Katakolon - Greece in ????????
Katakolon is a port-village on the south-western part of Greece. It is the gate by sea of famous Ancient Olympia, birth land of the Olympic Games. Each year hundreds of cruise ships and more than one million cruise passengers visit Katakolon Greece.
This video was recorded 3 years before we did our World Tour with Costa Luminosa. In december 2014 we made a cruise with MSC Fantasia and had a stop at Katakolon. It was day 105 of the World Tour with Costa Luminosa in 2018.
Katakolon and Olympia, Greece
The ship docked in Katakolon, on the west coast of Greece. I took a trip to Olympia - which was nearby - and then to a great farm with olive groves for a super Greek lunch and fun.

The footage ends with the views from the MSC Divina as the ship leaves port, and features an emotional farewell by a young lady who is evidently a friend of somebody on board the ship.
Katakolo, Pyrgos, Greece, Europe
Katakolo is a seaside town in the municipality of Pyrgos in western Elis, Greece. It is situated on a headland overlooking the Ionian Sea and separating the Gulf of Kyparissia from the rest of the Ionian. It is 11 km west of downtown Pyrgos. The small village of Agios Andreas, which in ancient times was the natural harbour for Ancient Olympia, lies northwest of Katakolo. A railway connects Katakolo with Pyrgos and Olympia, but along with the rest of the rail network in the Peloponnese, services have been suspended since 2011 for economic reasons. In the Middle Ages, Katakolo was the site of the fortress of Pontikon or Pontikokastro (Ποντκόν, Ποντικόκαστρο), which the Frankish rulers of the Principality of Achaea called Beauvoir or Belveder. The fortress was built by the Byzantines and taken over by the Franks ca. 1205. The port of Katakolo is a popular stop for cruise ships, offering an opportunity for passengers to visit the site of Olympia. Low hills with forests surround Katakolo. Visitors here have the opportunity to visit the ancient port of Olympia, the sunken ancient city of Pheia. Ancient Pheia was on the other side of the mountain of Ichthys, now Agios Andreas, within walking distance of Katakolo port. The lighthouse of Katakolo was built in 1865. One of the most important sites of Katakolo is the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology. The remains of the medieval Pontikokastro/Beauvoir castle still stand on a hilltop northeast of the modern port, but the castle is mostly ruined and its original appearance can only be surmised.

Katakolon Port Olympia Greece, Norwegian Jade Cruise Port of Call (2 Min Summary)
We were on a cruise on the Norwegian Jade out of Rome. The first port of call was Katakolon, Greece. This was the gateway to the ancient city of Olympia.
In this short video of 1min 48 sec, I show you clips of what we did during our day in port. We visited the ancient city of Olympia where the ancient Olympics were held, the museum next door, walked through the streets of the modern village of Olympia, had a coffee break (crepes and pizza), visited Kremasti Monastery before heading back to the ship.
This was Day 3 of our cruise, on the Norwegian Jade, sailing out of Rome to ports in Greece, Turkey and Italy. Day 2 was a sea day.
Today, we dock at the Greek port of Katakolon. Frankly, prior to this cruise, the ignorant me was unaware that such a port existed. Now that I have been there, I know that it is the gateway to the ancient city of Olympia. Fascinating!
Some interesting facts from A small Greek town, with a population that is just over 600, Katakolon overlooks the Ionian Sea and is located on a peninsula on the western IIia in Pyrgos.
Katakolon's glory days were in the end of the 19th to the mid 20th Century. The port was constructed to facilitate the transportation of goods to other major European ports.
Overall, it was a very good and enjoyable day in Greece.
I will provide links to more detailed videos later.
Patras- A beautiful Greek city.

Especially at archaeological sites, where there are many ruins, many tourists have difficulty imagining exactly how the site was in its original form. So to assist in the recognition of the site, one can present three-dimensional recreations of models, of temples, of various monuments as they were in antiquity, in addition to a recreation of life, the way of life of the ancients. This way with 'augmented reality', by walking in the archaeological site, one can relive moments from antiquity.

The device used by the user, and it is the one just behind me, is based on a portable computer, some special glasses and a camera. The image the computer receives from the camera is analysed by a special programme so it automatically recognises the object seen by the user, understands the perspective and angle from where it is being seen and automatically adapts some graphics, some special models that represent the ancient monuments so that these appear as if they exist in reality before the user's eyes.

This was a pilot programme that was tested in Olympia with visitors to the site and various schools and is something we're developing so that it can be released as a product. And in the future it can be used by a visitor in the same way he would use an audio guide in a museum.

There is the possibility, and it is something we're working on at the moment, for the user with his own device to automatically receive the content, the various graphics and audio content, and to follow the guided tour through his own device when he visits the archaeological site or museum. Of course, in that case we speak of a different technology than what we're discussing. We're talking about a PDA or a mobile phone which gives a different type of presentation but the same type of functionality to the user.
