The supposed tomb of Saint Nicholas a fine slab effigy in low relief of an early 14th-century ecclesiastic popularly associated with Saint Nicholas of Myra in County Kilkenny, Ireland. While more probably a local priest from Jerpoint Abbey, it lies in the medieval lost town of Newtown Jerpoint, just west of the Cistercian Jerpoint Abbey.
It is located 2.0 miles (3.2 km) southwest of Thomastown, just off the N9 national primary road in the grounds of the privately owned Jerpoint Park. St. Nicholas's Church and graveyard are in the town, where the earthly remains of St. Nicholas of Myra are said to be buried. Belmore House stands at the top of the town.
The memorial has been moved since 1839, and it has sustained damage from the fall of a tree. A conservation plan was developed by the Heritage Council in 2007. In advance of conservation work in 2013, St Nicholas church and the tomb of St Nicholas were surveyed and modelled in 3D

The lost town of Newtown Jerpoint
Founded in the 12th century, Newtown Jerpoint was a thriving village. A destination for pilgrims visiting Jerpoint Abbey, the town boasted a woolen mill, a court house, a tannery, a brewery and, according to legend, had 14 taverns and 27 dwelling houses. It's not necessary to go far from Croan Cottages to experience a sample of all Ireland has to offer. Jerpoint Abbey is just outside Thomastown and is one of the best examples of a Cistercian ruin to be found in all Ireland. Founded in 1158 -1180 with additions to the site in the 14th and 15th centuries, the Abbey sits on the River Arrigle and is steeped in history. On to Thomastown, or Baile Mhic Andain in Irish, which is the second largest town in Kilkenny County and a wonderful place to shop for your groceries and supplies for the cottage, to stop in for a pint or to dine out. Across the bridge stop in at the Coach House for a tasty lunch or dinner and give them my regards. Thomastown sits on the River Nore and you can't miss the ruin of the 13th Century Gothic Church as you come into the town. Tullaherin Monastic Site is also close by and the roundtower dates from the early 9th century. There is not much doubt that this site was dedicated to Saint Kieran but there is some argument as to whether he is buried there or not. It seems possible as one source of the name is purported to be Tulach Chiarain in Irish meaning, The Mound of St. Kieran. Mount Juliet is also worth a visit with 15oo acres of gardens and woodland it is an old estate made into a lovely hotel with many amenities including a lovely golf course. Jerpoint Abbey is a ruined Cistercian abbey, founded in the second half of the 12th century, near Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is located 2.5 km south west from Thomastown on the R448 regional road. There is a Visitor Centre with an exhibition. It has been declared a national monument and has been in the care of the Office of Public Works since 1880.
It was constructed by in 1180, by Donchadh Ó Donnchadha Mac Giolla Phátraic, the King of Osraige. It was dedicated to the Blessed Virgin. Jerpoint is notable for its stone carvings, including one at the tomb of Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory. The abbey flourished until the Dissolution of the Monasteries by the English king Henry VIII.
Jerpoint Abbey gives its name to the civil parish of Jerpoint Abbey or Abbey-Jerpoint in the barony of Knocktopher. It lies near the anciently corporate town of Newtown Jerpoint. The present ruins are very extensive and display some specimens of the later Norman passing into the early English style of architecture. Jerpoint is notable for its stone carvings, including one at the tomb of Felix O'Dulany, Bishop of the Diocese of Ossory.
There is a well-proportioned, square, embattled tower. The church with its Romanesque details dates from the 12th century. In the transept chapels are 13th to 16th century tomb sculptures. The tower and cloister date from the 15th century. In the Abbey is the sculptured cloister arcade with unique carvings.

Jerpoint Abbey is a short drive from Kilkenny Ireland. If you go, you will find the ruins of a Cistercian abbey that was founded in the late 12th century. Before entering you will go through the Visitor Center that we found hosted by a wonderful and knowledgeable woman that not only knew about the Jerpoint Abbey, but also several other sites nearby.
Jerpoint is well known for its stone carvings, square and embattled tower. Jerpoint is a national monument and has been run by the Office of Public works since 1880.
When we visited it was raining slightly, but we literally had the entire place to ourselves. Please visit and pass the word, this is not to be missed if you are near Kilkenny Ireland.
