Five Fun Napa Valley Wineries to Visit
Looking for something a little different in a Napa Valley getaway? Here are five fun wineries we like to visit when we travel to the Napa Valley.
Tres Sabores Winery is well off the beaten path at the base of the Mayacamus Mountains in St. Helena. Julie Johnson is the owner & winemaker and she produces fine Cabernet and Zinfandel from her certified organic vineyards. The winery is rustic with no formal tasting room, just a homey welcoming atmosphere.
Up the road is Corison Winery. Many call Cathy Corison the queen of Napa Valley Cabernet. She has been at it for many years and her Cabernets reflect the old school Cabs of the Napa Valley. These are restrained Cabernets loved by many. The beautiful barn style Corison winery is setback from Highway 29 in St. Helena
At the Smith Madrone winery, The two Smith Brothers are a throwback to a different era of the Napa Valley. There is no fancy state-of-the-art wine making equipment or a lavish tasting room. All the tasting is done in the cellar room and chances are Stu or Charlie will be doing the pouring as they did when they started the winery on Spring mountain in 1971.
Buehler Vineyards is across the Valley from Smith Madrone and about 4 miles east of the Silverado Trail at the base of Howell Mountain. Buehler began in 1976 so along with Smith-Madrone one of the older wineries in the Napa Valley. John Buehler runs the show here and his son Page Buelher tends to the tasting room and visitors. Two Cabernets and a Zinfandel have brought notoriety to this hidden gem.
Casa Nuestra is on the Silverado Trail, near Calistoga. The tasting room is a kick, mostly cluttered with memorabilia. Years ago Elvis Presley shot a scene for one of his movies in the Casa Nuestra vineyards so there is good collection of Elvis items in the tasting room. You will like the funky atmosphere
You can use our handy trip planner to find these wineries on the map and print your directions and itinerary. Happy travels.

American History (After Hours): The Judgement of Paris and American Wine
On May 16, 2016, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris with a special American History (After Hours) program at the museum with wine tastings, food, and dynamic conversation. The Judgment of Paris was a pivotal moment forty years ago when American winemakers surprised a panel of French wine experts (and the world) by placing first in a blind tasting that pitted the new American wines against the best of France.
Watch the panel discussion from this evening about the legacy of the Judgment of Paris and American wine history featuring experts and some of the original participants:
Steven Spurrier – The organizer of the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
George Taber – The only journalist to cover the tasting and author of Judgment of Paris (New York: Scribner, 2005).
Warren Winiarski – The winemaker of the winning 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon and founder of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars
Bo Barrett – The CEO and former winemaker at Chateau Montelena Winery and son of the late Jim Barrett who owned Chateau Montelena at the time of the Judgment of Paris.
Violet Grgich – The daughter of Mike Grgich, the winemaker of the winning 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay and founder of the winery, Grgich Hills Estate, where Violet is co-proprietor.
Ted Baseler – The CEO of Ste. Michelle Estates and CEO of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.
Moderated by Paula Johnson, Curator, National Museum of American History.

Hamel Family Wines
For the Hamels, the goal was simple: create a family business built for the long term. Through a blend of passion, respect for the land and a commitment to quality winemaking, each family member is involved and contributes meaningfully. Guests who visit Hamel Family Wines experience a celebration of the senses, from the estate house design and sweeping vineyard views to the warm hospitality and artisan wines. It’s not unlike First Republic’s thoughtful approach to banking, which attracts clients who value a high level of service and attention to detail. This shared ethos is the foundation of a long-standing client relationship.

For more formal gatherings, there is a gourmet kitchen and butler’s pantry adjacent to the beautiful dining room with extraordinary views and a fire place built with stone native to the ranch. The master wing features “his and her” bathrooms and closets. The finished basement features a temperature-controlled wine cellar and dinner seating. In summary, the home was constructed and finished in the highest quality and has been maintained in top condition.
Down the paved driveway and to the east of the main home, there are three additional homes, two of which are near found the state-of-the-art Equestrian facility to support a state-of-the-art training facility. The main barn features an office, large tack room, wash racks and vet room. Beyond the barn is a covered round pen and a large covered arena with lights, sprinklers and cattle catch pens. RV hook ups, an outdoor arena, a large guest barn, a tractor/trailer barn and a race track are some of the features of the facility. Any rancher would appreciate the organization and carefully thought out rotational grazing pastures that have been fenced and cross-fenced throughout the ranch.
Additional outdoor activities include the tennis court, 9-hole executive golf course tucked neatly inside the race track, fishing/boating pond and target shooting range found just beyond the private runway where you can land your small airplane or helicopter. This ranch is simply magical!

Louis Martini Winery By Locate A Winery
Louis M. Martini Winery The Gnarly Vine Locate A Winery
This video will give you a good idea of what you can expect to see if you visit the Louis Martini Winery next time you are in the Napa area.
Locate A Winery was in Napa over the July 4th Week and stopped by Louis Martini Winery to learn more about the Gnarly Vine. The Louis Martini Winery is famous for their wines and you could say have become one of the most popular wines around the world with wine lovers. Louis Martini Winery has a 100-year old vines from Monta Rosa dubbed the Gnarly Vine in the cellar. They call it gnarly because of the way it grows. Other vines grow up straight, on a latch structure, but the Martini family allows their vine to grow naturally, even though it takes up a lot more space, they do not control how it grows.
You must visit Louis Martini Winery and taste their magnificent wines; it will be an awesome memory.
