Jin Li Ancient Street - Food, Shopping, and Fun | This is Chengdu, China
When we arrived at the gate of Jin Li Pedestrian Street, we were scared. It was packed with people. We made the mistake of going during the Chinese holiday, Mid-Autumn Festival. Luckily, we didn't chicken out. The street is made-up to look like an ancient Chengdu commercial street, which is exactly what it was 1800 years ago. We checked out the many souvenirs (lots of Panda stuff!), browsed the amazing food, and soaked in all the incredible sights. There's a ton to see on Jin Li Street. Make sure to bring your camera and an appetite.

A major tourist attraction and travel spot in Chengdu, the capital of China's Sichuan Province, is the Jinli Ancient Street. There's food, art, panda shops, and more! It's an interesting place to visit, if you're ever there.

Jinli Old Street is one of the oldest shopping streets in Sichuan Province, and it can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms Period, over 1,800 years ago. The street showcases the customs of Xishu and the culture of Shuhan (one of the Three Kingdoms from 221 to 263). Most of the architecture here is of the style of the residences in western Sichuan Province.

While visiting family in Chengdu China, we thought we'd check out the Jinli pedestrian street. There are lots of shops and alleys to explore and lots of fun foods to try! We arrived around 7:00am before the shops opened so it felt like we had the place almost completely to ourselves.

Exploring the Jinli area in Chengdu, China
Follow us as we explore an area in Chengdu called Jinli which is famous for its old town pedestrian street with lots of retail and F&B outlets, as well as a museum commemorating the heroes during the era of the three Kingdoms.

Wide and Narrow Alleys - Chinese Street Food | This is Chengdu, China
Locally known as Kuan-Zhai Xiangzhi (“kuan” = wide, “zhai” = narrow, “xiangzi” = alley), the Wide-Narrow Alleys of Chengdu are very much a tourist attraction in the city. The two pedestrian streets are packed with food and shopping. The buildings are chic versions of ancient China. At night, the alleys light up and tourists jump from vendor to vendor eating traditional street food and buying up an assortment of souvenirs.
The wide and narrow alleys are cool, but they don't really feel like traditional China. We go a few blocks north in the same neighborhood to get a sense of what the area feels like without all the bells and whistles... or in Chinese: gongs and selfie-sticks. We also grab a couple bowls of amazing food.

The street is about 550 meters long. It is a part of the Temple of Marquis, and the buildings are in the Qing Dynasty style.

The street is about 550 meters long. It is a part of the Temple of Marquis, and the buildings are in the Qing Dynasty style. The theme is Three Kingdoms Culture, a traditional folk custom. There are many bars, inns, snack stores and souvenir shops. The street was renovated in 2004. In 2005, Jinli was named as “National Top Ten City Commercial Pedestrian Street”. In 2006, Jinli was named as “National Demonstration Base Of The Cultural Industry” by the Ministry of Culture. There are approximately 18,000,000 visitors a year. Especially in Spring Festival when more people come to visit Big Temple Fair.

Over a kilometer of shopping of all kinds can be found on Chunxi Road. It's Chengdu's largest pedestrian shopping street, and it's filled with both high-end shops and bargain boutiques. Whether you are looking for pandas, silk, or some other Chengdu souvenirs; Chunxi Road is the best place to shop in Chengdu.
We do a bit of Christmas shopping, stopping to snack on meats and other street foods.
