From Ubon Ratchathani to Khong Chiam - Thailand 4K Travel Channel
The journey takes us along the Mun Rivers from Ubon Ratchathani direction the east to Khong Chiam. The distance is slightly more than 100 km and is the driving time for almost 2 hours. On the way, we pass an OTOP in Sai Mun. OTOP are shops that sell products, on which one has specialized in the region. The OTOP of the village Sai Mun are the traditional drums. The so-called tambols are mainly for the use in temples. They are available in all shapes and sizes.
Khon Chiam is a small place at the confluence of the Mekong and the Mun River. It is the starting point for two different national parks. The Kaeng Tana includes the confluence of the Mun River and the Mekong River.
The Pha Taem National Park is about 20 km further north. Here you should visit the Pha Taem cliff with its 4000 years old rock drawings.
A highlight in Khon Chiam is the beautiful white temple Wat Tham Khuha Sawan. The temple was built in the Ayutthaya period and belongs to the first Royal Temple. From the temple, we will watch the training for the next dragon boat race.

Die Fahrt führt uns entlang des Mun Rivers von Ubon Ratchathani Richtung Osten nach Khong Chiam. Die Entfernung beträgt etwas mehr als 100 km und die Fahrtzeit ist knapp 2 Stunden.
Auf dem Weg passieren wir in Sai Mun ein OTOP. OTOP sind Geschäfte in denen Produkte verkauft werden, auf die man sich in der Region spezialisiert hat. Im Dorf Sai Mun sind es traditionelle Trommeln. Die sogenannten Tambols werden speziell in Tempel verwendet. Hier gibt es sie in sämtlichen Formen und Größen.
Khon Chiam ist ein kleiner Ort am Zusammenfluss des Mekong und des Mun Rivers. Er ist Ausgangspunkt zu zwei unterschiedlichen Nationalparks. Der Kaeng Tana umfasst den Zusammenfluss des Mun Flusses und des Mekong.
Der Pha Taem Nationalpark liegt ca. 20 km weiter nördlich. Hier sollten sie die Pha Taem Klippen mit ihren 4000 Jahre alten Felszeichnungen besuchen.
In Khon Chiam gibt es einen sehenswerten weißen Tempel, Wat Tham Khuha Sawan. Der Tempel wurde in der Ayutthaya-Periode gebaut und gehört zum ersten Königlichen Tempeln. Vom Tempel aus beobachten wir das Training für die nächsten Drachenbootrennen.

Ein nettes kleines Städtchen im äußerstem Nordosten ( Isaan ). Guter Ausgangspunkt für einige Trips in die Umgebung. ( z.b. Pha Taem National Park, Kaeng Tana oder der Sirindhorn-Stausee ) Noch ist es nicht überlaufen!!!

Auf unserer Tour nach Ubon Ratchathani mußten wir auch irgendwo übernachten. Wir haben dann ganz spontan dieses Resort ausgewählt. Letztendlich war es eine gute Wahl. Zimmer gut und Frühstück auch. Wenn man auch mit einfachen Hotels klar kommt, dann ist das Hotel eine gute Wahl. Direkt am Fluß gelegen, kann man beim Frühstück einen wunderbarem Ausblick genießen.
Das Resort erschien auf dem ersten Blick klein zu sein. Doch es entpuppte sich zu einem größeren Resort.
Saubere Anlage. Es lag nirgendwo Abfall jeglicher Art. Ich selbst beobachtete, wie eine Palme ein größeres Blatt auf dem Parkplatz abwarf. Keine 10 min später wurde es von einem Angestellten entfernt.
Der Preis war mit 1200 THB gut.

Wenn man von Khong Chiam zum Sirindhorn - Stausee fährt ( Str. 2173 ) geht es nach ein paar Km recht zum Pak-Mun Dam ab. In der Nähe ist auch der Kaeng Tana Park.

The area of the district was the central district Khwaeng of Mueang Khong Chiam, which is now Si Mueang Mai district. On January 1 1957 the three tambon Khong Chiam, Huai Yang and Pho Klang were split off from Khong Chiam to form the Ban Dan minor district (King Amphoe). On December 11 1959 it was elevated to a full district.
On September 14 1971 the district was renamed to Khong Chiam, while the former district Khong Chiam was renamed to Si Mueang Mai, as the historical center of Mueang Khong Chiam was located within this district.

Located in Isaan region of Thailand, Ubon Ratchthani. The riverside village of KHONG CHIAM (pronounced Kong Jiem) is a popular destination for day-tripping Thais, who drive here from across Isaan to see Two-colored river for which the village is nationally renowned. If you have your own transport, Khong Chiam combines well with visits to Chong Mek (just 27km away) and Kaeng Tana National Park.
Behind the sala, Wat Khong Chiam is a typically charming rural Thai temple and has an old wooden bell tower in its compound. Khong Chiam’s other temple, the cliffside Wat Tham Khu Ha Sawan, located near the point where Route 2222 turns into Khong Chiam, is a striking white color, with natural wood sculptures festooned with orchids in its grounds, and a huge Buddha image staring down on the villagers below.
A must to visit a small coffee shop/café named Once Upon A Time. The food was very good with talent locales playing music. You can also see individuals making many different handcrafts from cloth to jewelry.

Pha Taem National Park (Thai:อุทยานแห่งชาติผาแต้ม) is a national park in Ubon Ratchathani Province of Isan, Thailand.[1] It is notable for its Dipterocarp forest cover and for extensive rock art on cliffs above the Mekong River. Please note that the Mekhong eventually flows into Cambodia some 170 Km's later and not 50 as I said. Also, the river is best seen in April (at its lowest) and not at its highest in Sept. BTW: yes you can see the 2 colours even on my sorry ass mobile phone :-) Lovely spot it is ..enjoy the vid.

The National Park Pha Taem is located in the province of Ubon Ratchathani, about 100 km east of the city of the same name. Pha Taem is considered as the cradle of Isan and also houses testimonies of an early culture. It lies on the banks of the Mekong, which forms the border with Laos to the east on a length of 63 km. The park covers an area of 340 km² and is crossed by numerous sandstone rocks.
A spectacular sandstone cliff releases the view over the entire river valley.
The biggest attraction are the petroglyphs of Pha Taem. One estimates that the paintings date back 3000 - 4000 years ago.
At the foot of the cliff, early inhabitants of this area have recorded their lives for later generations in the form of more than 300 petroglyphs. In addition to humans and animals, tools for fishing are also presented.
Impressive are the depictions of elephants, the Mekong catfish, dogs, and humans. It turns out that not hunter-gatherers traveled here, but that settlers were sedentary. Obviously, they already had enough time to study art. The numerous handprints are probably the precursors of selfies.
But even science does not know all the facts. It remains to be clarified whether these settlers are ancestors of the Khmer, the Cham, the Laotians or a completely different ethnic group.
Beside the rock paintings, you see also the Sao Chaliang, striking rock formations. Wind and erosion have formed mushroom-shaped sandstone needles with flat rocks at their tops. One has the feeling to walk through an oversize mushroom cultivation.
In this landscape high above the Mekong, you feel that you are almost alone on this earth and nature is untouched.
The park is open daily from 6-18 o'clock. The visitor center from 8:30 -16: 30. An ideal time to visit is the cool season from October to February.
At the confluence of the Mun River and the Mekong, the two different-colored water mingle in a huge river landscape, where trees also protrude from the water. Downstream, the Kaeng Tana National Park includes high cliffs, the Tana rapids, and some waterfalls.

Der Nationalpark liegt in der Provinz Ubon Ratchathani, ca. 100 km östlich der gleichnamigen Stadt. Pha Taem gilt als Wiege des Isan und beherbergt ebenfalls Zeugnisse einer frühen Kultur.
Er liegt direkt am Ufer des Mekong, der im Osten auf einer Länger von 63 km die Grenze zu Laos bildet. Der Park hat eine Fläche von 340 km² und ist von zahlreichen Sandsteinfelsen durchzogen.
Eine spektakuläre Sandstein - Felsklippe gibt die Sicht über das gesamte Flusstal frei.
Die größte Attraktion sind die Felszeichnungen von Pha Taem. Man schätzt das Alter dieser Malereien auf 3000 – 4000 Jahre.
Am Fuß der Felswand haben frühe Bewohner dieses Gebiets ihr Leben in Form von mehr als 300 Felszeichnungen für spätere Generationen festgehalten. Neben Menschen und Tieren sind auch Werkzeuge zum Fischfang dargestellt.
Beeindruckend sind die Darstellungen von Elefanten, dem Mekong-Wels, Hunden und Menschen. Es zeigt sich, dass hier nicht Jäger- und Sammler unterwegs waren, sondern dass Siedler hier sesshaft waren. Offensichtlich hatten sie schon genügend Zeit sich mit Kunst zu beschäftigen. Die zahlreichen Handabdrücke sind vermutlich die Vorläufer von „Selfies“
Aber auch die Wissenschaft kennt nicht alle Fakten. Es bleibt zu klären, ob diese Siedler Vorfahren der Khmer, der Cham, der Laoten, der Lao oder einer ganz anderen Volksgruppe sind.
Neben den Felszeichnungen gibt es hier auch noch die Sao Chaliang, markante Felsformationen. Wind und Erosion haben pilzförmige Sandsteinnadeln mit flachen Felsen an ihren Spitzen geformt. Man hat das Gefühl durch eine überdimensionale Pilzzucht zu spazieren.
In dieser Landschaft hoch über dem Mekong erlebt man den Glauben, fast alleine auf dieser Erde zu sein und die Natur sei unberührt.
Der Park ist täglich von 6-18 Uhr, das Besucherzentrum von 8:30 -16:30 geöffnet. Die ideale Besuchszeit ist die kühle Jahreszeit von Oktober bis Februar.
Am Zusammenfluss des Mun-Flusses und des Mekong mischen sich die zwei verschiedenfarbigen Wasser in einer riesigen Flusslandschaft, in der auch Bäume aus dem Wasser ragen. Flussabwärts umfasst der Kaeng Tana Nationalpark hohe Felsklippen, die Tana Stromschnellen und einige Wasserfälle.
