Project: Construction of Multi-lane Road Tunnel Under the River Karnaphuli, Chittagong, Bangladesh
The Karnaphuli river has divided Chittagong city into two parts. One part contains the main city and the sea port and the other part contains the industrial zone. 2 (two) bridges have already been constructed over the Karnaphuli river, which are not sufficient to cater to the need of existing traffic. Due to river morphology, siltation on the bed of the Karnaphuli river is a major threat for proper functioning of the Chittagong Port. To address the problem BBA decided to construct a tunnel under the Karnaphuli river instead of constructing another bridge to connect the two parts of Chittagong city. A MOU was signed with Goverment of China to construct the tunnel on G-to-G basis. The commercial contract was signed on 30/06/2015 with China Communications Construction Company Ltd. (CCCC) to construct the multi lane road tunnel under the river Karnaphuli, Chittagong.

Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) is going to construct a 9 -kilometre road-cum-embankment and set up 14 regulators at canal mouths along the River Karnaphuli to save some areas from water-logging and reduce traffic congestion in the city.
The work will be carried out under a project titled ‘Construction of Road on the bank of River Karnaphuli from Kalurghat bridge to Chaktai Khal (canal)’.
CDA will implement the project at a cost of Tk 1978.88 crore and within three years starting from July this year.
The project was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC).

দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার সবচেয়ে বড় পাতাল পথ বঙ্গবন্ধু টানেলে বা কর্ণফুলী টানেল এর মোট দৈর্ঘ্য ৩ হাজার ৪০০ মিটার বা ৩ দশমিক ৪ কিলোমিটার। ইতিমধ্যে টানেলের ৩৬০ মিটার অংশের খনন কাজ শেষ। এর মধ্যে টিউবের দৈর্ঘ্য ২ হাজার ৪৫০ মিটার। নদীর তলদেশে ৯৪ মিটার দীর্ঘ ও ২২ হাজার টন ওজনের টানেল বোরিং মেশিন (টিবিএম) দিয়ে চলছে খননের মূল কাজ। প্রতি আটটি সেগমেন্টে তৈরি হচ্ছে দুই মিটারের একটি রিং। ৩৬০ মিটার অংশে বসানো হয়েছে ১৮০টি রিং। প্রতিদিন গড়ে ৪ থেকে ৫ মিটার করে টানেল নির্মাণ কাজ এগিয়ে যাচ্ছে।
এভাবে দ্রুতগতিতে এগিয়ে চলছে দেশের প্রথম ‘বঙ্গবন্ধু টানেলে’র নির্মাণ কাজ। বর্তমানে সামগ্রিক কাজের অগ্রগতি ৪৫ শতাংশ। গত ছয় মাসেই এগিয়েছে ১৪ শতাংশ। ‘ডুয়েল টু লেন’ টাইপের ‘শিল্ড ড্রাইভেন মেথড’ পদ্ধতিতে নির্মাণাধীন টানেলটির কাজ নির্ধারিত মেয়াদ ২০২২ সালেই শেষ হবে। এর মাধ্যমে ২০২২ সালে বিশ্ববাসী দেখবে চীনের সাংহাইয়ের আদলে ‘ওয়ান সিটি টু টাউন’। দেশের প্রথম এই সুড়ঙ্গ পথ কর্ণফুলী নদীর দুই পাশের দুই টাউনকে সংযুক্ত করবে। যোগাযোগ মন্ত্রণালয়ের বাংলাদেশ সেতু কর্তৃপক্ষ (বিবিএ) প্রকল্পটি বাস্তবায়ন করছে। ২০১৬ সালের ১৪ অক্টোবর টানেল নির্মাণ কাজের ভিত্তিপ্রস্তর স্থাপন করেন প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ও চীনের রাষ্ট্রপতি শি জিনপিং।
The Karnaphuli River Tunnel in the port of Chittagong, Bangladesh is a proposed 3.4 kilometer-long, 10 meter-wide tunnel under the river. The project includes approximately 6 kilometers of connecting roads, and will connect the port of Chittagong to the industrial area of the city to relieve pressure on the three existing bridges. Sedimentation issues precluded the possibility of building an additional bridge. The tunnel is expected to be completed in 2022, and will be the first of its kind in Bangladesh.

The Muradpur Flyover (officially the Muradpur-Lalkhan Bazar Flyover; originally the Akhtaruzzaman Flyover) is the largest highway overpass in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Its foundation stone was laid in 2013 by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina; construction officially began in 2014[citation needed][2][3]
The flyover was partially opened on 17 June 2017, and became fully accessible soon after.[4] Since its opening, the flyover has seen three auto accidents, which claimed the lives of four people.[5]

কর্ণফুলি Kôrnophuli; also spelt Karnafuli, the largest and most
important river in Chittagong and the Chittagong
Hill Tracts, is a 667-metre (2,188 ft) wide river in
the south-eastern part of Bangladesh. Originating from
the Lushai hills in Mizoram, India, it flows 270
kilometres (170 mi) southwest through Chittagong Hill
Tracts and Chittagong into the Bay of Bengal. A large
hydroelectric power plant using Karnaphuli river was
built in the Kaptai region during the 1960s. The mouth
of the river hosts Chittagong's sea port, the main port
of Bangladesh.
Chittagong City:
Chittagong is situated on the banks of the Karnaphuli
River between the Chittagong Hill Tracts and the Bay of
Bengal. The city is a noteworthy seaside seaport city
and monetary focus in southeastern Bangladesh.
The Chittagong Metropolitan Area has a populace of
more than 6.5 million, making it the second biggest
city in Bangladesh. It is the capital of an eponymous
locale and division. A water treatment plant has been set
up by Chittagong Port Authority to source water from the
Karnaphuli river for its uses. The plant will make the
port self-reliant in its water needs
Transportation:-
The Government has awarded a contract to build a
two lane tunnel underneath the Karnaphuli river to
China Communication Construction Company (CCCC).
This will be the first underwater tunnel in Bangladesh.
CCCC will receive $706 million for its services with total
costs expected to be over $1 billion
Aquatic life:-
The river is home to Ganges river dolphin,
which is an endangered species.
Hilsa used to be common in the river,
but have nearly disappeared from the river due
to pollution
Kaptai dam:-
Kaptai Lake on Karnaphuli River
The Kaptai Dam is the location of the Karnafuli
Hydroelectric Power Station, constructed in Kaptai in
1962 and the only hydro-electric power plant in the
country. An earth-filled dam on the Karnaphuli River,
the Kaptai Dam created the Kaptai Lake, which acts as
the water reservoir for the hydropower station.
The power plant produces a total of 230 megawatts
of electricity.
Pollution:-
Like many rivers in Bangladesh,
Karnaphuli is heavily polluted by agricultural runoff.
Reducing the amount of oxygen available and harming
aquatic life in the river.[8] In 2015, a train carrying
oil crashed over a tributary of the river.
The spill caused environmental degradation.
