Mannar, formerly spelled Manar, is a large town and the main town of Mannar District, Northern Province, Sri Lanka. It is governed by an Urban Council.
Wikipedia
Vankalai, in the Mannar district, with its numerous bird species has been declared a sanctuary by the Department of Wild Life Conservation (DWLC), a first in the area since the armed conflict erupted in the north several decades ago. This sanctuary, partly a Wetland, comprises Puliyantivu island, Tiruketiswaram, Pallimunai, Vankalai and the strips of land on either side of the causeway connecting the island of Mannar to the mainland. Covering about 4,800 hectares, it consists of arid-zone thorn scrubland and pastures, waterholes and tanks, sand dunes, mangroves, salt marshes, lagoons and sea-grass beds and maritime grasslands.

Aerial View Of Kalametiya
Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary is a broad picturesque area of wetland composed of rich lagoons, mangrove swamps, grasslands and patches of scrub jungle with the Indian Ocean at the edge. It is an ideal location for undisturbed bird-watching as it is an important site for winter migrants like the Asian Openbill, Eurasian Spoonbill, Greater Flamingo, Black Capped Purple Kingfisher, Egrets, Purple Swamp Hen and Black-winged Stilt who can be seen wading in the shallow marshes.
Kalametiya also provides an important refuge (one of the few remaining on the southern coastal strip) for the smaller mammals of Sri Lanka such as the Grey Mongoose, Grizzled Indian Squirrel and Hanuman Langur
