Kadurugoda Viharaya is an ancient Buddhist temple situated in Chunnakam, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka. The temple is located in a small hamlet called Kandarodai and it is one of the few Buddhist temples remaining in Jaffna today.

Kantharodai Archaeological Site (කදුරුගොඩ විහාරය)
According to historical legends, Buddha resolved a throne between two Naga kings named chulodara and Mahodara in Nagadipa island At Jaffna and stayed this place retreat for sometime.
Sixty monks who lived puvanativu(punkudutiv) attained “Arahanship” and died after consuming poison food and their ashes were buried in this place a world to reveal the historic antiquities of the region.
Subsequently Srilankan Department Of archaeology conducted an excavation. According to stories here must have 60 stupas but on archaeological research in 1996 at kantarodai and discovered 57 small and medium sized Buddhist Stupas.

The site was discovered in 1917 by the Magistrate P.E. Pieris where he reported that bricks from this site is being carried a way by cart loads by the residents around the area for building of houses. An excavation done in the 1917-1919 has unearthed remains of a shrine room, parts of Buddha Statues, Bodhisattva statues, Buddha foot imprints and coins belonging to pre christian era.

Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya (Kantarodai)
'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya', the most ancient Vihaaraya in the North, now buried in ruins is in 'Kadhurugoda' ('Kantarodai' in Tamil). This is situated in North Vallikaaman, Yaapanaya. This site is also called 'Kadhivungoda Vihaaraya' in the 'Sinhala Naama Potha'.
'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya' is also called 'Raajayatana Chêthiya'. As a 'Kiripalu' Tree had been planted at this site to commemorate the occasion of Lord Buddha's visit to 'Kadhurugoda', it appears this name had it's origin from this event. 'Kiripalu' in Paali Language is 'Raajayatanan' (Bachanania Latifolia), hence the name 'Raajayatana'.
This archeolgically important site was discovered originally by Dr. P.E. Pieris of the Ceylon Civil Service, in 1913. It is maintaind now as a reservation by the Department of Archeology.
In this Chethiya, many supposed relics of Lord Gauthaa Buddha were to have been found. The bases of twenty-two (22) Sthoopas, a head of Bôdhisathva in white Lime-Stone, pillar stumps, a stone slab with the sacred foot-print of Lord Gauthama Buddha, broken Buddha images made of Granite and Lime-Stone, Forty-eight (48) finials of small Sthoopas and a stone Pillar inscription belonging to the 10th Century AD were unearthed during excavations. The diameter of some of these Sthoopas range from eight (08) to twelve (12) feet. One was nearly twenty-three (23) feet. It is beleived that the small sthoopas were guradian edifices around the main Dhaagæba. They are all situated close to each other on a site with an extent of about two (02)acres.
A large quantity of coins believed to have been in circulation between the first (01) and thriteenth (13)centuries in the island were among the large number of tresures unearthed from this site. A huge Lime-Stone Buddha image of a very tranquil stance was also recovered and is (was) exhibited in the Yaapanaya Archeological Museum.
'King Bhaathika Thissa' (140~164 AD) made a 'Dhaathu Mandapaya' at the foot of the 'Kiripalu' Tree close to the Chêthiya and also a Monastery on the site. For the provision of Rice from the monks in this monastery, a large village and vast extent of paddy lands were set apart by this King. 'King Aggabhodh'i (608~618 AD) made charitable donations for the maintenance of the 'Kadhurugoda Vihaaraya'.

It is among the country's sixteen holiest Buddhist shrines (Solosmasthana).According to contemporary history, the Gautama buddha visited the site after five years of attaining Enlightment to settle the dispute between two warring Naga kings, Chulodara and Mahodara.

After Mihindu Maha Thero brought Buddhism to Sri Lanka in 250BC, his sister, Theri Sanghamitta arrived in Sri Lanka with a Sacred Bo Sapling one year later to this port. The temple Samudda-panasala (Jambukola Viharaya) was built commemorating the arrival of the Bo sapling by King Devanampiya Tissa (250-210 BC). Later, the same king planted one of the first eight shoots of the Sri Maha Bodhi, on the same place where he kept the original tree before bringing it to Anuradhapura. King Vijayabahu I (1070–1110) has restored this site. The remains of the vihara, such as the Buddha footprint stone and vatadage seen up to recent times no longer exist there.
This port gradually faded in importance while port Mahathiththa/ Mahathota/ Mantota (now Mantai) located at the mouth of Malvatu oya developed as a key intersection of sea-routes and the Dambakola Patuna Viharaya was lost in time. The Great Chronicle of Sri Lanka, the Mahavamsa and Samanthapaasasdika mention pilgrims coming from Yonaka country to Jambukola to worship the Jambukola Viharaya in the ancient times.

By the coast, star-shaped Jaffna Fort was built by the Portuguese in the 17th century and later occupied by the Dutch and British. Jaffna Public Library is a symbol of the city’s post-war regeneration. Jaffna Archaeological Museum has Dutch cannons and pre-colonial artifacts.
