Harrison's Dream - Missouri State U Wind Ensemble
The Missouri State University Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Belva Prather, performs Harrison's Dream by Peter Graham. Presented at Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts, Missouri State University, Springfield, Missouri, USA, on November 10, 2012.
Harrison's Dream is a musical depiction of the forty-year effort by John Harrison during the first half of the 18th century to develop a chronometer capable of providing exact time on the high seas and thus the accurate measuring of longitude. His obsession was a result of the passing of the Longitude Act following the accidental destruction of the Association, flagship of the British Royal Navy, along with three sister ships, in 1707 on rocks off the Scilly Islands.
The followoing is a description of the piece from the 2004 All England Masters Championships:
It opens in fantastic fashion - marked Allegro quaver = 168. The percussion set the tempo (many have set off as if the clock had been manically overwound) and many a band have come a cropper by trying to play this section too fast. YBS will not want to be reminded of London 2000, when the judges tore them apart before their ship had left dock. There will also be many a second and third cornet player cursing the composer after trying to untangle their third fingers from around the valves.
After that the mechanical approach continues apace with the consistent beat of the clock ticking away in the background and an Eb bass part that only the best will master. And if you thought the tempo at the beginning was high, come the Ritmico at letter E it flicks up a couple of gears and moves into electric territory at quaver = 192. Ritmico and bleeding hard. Around letter H the cornets have a devilish part before we move into a grotesque waltz feature (all druken sailors) which features a nautical bit of euph playing. There is then a lovely section of playing that is marked Largo which features a plaintive cornet sol before we move into a section of calmness as if the sea itself is clear and the wind is settled.
The cornets though have a tough time of it (up amongst the crows nest in range) with their part soaring up to top C and D - all with a sense of serenity. It is mightily difficult, but when it comes off it is quite beautiful. The tenderness continues before we come to the most surreal moment of the work when the echoes of the lost souls of previous ships are marked with ghostly small bells. This is a section that is sometimes overlooked as just effect, but when it is played with intelligence and understanding it is as moving as you like and sends a shiver down the spine. You can almost feel the ships slipping below the waves, their bells ringing out for a last desperate time before the vessel and it's sailors sink to the leviathan depths.
Then comes triumph as Harrison sets to work once more and finally cracks the problem - the tempo is once more frantic, as if he despairs that he will never find the secret of Longitude before the final build of intensity to the climax of his historic achievemnt. The calmness returns and for once Harrison after such a long and tortuous self journey finds peace (and a few bob in his pocket). The music finally ends with a huge chord of declaration. Harrison has achieved his dream.

Adam Lambert - Springfield, MO 8/7/10 - Tommy Joe Ratliff Signing After Concert!
Longineu, Tommy, Monte and Adam came out, in that order, after the concert to meet fans. They were all so nice!! Tommy still had his full make-up on. It was fun to see it up close. I told Tommy my thoughts and prayers were with him and he said thank you. Wasn't sure if I should even say anything about it, i.e., bring it up, but it seemed like he appreciated the comment, so I'm glad I did.

Adam Lambert - Springfield, MO 8/7/10 - Monte Pittman Signing After Concert
Finally got this uploaded! Longineu, Tommy, Monte and ADAM came out after the concert! This short vid is actually 3 short snips that I put together. Monte came out after Tommy, but he actually passed up Tommy going down the line. Guess when you have twins + 2, u learn to work fast. When he got to me, I asked if I could take a pic of just him. He was so nice and stood in front of the camera in a waving pose. Perfect! Didn't expect that. HOWEVER. The memory card turned out to be full, so the pic was a FAIL! So disappointed - it would've been a great one. Oh well, maybe I'll get a chance at the next concert! The reason the memory card was full? Let's just say that some 3-yr-olds like to stealth-snap a LOT of pics of basically the same thing, lol!

Extreme Passion
Get ready for the ultimate night of passionate music! We start with the dramatic and romantic Polovtsian Dances from Borodin’s Prince Igor, which has inspired countless uses in popular culture—you’ll recognize Stranger in Paradise from the musical Kismet and alluring and exotic melodies you’ve heard in movies, television shows, and even video games. Then we turn to the most passionate love story of all time with Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet. We explore the extremes of orchestral instruments with Vaughan Williams’ Tuba Concerto performed by Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s principal tubist Gene Pokorny. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to hear one of the greatest brass players in the world. And we close with Ravel’s Bolero, one of the most fiery, seductive, and ecstatic works in the orchestral repertoire.

LYRICS:
And so I've arrived
With gloat in my eyes
Are you paying attention?
I was searching for something as I watched you run
I was sad when you said that you never really wanted some
Were you looking for someone as I watched you go?
Are you mad because I don't know what you used me for?
I've been looking for so long in America
Throw my hands in the air
Flash, fade in
Say you care, but you don't
You know I hate it
It's a rich kid game and it'll blow up with a throw
That's all that it really is
I was searching for something as I watched you go
I was sad when you said that you never really wanted some
Were you looking for someone as I watched you go?
Are you mad because I don't know what you used me for?
Always talking about one day in America
Same old story, you are poisoned
I've been looking for so long
But you cut me out
Throw my hand to the air cause I...
Look at us
Old friends we were
So generous
But that rich kid pain what it is to be alone
It's only really used
I was searching for something as I watched you run
I was sad when you said that you never really wanted some
Were you looking for someone as I watched you go?
Are you mad because I don't know what you used me for?
Always talking about one day in America
Same old story, you are poisoned
In America, in America
In America, in America
In America, in America
