2011 Kal Haven Bike Trail and South Haven Michigan
My channel with many more trips and adventures:
We stayed a few days at the centrally located Kal-Haven RV Park. This park gave us direct access to the Kal-Haven Trail State Park. It was also less than a mile by back streets to downtown South Haven which we also explored.
Trails of Michigan, The Kal-Haven Trail
The Kal-Haven Trail is a 33 mile former railroad bed with a limestone/slag surface. Linking the city of South Haven, Michigan to the city of Kalamazoo the trail crosses over bridges, passes through small towns and by points of historical interest. It is usable for all non-motorized bicycles, hiking, cross country skiing ....and snowmobiling when there is a 4-inch snow base.

The Kal-Haven Trail, formally known as the Kal-Haven Trail Sesquicentennial State Park, is a rail trail that originally ran 33.5 miles between South Haven, Michigan, to a point just west of the city of Kalamazoo, Michigan, where there is a trailhead. In 2008 the trail was extended east from the trailhead to downtown Kalamazoo as part of the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail. Most of the trail is in Van Buren County and that county operates it between the trailhead and South Haven, including the parts within Kalamazoo County. The Van Buren-controlled portion previously required a trail pass, but as of 2011, the usage fee was dropped.

Biking Kal-Haven, 35 miles from Kalamazoo to South Haven
Unfortunately, I had an issue with my GoPro mount where it was oscillating the camera throughout the ride and combined with the rolling shutter issue that GoPro's inherently have, it made a mess of the video. I cleaned it up a bit with a couple post processing tools.
We biked from Kalamazoo to South Haven over 35 miles in about 3.5 hours (moving time).

South Haven, Michigan
South Haven is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. Most of the city is in Van Buren County, although a small portion extends into Allegan County. The population was 4,403 at the 2010 census.
Because of its position on Lake Michigan, at the mouth of the Black River, South Haven has always been a port city. During settlement, major ship lines stopped there, both passenger and freight. In the early 1900s South Haven became a resort town, sometimes referred to as The Catskills of the Midwest. South Haven is a major regional tourist draw because of its recreational harbor and beaches. It is the western terminus of the Kal-Haven Trail, popular with bicyclists and snowmobilers. Nearby are Van Buren State Park and the Van Buren Trail State Park.
