Kanazawa in Autumn // A Visual Diary
Kanazawa, autumn looks good on you.
I had a truly magical time visiting Kanazawa last weekend. Kanazawa is the capital city of Ishikawa Prefecture on the Sea of Japan. People come from all over to experience this beautiful city in autumn, when it is bursting with auburn color.
Follow me around Kanazawa as I wander through empty streets, fascinating museums, illuminated gardens, and stunning fall foliage. I will add time stamps below, so you can pick and choose where to visit...
If you'd like to learn more about visiting Kanazawa, check out my latest blog post, Kanazawa: 48 Hours in Japan's Golden City, here:

金沢能面・能装束着装体験 a Japanese traditional entertainment Noh play
金沢能楽美術館にて、日本の伝統芸能である「能」のお面と衣装を着せていただく能面・能装束着装を体験しました。
The experience by which a costume of a Japanese traditional entertainment Noh play is put on.In KANAZAWA NOH MUSEUM.
装束は重く、能面はわずかに小さく空いた目の穴から見るだけのため、装束と能面をつけて動くとき、本当におずおずとしか動けませんでした。
I could look around only from a hole of a small eye of a Noh mask. The attire was also heavy. When moving, I was afraid.

Mi mancheranno queste terme dall'acqua color ambra scura! ^___^

Kata Complete
Kata (型 or 形 literally: form?), a Japanese word, are the detailed choreographed patterns of movements practised either solo or in pairs. The term form is used for the corresponding concept in non-Japanese martial arts in general
Part 1 T'ai chi (from Stillness)(太極拳) is an internal Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and its health benefits. It is also typically practiced for a variety of other personal reasons: its hard and soft martial art technique, demonstration competitions, and longevity. As a result, a multitude of training forms exist, both traditional and modern, which correspond to those aims. Some of t'ai chi training forms are especially known for being practiced with relatively slow movement.
Part 2 Kabuki (歌舞伎?) is a classical Japanese dance-drama. Kabuki theatre is known for the stylization of its drama and for the elaborate make-up worn by some of its performers.
The individual kanji, from left to right, mean sing (歌), dance (舞), and skill (伎). Kabuki is therefore sometimes translated as the art of singing and dancing.
Part 3 Chadō (茶道). The Japanese tea ceremony, also called the Way of Tea, is a Japanese cultural activity involving the ceremonial preparation and presentation of matcha, powdered green tea.
Part 4 Bunkai (分解) literally meaning analysis or disassembly is a term used in Japanese martial arts referring to the application of fighting techniques extracted from the moves of a form.
Bunkai is usually performed with a partner or a group of partners which execute predefined attacks, and the student performing the kata responds with defenses, counterattacks, or other actions, based on a part of the kata. This allows the student in the middle to understand what the movements in kata are meant to accomplish.

Kanazawa
Tokyo to Kanazawa on the Hokuriku Shinkansen _
The Hakutaka is the slower of the two train categories that run along the entire length of the Hokuriku Shinkansen. It skips many stations between Tokyo and Nagano, but stops at most of the stations beyond Nagano. The Hakutaka features the same train sets as the Kagayaki, but it does offer non-reserved seating. It requires 20 to 50 minutes longer than the Kagayaki to make the trip between Tokyo and Kanazawa.
Kanazawa Station is one of the world's most beautiful stations.
There is a glass dome called Motenashi (Welcome) Dome, which looks like a huge umbrella, at the east entrance of Kanazawa Station. The dome has a wooden gate called Tsuzumi-mon, which symbolizes a traditional Japanese instrument called tsuzumi (hand drums). The underground of the dome serves as an information corner and event space.
In recent years, the area has become a busier shopping quarter with the construction of large-sized shopping buildings.
Kenrokuen (兼六園) in Kanazawa is justifiably classified as one of Japan's three most beautiful landscape gardens alongside Mito's Kairakuen and Okayama's Korakuen.
The name Kenrokuen literally means Garden of the Six Sublimities, referring to spaciousness, seclusion, artificiality, antiquity, abundant water and broad views, which according to Chinese landscape theory are the six essential attributes that make up a perfect garden. A stroll around Kenrokuen will help with understanding this landscape theory as the grounds are teeming with water features, bridges, teahouses, trees, flowers, stones, viewpoints and hidden nooks to discover.
Water is diverted from a distant river by a sophisticated water system constructed in 1632 to feed Kenrokuen's various streams and ponds including the two main ponds in the garden, Kasumigaike and Hisagoike. The over two-meter tall Kotojitoro Lantern,(resembling a Japanese harp, kojo_) uniquely built with two legs instead of one, stands at the northern bank of Kasumigaike Pond and is an iconic symbol of Kenrokuen. In addition, a fountain below Kasumigaike Pond is one of Japan's oldest, and is powered by the drop in elevation from the pond which causes water to shoot out 3.5 meters high. Meanwhile, nearby Hisagoike Pond features a small waterfall.
Stopped by the 21st Century Museum to see the Leandro Erlich's Swimming Pool, a pool where people appear to be underwater (entry inside the pool requires paid admission);
Lastly had time only for Nagamachi (長町) _ a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals.

The Swimming Pool 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Art by Leandro ERLICH
Music by Animal Collective's Banshee Beat
In one of the Museum's courtyards is a swimming pool framed by a limestone deck. When seen from the deck, the pool appears to be filled with deep, shimmering water. In fact, however, a layer of water only some 10 centimeters deep is suspended over transparent glass. Below the glass is an empty space with aquamarine walls that viewers can enter. The work sets up an unfolding sequence of experiences—we view the pool through the glass wall enclosing the courtyard; from the deck, looking down into the pool; and from the interior of the pool, looking up. The Swimming Pool might hence be considered a place where, slowly, with time, different perspectives and perceptions of self and others all come to intersect.
