Kashmir Great Lakes Trek 2018
Kashmir Great Lakes is the prettiest trek in India. Some treks come close to it, but at the end of the day, it is always the Kashmir Great Lakes (KGL) that is our most beautiful trek.
It is not on every trek that you get to see five beautiful alpine lakes. Vishansar Lake, Krishansar Lake, Gadsar Lake, Gangabal Lake, Nundkol Lake. Each lake competing with the other in beauty that is almost divine. What’s more, these lakes come one right after the other. So everyday there is a new one to look forward to.
What makes these lakes even prettier are the snow patches that feed these lakes. You see them sliding off the mountain into the lakes. Sometimes you’ll see milky white icebergs floating on the lake’s inky blue surface.

What is even lovelier are the lush green, grassy shores of the lakes. To get a chance to go for a long walk on the shores of these lakes is pure trekking bliss.
Then there are the stunning meadows of Kashmir. They are present on each day of the trek. These meadows come in every shape and size, sometimes many in a day. On the first day, clumps of maple and pine grow like an oasis in these meadows. On the second day, they roll off a pass descending down a wide valley where horses run and sheep graze. On the third day, just below the Gadsar pass, wildflowers grow in wild abandon on these meadows. On the fourth day, the grassy plain of Satsar looks almost manicured – with a twinkling stream gliding through it.
Suffice to say, if you have not done the KGL, then you have not done the most beautiful trek in India.

Here’s presenting our much awaited video: ‘Srinagar - The City of Bridges (Version 2.0)’.
Here’s presenting our much awaited video: ‘Srinagar - The City of Bridges (Version 2.0)’.
As promised, this video includes newly constructed bridges as well as the ones that didn’t feature in the previous year’s version.
A brief overview:
Srinagar is also known as the Venice of the East. River Jhelum is an integral part of the old city of Srinagar. Nine bridges span the River Jhelum, and many tiny ones intersect the network of waterways that flow through the old city. These nine bridges are Zero Bridge, Amira Kadal, Budshah Kadal, Habba Kadal, Fateh Kadal, Zaina Kadal, Aali Kadal, Nawa Kadal and Safa Kadal, ‘Kadal’ being the Kashmiri word for bridge. Of these Budshah Bridge and Zero Bridge are the newest; the former having been constructed by the British in this century. Presently, the oldest bridge is Fateh Kadal, too dilapidated for actual use. However, many of the old bridges have been replaced with new concrete bridges and a few new ones have also been added in view of the increasing traffic. The most prominent among these is the Abdullah Bridge, situated near the Tourist Reception Centre.
The view from any of the old city's bridges is wholly and unmistakably Kashmiri. Old brick buildings line the banks. The distinctive pagoda-like roof of a mosque or a shrine enlivens the horizon, and in the muddy water of the River Jhelum, a straggling row of doongas flanks the edges. These boats, with their shingled roofs, are the forerunners of Srinagar’s houseboat. A particular community lives in them. Formerly this community was associated with ferrying people, livestock and food grains along the river. The past still lingers in their lifestyles even if their occupation has changed. Occasionally one may catch sight of a doonga making its stately progress down the river as the owner shifts residence. Doongas are sparsely furnished - virtually no furniture is seen except for the kitchen, which gleams with copper utensils of every description that line the shelves from floor to ceiling.
Kashmir in WINTERS
Kashmir, heaven on earth.
This is one place that never fails to amaze no matter how many times you go. I have been to Kashmir many times, but Kashmir in winters is beyond imagination.
This time winter was no ordinary, record snowfall in the last 10 years as reported, it was truly a mesmerizing experience to travel through white wilderness and experience this majestic land.
I hope you all enjoy and visit Kashmir soon and share your experience :-) Thanks for watching.

SRINAGAR LAKE DAL KASHMIR INDIA
1975
Srinagar (Hindi: श्रीनगर, Urdu: سرینگر, Kashmiri: سِرېنَگَر सिरीनगर) , is the summer capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India, and is situated in the valley of Kashmir. The city lies on both banks of the Jhelum River, a tributary of the Indus River. The city is famous for its lakes and houseboats floating over them. It is also known for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts and dry fruits. Srinagar is 876 km north of Delhi. The headquarters of the Srinagar District are situated in the city.
Tourism is the most significant segment of the city's economy. The city of Srinagar has been serving as a gateway to some of the most scenic and beautiful places of the Indian subcontinent. For decades, tourism has been contributing massively to the economy of the city for last several decades, but it has been adversely affected on account of insurgent activities by certain elements.
Dal Lake, going from the Mughal Gardens side back to SrinagarSrinagar is well known for its lakes. Dal Lake with its houseboats is famous all over the world. Srinagar is a small and beautiful city with a wonderful climate in the summer. Just outside the city are found the beautiful Shalimar Gardens created by Jehangir, the Mughal emperor, in 1619.
Houseboats were introduced accidentally to Kashmir: members of the Indian Civil Service serving in the plains who vacationed in Kashmir were not permitted to build permanent homes because of the then Maharaja's suspicion of a British presence in Srinagar. They thus chose to live in houseboats. The first such, named Victory, was designed by Mr. M.T. Kenhard in 1888. There are now about five hundred on the Lake. Srinagar has several gardens which are part of the several such gardens laid by the Mughal emperors across the Indian subcontinent, and which are known as Mughal gardens. The Mughal Gardens located in Srinagar and its close vicinity include Chasma Shahi (the royal fountains); Pari Mahal (the palace of the fairies); Nishat Bagh (the garden of spring); Sahlimar Bagh; and the Nashim Bagh.

The Tarsar Lake or Tar Sar is an almond-shaped, oligotrophic alpine lake situated in the Kashmir Valley, specifically in Aru,
The Tarsar Lake is dominated by the peaks of the Kolahoi mountain some 20 km to the east. The lake is separated by a mountain with a minimum peak elevation of 4,000 metres (13,000 ft) from another lake of the same nature known as Marsar Lake, which is in the vicinity of Dachigam National Park.
The Tarsar Lake is drained by an outlet stream which falls into the Lidder River at Lidderwat, 15 km to the east. Being the nearest seasonal settlement, Lidderwat is located on the trek route to the lake from Aru, Pahalgam. The Marsar Lake on the other hand drains out and flows in the opposite direction of the Tarsar Lake
The Tarsar Lake is accessible only during the summer preferably from June to Mid September; during the winter, the treks are closed because of the heavy snowfall. It can be reached from Srinagar, via a 102 km motorable road which leads through Anantnag and Pahalgam to the Aru trekking camp. The alpine meadow of Lidderwat lies at the halfway point of the two-day trek to the lake and happens to be mostly the basecamp for most of the trekkers. One could visit the lake and come back to his basecamp at Lidderwat in the same day.
An alternate route leads through Ganderbal and a trekking starting point at Surfraw in the Sind Valley. Due to the steepness of the trek, it is preferable to approach the lake by the Aru-Lidderwat trek and return via the Surfraw-Sind Valley trek.[citation needed] On this route, walkers may see the Uppar portion and Nallah of Surfraw (Soraf Raw) village.[5] Another accessible route to Tarsar and Marsar is a place called Nage-Baren via Tral.
The other route least tread is via Dachigam Srinagar. Trekking on this route leads to Marsar Lake first and then crossing a mountain of an elevation of some 4200m to the fish shaped Tarsar Lake.

Trekking in Himalayas | Kashmir Great Lakes | Gadsar |Day 5
Kashmir great lake trek is one of the best trek in India. It covers some of the most beautiful meadows and valleys in J&K.Views from those three high altitude passes were spectacular.
Our whole trip was spanned over 3-13th Aug 2016.our journey was like kolkata-delhi-srinagar-gagangir near sonamarg-
7day trek including one buffer day -naranag-shrinagar-delhi-kolkata.
srinagar situation was in total turmoil .Curfew was there for those entire days.going out and in to srinagar was total midnight travel.
it was pretty thrilling and dangerous .Indiahikes and their local coordinators took care of the
srinagar stay and transport quiet good. Those guys were really helpful. There was no problem in actual trail.we had a great team of 17 members, great trek leader and friendly support stuffs.Trek was challenging but it was totally worth of it.
