Berlin Dom Worth Seeing || Berliner Dom Sehenwerts ! Teil 1 (Berlin Cathedral)
Berlin Dom Worth Seeing , Berliner Dom Sehenwerts. Teil 1 ( Berlin Cathedral). #lifestyleberlinlagos . The Dom is the parish church of the congregation Gemeinde der Oberpfarr- und Domkirche zu Berlin, a member of the umbrella organisation Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia. The term Dom denotes a collegiate church (equivalent to the Italian duomo, or the English Minster); however, as most cathedrals are also collegiate churches, the term Dom has become the common term for a cathedral in German, though they are not synonymous. Berlin Cathedral has never been a cathedral in the actual sense of that term since it has never been the seat of a bishop. The bishop of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg (under this name 1945–2003) is based at St. Mary's Church and Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in Berlin.#lifestyleberlinlagos

The history of today's Supreme Parish and Collegiate Church and its community dates back to 1451. In that year Prince-Elector Frederick II Irontooth of Brandenburg moved with his residence from Brandenburg upon Havel to Cölln (today's Fishers' Island, the southern part of Museums Island) into the newly erected City Palace, which also housed a Catholic chapel. In 1454 Frederick Irontooth, after having returned – via Rome – from his pilgrimage to Jerusalem, elevated the chapel to become a parish church, richly endowing it with relics and altars.[1] Pope Nicholas V ordered Stephan Bodecker, then Prince-Bishop of Brandenburg, to consecrate the chapel to Erasmus of Formiae.[2] Berlin Major

The Neue Kirche , is located in Berlin on the Gendarmenmarkt across from French Church of Friedrichstadt .Its parish comprised the northern part of the then new quarter of Friedrichstadt, which until then belonged to the parish of the congregations of Jerusalem's Church. The Lutheran and Calvinist congregants used German as their native language, as opposed to the French-speaking Calvinist congregation owning the French Church of Friedrichstadt on the opposite side of Gendarmenmarkt. The congregants' native language combined with the domed tower earned the church its colloquial naming Deutscher Dom.

Medieval Churches of Flaeming - Brandenburg State, Germany
In the Flaeming area of Brandenburg State, southwest of Berlin, is a concentration of stone village churches that date back to the 1100s to 1300s. Mostly built in the Romanesque style, many of these chuches have undergone extensive renovations over the centuries but retain their medieval character.
The area was occupied by the pagan Wends when the Holy Roman Empire launched the Wendish Crusade in the mid-12th century. This was an attempt to drive out the Wends and replace them with Christian Flemish and Saxon settlers. The construction of these churches was one consequence of the Christianization of the region.
You can visit a handful of these churches on a day trip out of Berlin, although most are only open during Sunday services.
The Photos (in order)
E13A0978 - Reetz bei Belzig; the parish church dates back to the second half of the 12th century, although its tower was added later; one of its three bells is from the 13th century; it was heavily damaged during the Thirty Years War and underwent extensive reconstruction in the 1650s; some of my ancestors likely worshipped here; their births, marriages and deaths have been recorded in parish records
E13A1060 - Fredersdorf; the parish church was built in the mid-1200s, although the nave was extended in the 1700s; its tower is newer, replacing an earlier tower that fell into disrepair; its altarpiece is about 400 years old
E13A0921 - Luesse; the parish church dates back to the early 1200s and is built in the late Romanesque style; the tower was reconstructed in the 1800s after an earlier tower was destroyed by a lightning strike
E13A1051 - Reppenichen; it is believed that this Gothic style church was originally built before 1450 and likely in the 1300s; the village had been depopulated for an extended period, and the church underwent extensive renovation when the population returned in the late 1500s; it was damaged in the Thirty Years War, so further changes were made during its restoration
E13A1233 - Grubo; this Romanesque-style stone parish church dates back to the mid-1300s; it underwent some restoration work in the 1900s
E13A1065 - Goerzke; this late Romanesqe style church may date back to the late 1100s, but like many of the other churches listed here it underwent a number of renovations over the next 800 years; the west tower was probably originally added in the 1400s
E13A1226 - Jeserig/Flaeming; this church may date to the 12th century; distinctive from the other churches shown here, this church does not have a tower, although it had a small roof tower at some point; a wooden tower was added in the early 1800s but no longer exists
E13A1120 - Schlamau; this stone church was likely built in the late 1100s; the bell dates from 1469
Aachen Cathedral, Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, Europe
Aachen Cathedral, frequently referred to as the Imperial Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church in Aachen, Germany. The church is the oldest cathedral in northern Europe and was known as the Royal Church of St. Mary at Aachen during the Middle Ages. For 595 years, from 936 to 1531, the Aachen chapel was the church of coronation for 30 German kings and 12 queens. The church is the episcopal seat of the Diocese of Aachen. Charles the Great (Charlemagne) began the construction of the Palatine Chapel around 796, along with the building of the rest of the palace structures. The construction is credited to Odo of Metz. It suffered a large amount of damage around 881, by the Northmen and was restored in 983. In the 14th and 15th centuries, Gothic additions were added, including the choir in 1355. It was restored again in 1881. The core of the cathedral is the Carolingian Palatine Chapel, which is notably small in comparison to the later additions. In order to sustain the enormous flow of pilgrims in the Gothic period a choir hall was built: a two-part Capella vitrea (glass chapel) which was consecrated on the 600th anniversary of Charlemagne's death. A cupola, several other chapels and a steeple were also constructed at later dates. In 1978, it was one of the first 12 items to make the entry into the UNESCO list of world heritage sites, as the first German and one of the first three European historical ensembles. The cathedral uses two distinct architectural styles. First, the Palatine Chapel of Charlemagne, modeled after San Vitale at Ravenna and considered to be Carolingian-Romanesque. Secondly, the choir in the Gothic style. In the western gallery on the lower floor, opposite the choir, the Throne of Charlemagne is to be found, which has been the object of new investigations in the past decades. The original Carolingian throne came from the spolia of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. The appearance of the throne and its location in the Palatine Chapel did not change with the passage of centuries. Between 936 and 1531, thirty one German kings ascended to this throne after their anointment and coronation at the Altar of Mary. The Westwork (western facade) of the cathedral is of Carolingian origin, flanked by two stair-towers. It is a two-story building, completed by a porch from the 18th century at the west end.
The bronze leaves attached to this porch, the Wolfstür (Wolf's Door) weigh 43 hundredweight altogether (cf. with this the Lousberg saga). The main entrance to the Cathedral, the door was cast in Aachen around 800 and was located between the westwork and the octogon in the so-called hexadecagon up to 1788. The portal was restored in 1924. Each leaf is divided into eight rectangles - a number which had religious symbolism in Christianity, as a symbol of Sunday, the day of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and also of perfection (as did twelve, also) and can be found in the measurements of the Palatine Chapel over and over again. These boxes were framed by decorative strips, which are made of egg-shaped decorations. The egg was considered a symbol of life and fertility from antiquity. In Christian belief it was embued with the even wider symbolism of Eternal Life. The door-rings in the shape of lions' heads are wreathed by 24 (i.e. two time twelve or three times eight) acanthus scrolls again to be understood at the deepest level through numerology. The Wolfstür's imitation of the shape of the ancient Roman temple door signifies Charlemagne's claim, to have established a New Rome in Aachen with the Palatine Chapel as the distinctive monumental building. In the forehall, there is a bronze sculpture of a bear, which was probably made in the tenth century, i.e. in Ottonian times. Opposite it is a bronze pine cone with 129 perforated scales, which stands 91 cm high (including its base); its date is controversial and ranges from the 3rd to the tenth century. Its base is clearly Ottonian and includes an inscription written in Leonine hexameter, which refers to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers of Mesopotamia. According to one view, the pine cone would originally have served as a waterspout on a fountain and would been placed in the atrium of the Palatine chapel in Carolingian times. The upper level is characterised by an exceptionally fine brick western wall. Inside, it bulges outward, while the outside bulges inwards, so that the Carolingian west wall can be seen as a convex- concave bulge.

STORYLINE:
Pope Benedict XVI assured his followers in the Holy Land that peace was possible as he ended his Middle East visit on Friday, putting aside contentious issues he has confronted over the past week and coming as a pilgrim to the site of Jesus' crucifixion.
A traditional escort of men in black robes and red fezzes accompanied the pontiff as he solemnly walked into the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, rhythmically banging staffs on the ground to announce his approach.
Thousands of soldiers and policemen were deployed on Friday around Jerusalem's Old City for the pope's visit to the ancient church, which tradition holds marks the site of Jesus' crucifixion, burial and resurrection.
Benedict knelt down and kissed the rectangular stone on which Jesus' body is believed to have been placed after the crucifixion.
Then he entered the structure inside the church marking the site of Jesus' tomb and knelt inside alone for several minutes, hands clasped, as priests chanted nearby.
In a speech afterward, he told those gathered in the church not to lose hope.
The Gospel reassures us that God can make all things new, that history need not be repeated, that memories can be healed, that the bitter fruits of recrimination and hostility can be overcome, he said.
Benedict also met with the city's Greek Orthodox and Armenian Orthodox patriarchs, part of the outreach effort toward Orthodox Christians that he has made a keystone of his papacy.
The pope is leaving the Holy Land having fulfilled his mission of reaching out to Jews and Muslims, but some are giving his five-day trip only mixed reviews.
Making his first visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories as pontiff, the pope has addressed the Holocaust, Israeli-Palestinian politics and the shrinking number of Christians in the region.
During his visit, he led 50-thousand worshippers in a jubilant Mass outside of Nazareth, in an effort to rally his dwindling flock.
He removed his shoes to enter Islam's third-holiest shrine, and followed Jewish custom by placing a note bearing a prayer for peace in the cracks of the Western Wall.

•●The Official Video Site of Concert Organist Xaver Varnus●•
Born in Budapest, his first piano teacher was Emma Németh, one of the last pupils of Claude Debussy. Xaver Varnus has played virtually every important organ in the world, including those in Bach's Thomaskirche in Leipzig (2014), Berliner Dom (2013), Notre-Dame (1981), Saint-Sulpice (2006) and Saint-Eustache (1996) in Paris, National Shrine in Washington, D.C. (1985), and Canterbury Cathedral (2004), as well as the largest existing instrument in the world, the Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia (1985). His Quadruple Platinum Disc winning album From Ravel to Vangelis, released by Sony BMG in 2007, is the best-selling organ CD ever. As a Canadian citizen, Xaver Varnus resides in Berlin, Germany. Put simply, Varnus is a monster talent, every bit as stimulating and individual as the late Glenn Gould (The Globe & Mail, Canada's National Newspaper).

Jerusalem hostel built by Russian royals reopens
(18 Jul 2017) A hostel built by Russian royals in imperial times to house pilgrims to Jerusalem reopened as a luxury hotel on Tuesday, after being closed for more than 100 years.
The Sergei Courtyard compound was inaugurated in the presence of Russian dignitaries and comes as Russia seeks to reassert itself in the region.
Bought by Imperial Russia at the end of the 19th century from the Ottomans, the hostel was closed after the territory fell under the British Mandate and Tzarist Russia succumbed under the October Revolution in 1917.
The renaissance style imperial tower was then used as office space.
In 2008, Israel returned the building to the Russian government, which set aside a fund of some 10 million US dollars to restore it.
With gardens and an outstanding corner tower, the building will have 22 rooms with modern amenities styled to evoke the days when Russia was ruled by the Romanovs.
