A Day with the Karen Tribe Native Elephants, near Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand
In November 2018 we had the opportunity to visit the Karen Tribe's native elephants in their village in Northern Thailand. We were put off by the very many more commercial/ touristy elephant parks that can be found closer to Chiang Mai itself. We were looking for something with a more conservation theme where we knew the elephants were being cared for as well as possible, so when we came across the chance to help care for an elephant for a day, and learn a bit more about elephant welfare, we jumped at the chance.
And what a great day it was!

A look at our fantastic day with the Karen Tribe Native Elephants. August 2019. After a lot of research we found it to be the most ethical elephant experience in Chiang Mai. All the elephants wandered around freely, no chains or fences to restrict their movements.

BEST ETHICAL ELEPHANT SANCTUARY ! THAILAND Vlog #2
BEST DAY EVER! A day in the life of an elephant trainer, spent in a Karen tribe village near Chiang Mai (Thailand) with super HEALTHY and HAPPY elephants! ???? I did my research and most definetly would not had wanted to participate to any sort of animal cruelty. In fact today was just the opposite and if you ever want to spend some time with elephants in Thailand, I super highly recommend Karen Tribe's Native Elephants! We each had our own elephant, which we had to take care of. We learned the morning routine to check that they are healthy, got to feed them (a lot), bathe them, walk them, and even made plant based medicine to keep them strong and healthy.

Hi guys! I am so happy to share with you our experience at the Karen Elephant Serenity by Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, Thailand. This is truly one of the best experiences ever! We had a whole day to enjoy with 5 elephants including a baby elephant!. Our group was very small, only 7 of us, which made it perfect to take lots of pictures, feed them and know more about these rescued animals.
Why choosing Karen Elephant Serenity ?
First of all, the opinions reflected below are truly genuine, I was not paid to make this video or write this review. Having said that, I was very happy with the service and the whole experience with the Karen Tribe. There are lots of Sanctuaries in Chiang Mai but double check before booking, some will have lots of people with only a few elephants (you will be fighting for pictures!), others are offering elephant rides and shows which is totally a contradiction; sanctuaries are for elephants to be free, not to work.
How to book?
We couldn’t buy/book online, so we had to go to the Elephant Nature Park Office in Chiang Mai directly. We booked 2 days in advance.
What was the itinerary?
We were picked up at our hotel at around 8.30am in an air conditioner van. We drove for about 20 min and during this time we were shown a safety video, then we got into another vehicle until we arrived the Sanctuary.
Afterwards we changed clothes into the Karen Traditional Outfit. This idea was excellent because at the end of the day you end up with lots of mud and dirt all over!
Next we prepared food for the elephants by cutting sugar cane. We fed the elephants all morning, we took lots of pictures and had a small walk thought a flat trail, then we walked back to the camp for a wonderful vegetarian lunch, which was lovely!. By the way, the water was for free all day.
In the afternoon we prepared healthy rice ball snacks for the elephants, and once again fed them and enjoyed two mud baths (I didn’t know but the elephants use the mud as sunscreen).
After a fun day it was time to say goodbye to the elephants, we showered, changed clothes and went back to the hotel.
If you are looking for a Sanctuary in Chiang Mai I recommend this one . I hope they continue doing such an amazing job!.

Full Day Elephant Experience | Chiang Mai, Thailand
Today is our 2nd day exploring around Chiang Mai and we are so excited because we are doing a full day Elephant Experience with Into the Wild Elephant Camp.
We get picked up and drive about 1.5 hours outside of Chiang Mai to the camp. Our guide introduces us to their 5 elephants and explains that they were rescued from other camps where they were being poorly treated.
We get started feeding the elephants bananas. We each get a full bag of 30 or so bananas and we are amazed at how quickly the elephants devour them.
We then head out into the jungle to trek with them for around 2 hours. It is quite the slow pace with a lot of stops for them to feed. We learn that elephants eat around 19 hours of the day and we can tell they have a serious appetite!
We head back to camp for some lunch and then make medicine balls for the elephants out of a bunch of natural ingredients. And finally the last activity on the agenda, we give the elephants a mud bath before rinsing them off in the river.
It is now time to head back to Chiang Mia after a very full and exciting day.
We booked this experience with Into the Wild Elephant Camp. We did a lot of research on the different company options to make sure we were choosing an ethical one. Into the Wild strives to provide the elephants with a comfortable and free environment in the jungle and we had an amazing experience interacting with the elephants in their element.
