Kalinjar is a fortress-city in Bundelkhand. The fortress is strategically located on an isolated rocky hill at the end the Vindhya Range, at an elevation of 1,203 feet (367 m) and overlooks the plains of Bundelkhand. It served several of Bundelkhand's ruling dynasties, including the Chandela dynasty of Rajputs in the 10th century, and the Solankis of Rewa under Akabar.

कालिंजर दुर्ग. विंध्य की पहाड़ी पर 700 फीट की ऊंचाई पर स्थित यह किला इतिहास के उतार-चढ़ावों का प्रत्यक्ष गवाह है। किले में आलमगीर दरवाजा, गणेश द्वार, चौबुरजी दरवाजा, बुद्ध भद्र दरवाजा, हनुमान द्वार, लाल दरवाजा और बारा दरवाजा नामक सात द्वारों से प्रवेश किया जा सकता है। किले के भीतर राजा महल और रानी महल नामक शानदार महल बने हुए हैं।

Kalinjar Fort (Hill Top Fort) Bundelkhand - Khajuraho Journey Part II
We visited Pandav Falls and from there we headed to Kalinjar Fort which was the second destination of the day as per our plan. It took us more than two hours to reach there. Passing through villages, I witnessed the culture and the people. It is always interesting to see and learn how people live. . I love exploring places and always tend to find such places which amaze me with their architecture or with their legends.
Kalinjar is a Sanskrit word which means destroyer of time. Kalinjar Fort is located in Bundelkhand region of central India in Banda district of UP state. Situated on a rocky hill, Kalinjar Fort overlooks Bundelkhand. Kalinjar Fort has been a ruling centre for many of the dynasties of Bundelkhand which included Chandela dynasty in 10th centry, and the Solankis dynasty of Rewa. There are many temples in Kalinjar Fortand it is said that these temples date back to 3rd to 5th century to Gupta dynasty.

It served several of Bundelkhand's ruling dynasties, including the Chandela dynasty of Rajputs in the 10th century, and the Solankis of Rewa. The fortress contains several temples dating as far back as the Gupta dynasty of the 3rd-5th centuries.
Neelkanth Templeis one of the famous and religious site in this fort. Here we have seen some amazing stone carvings and rock cut tanks. We also witness the Evening Aarti of Neelkanth Mahadev.

Historians have described Kalinjar as being a fortress unparalled in strength. Seen together with its twin fort at Ajaigarh, Kalinjar formed a formidable line of defence of central India from any attacks from the north. In 1019, Mahmud Ghazni ravaged much of north and west India but had to turn back in the face of stiff opposition from the Kalinjar garrison.
The year 1022 saw a repeat with Ghazni having to stay content with a few gifts from the Chandella ruler but no fort. Had Kalinjar fallen, it is unlikely that Khajuraho would have survived. Today, Khajuraho is a thriving tourist hub, while Kalinjar is a grey area tourists seldom venture into - Source: The Economic Times
