to work on the ones I’ve been owing you all — the $$$ video, the room tour, and maybe even one on Seoul travel tips?
