Largest Water Village In The World - Kampong Ayer
TTK merch is here! This is just for fun, and includes several deep cuts:
Take a look inside Kampong Ayer, the largest water village in the world!
Kampong Ayer is located in Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital city of Brunei Darussalam, which is located on the island of Borneo in South-East Asia.
Kampong Ayer is located on the Brunei river. All of the houses here are built on stilts. Kampong Ayer is a fascinating place, and one of the most interesting places I have ever been. 13,000 people live there, making it the biggest water village in the world.
I hope you find it as interesting as I did, and get to visit yourselves!

[Open Brunei] Tourists for a Day: Experiencing Tourism in Brunei
In May 2013 a group of friends decided to find out more about what a typical tourist faces in Brunei, by donning tourist outfits for a day.
Goal: To travel from the Brunei International Airport to the Kampong Ayer Cultural and Tourism Gallery, from the point of view of tourists.
Rules and Constraints: B$20-25 each for food, utilities and transport. Use resources available to tourists, such as tourist maps, brochures, public transport. Speak in English and pretend not to understand Malay (which was hard)

Kampong Air Water Village - Brunei
Visit Brunei: Kampong Ayer Boat Ride
A boat ride along the Brunei River and into Kampong Ayer (Water Village) with glimpses of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque undergoing a face lift and the Sultan of Brunei's main palace of residence, Istana Nurul Iman.
From Wikipedia From a distance the water village looks like a slum. It actually enjoys modern amenities including air conditioning, satellite television, Internet access, plumbing, and electricity. Some of the residents keep potted plants and chickens. Good ol' wiki.

A Bruneian Martial Artist's Journey - Water Village (Kampung Ayer)
Visiting Kampung Ayer with my brother-in-law Amin Rambli on the 9th August 2015.
Kampong Ayer, or the Water Village (Malay: Kampung Air) is an area of Brunei's capital city Bandar Seri Begawan that is situated over Brunei Bay. 39,000 people live in the Water Village. This represents roughly ten percent of the nation's total population. All of the Water Village buildings are constructed on stilts above the Brunei River.
People have lived in Kampong Ayer for over 1300 years. Antonio Pigafetta dubbed it the Venice of the East when the fleet of Ferdinand Magellan visited in 1521. The district is a culturally important part of Brunei that preserves the nation's river dwelling origins. According to geography professor Abdul Aziz of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam, this is the largest and most famous water settlement of Southeast Asia. It was historically the very core of Brunei and one of the most important centres of trade in Borneo.
As par of His Majesty The Sultan of Brunei's plans to improve the standard of living for the population in Kampong Ayer, The Sultan decreed to build modern, two story stilt house made of concrete in the center of the Kampong Ayer around the years of 2013-2014 and the project continue on. These houses would be given to the people in need of new house, and not wishing to live on land.
Please enjoy the tour of the water village.

Kampung Ayer Brunei Darussalam Part 2

Labuan - Water Village Traditional Living
For more great information, photos and video about Malaysia, visit Virtual Malaysia Social Travel Channel -
This is Kampung Air Patau Patau 2, established in the 1930s; the whole village was wiped out by a Japanese bomb during WWII. The resilient villagers rebuilt the village from scratch once the war was over. The architecture and concept of the water village dates back to their ancestors in Brunei. To this day, the water village residents incorporate their Kedayan Bruneian culture and customs into their daily lives.
Lest you think that these homes are not for the sea-sick, you can be rest assured that the houses are remarkably stable even the ones that were built over 60 years ago. The secret was in the belian wood used as the houses foundation which can stand strong for centuries to come.
The friendly host families will be all too glad to serve you with some of their traditional delicacies including ambuyat, traditional Bruneian sago dish that goes well with a sour and spicy sambal dip made with young mangoes, chilli and dried shrimps.
In the afternoons, you can observe the village children playing kites or if you so fancy, indulge in catching a fish right at your homes backyard for a nominal fee, of course. Imagine relaxing on the wooden bench, a cup of coffee in one hand and a fishing line in the other. Every so often, your line heaves and strains. When you excitedly pull it up 9 times out of 10, it will be a catfish rather than some old discarded clothing. Traditional dance performances can also be arranged upon request and you can definitely participate in some fun village games.
Kampung Air Patau Patau 2 comes equipped with water and power supply, telephone and sewage lines, streetlights, water taxi jetty, grocery shops, handicraft shops, clinics, schools and surau (a place of worship for muslims that is smaller than a mosque). Being surrounded by water, the main mode of transportation is the boat and most of the houses own one. These houses can be rather spacious and well decorated with heavy antiques and every living comfort imaginable on the inside.
Staying at this delightful and charming traditional water village is certainly an incomparable experience.
A Short Visit to Kg Ayer
went on a little feildtrip with some friends to one of the oldest part of the Bruneian heritage - Kg Ayer. We visited both the village and the riverside market, Tamu Kianggeh. It was great adventure.
Apologies for some super shaky parts, I'm kinda rusty at this.
Video features places we visited - the market, the culture museum, parts of the village.. and some pictures I took on our tour.
Highlights of the tour:
- a nice view of the SOAS mosque + the yayasan
- Jong Batu (I think that's what it is) [It's one of the legends, google it]
- Part of the Istana Nurul Iman
