Crete | Kapsa Monastery. Of all the many monasteries in Crete, the one at Kapsa on the southeast coast is among the most scenic. The monastery is actually built into the cliffs at the entrance to a canyon overlooking Makris gialos Bay.
The monastery, dating from the 14th century, is still active. If you visit, we'll show you the remains of a 19th century mystic named Gerontogiannis, who was a kind of cult figure in the district with alleged powers of prophecy and divination. His body rests in a silver casket inside the monastery.
Kapsa monastery is remarkable for maintaining a simple style where the cliff face serves as an outer wall.
To get to Kapsa monastery, drive south on the main highway from Sitia for about 16km , turning left onto a side road at Pezoulas. Or take the eastbound road from Ierapetra for about 25 kilometres, turning right after Analipsi.

KPHTH - A Trip on the Makry-Gialos Tourist Train
With nothing better to do a group of us took a 'Singalong' train ride along the south east coast to Kapsa Monastery. The trip takes 90 minutes and costs 15 euros with a 30 minute stop to picnic or visit the monastery. By the way the melons were 1 euro each!

Panagia Faneromeni Monastery - Crete - Greece (Μονή Παναγίας Φανερωμένης)
The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni (Μονή Παναγίας Φανερωμένης) about 9km west of Sitia town and 1km away from the beach of Platani.
It is built on the edge of the Agioi Pantes canyon.
The name Panagia Faneromeni derives from the icon of the Virgin Mary which was found in the cave inside the monastery.
The monastery is quite old, although the date of its foundation can not be accurately determined.
It is is believed to have been founded before 1455 by hermit Ioannikios, but was later destroyed by pirate Barbarossa.
It was restored by Monk Gennadios in 1624.
In the centre of the monastery, there is the two-aisled church dedicated to the Assumption (celebrated 15 August) and St. George (celebrated 3 November).
The church contains frescoes dating back to 1455, which were unfortunately blackened by the smoke when the Turks set the church on fire.
