Florida Keys Kayak Fishing - Lower Sugarloaf Channel Bridge
Florida Keys Kayak Fishing - Lower Sugarloaf Channel Bridge
Lower Sugarloaf Channel Bridge is a closed fishing bridge. No problem, I have a Wilderness Systems Tarpon 140 for just these situations. On my last video I showed the different steps it takes to prospect a new location and how to find a place to launch. Although we are in the midst of a Northern blow, I was able to pull a nice 15 Mangrove Snapper. I am sure when the weather settles and the fish fill back in, it will be a great spot, as well, nobody can fish it. I'll be back. With a block of chum. LOL.

Canoeing In The Florida Keys
Canoeing In The Florida Keys. On a recent trip to the Florida keys, we took our canoe along with us and attempted some ocean paddling. This is not one of our usual backcountry canoe trips, instead it's a look at some of the recreational canoeing opportunities we were able to enjoy while escaping the cold Canadian winter.

Key West Kayak Flats Fishing - An Evening On The Flats
Florida Keys Kayak Fishing - Spent an evening on the water fishing the flats just North East of Key West. Target species was Permit and secondly Bonefish. I want to get some good quality time in chasing the flats species before the fall/winter cold fronts chase them off.

Kayak Adventure, Key Largo, Florida
For the first time ever, Anchor Girl & rented a pair of kayaks and went out paddling for an hour or so while in Key Largo. Lots of fun and something we may be looking at getting for our boat. This was taken at the Hilton Key Largo Resort, with a good part of this video being captured in the private 'Buttonwood Bay' community.
Captured February, 2015.
Filmed with GoPro Hero 3 Silver, in suction cup mount.

This in depth look at the Florida Keys marine ecosystem includes an opportunity for backcountry snorkeling. Here you will swim over sponge beds and coral heads while among fish, rays and sharks. Limit of Snapper From a Kayak in The Florida Keys
Launched from Sombrero Beach and headed toward Sombrero reef (didn't get nearly that far). Netted some pilchards from the beach for fresh bait and caught my fill of nice Lane Snapper while successfully avoiding the summer squalls that seemed to be everywhere.

Florida Keys Wooden Boat Fishing, Me and my stuff:
My Boats:
The original single seater Kayak is a Great Auk designed by Nick Shade of Guillemot Kayaks and built by me with my own two hands. It’s 16 1/2 feet long (the design is 17 feet, but I scaled it to fit in the garage I built it in) and 24 inches wide. This was the first boat I ever built.
“Tiny” the double kayak is another Nick Shade design (Micro Bootlegger) and was also built by me. Videos of the later parts of the build are on my channel for your perusal (don’t forget to like and comment). It’s 18 feet long and 28 inches wide, for a stable and roomy ride, even with a bunch of fishing stuff riding along with me (or a second person).
When I add the outrigger (which is just one of the pontoons off my Catamaran) I can include the Suzuki 2.5HP outboard to make tracks.
My “Three Week Canoe” was, once again, built by yours truly, and you can see the entire build in my award winning video series “The Three Week Strip Canoe Build”. Available on a computer screen near you. The design is the classic “Puddle Duck” by Gil Gilpatrick.
Last but not least (just kidding, yes it is), is my experimental and highly controversial “Stand Up Paddle Pontoon Catamaran Mini Party Barge”. Built AND designed by me, with no help or consultation of any kind from anyone. Which may explain why it confuses the hell out of anyone who sees it. It looks like a toy, paddles like a toy (but a really cool toy) and, best of all, is just plain fun.
My Bike:
My bike is a Schwinn (don’t you just love saying that?) Meridian Trike, because nothing says secure in his masculinity like riding down the side of US1 on a tricycle (I’m thinking of starting a trike club, we’ll get heavy leather jackets and sweat a lot, how cool am I?). Mine is tricked out with an LED headlight for early morning rides, a gigantic basket to hold all of my stuff, and four custom made PVC rod holders held on with the best hose clamps money can buy.
Fishing Gear:
My gear is mostly whatever cheap stuff I find at yard sales or on clearance, but when I buy quality it’s usually the Penn Fierce II series of spinning rod and real combos. What I like best about this Penn line is the name. Seriously, who doesn’t want to be “Fierce” (they work pretty well too). I’m also a fan of Mustad hooks (when I’m not cheating out and buying generics).
Cameras:
I have two primary cameras and a back up. The primaries are a GoPro Hero4 Black that I chose because someone offered it to me in trade for an arcade game I was trying to get rid of, and a GoPro Hero Session 4 that was a fathers day gift, so I will worship and treasure it forever (or until it quits working, whichever comes first). My backup camera is an iPhone 7 because, well duh, its got a camera built right in.
I do all of my editing on my iMac desktop computer because I’m old enough that I don’t just do it all on a laptop and I use the free GoPro Studio editing software because I’m cheap and don’t want to have to learn to use something better.
That’s me and my stuff. See you on the water.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park Kayak FUN!
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is located in Key Largo, Florida and is a HUGE State Park with tons of things to visit for vacationers to visit. Ethan, Papa and Mom hopped on a Kayak and rode around in the mangrove passages. It's beautiful and fun and there is no electronics! WoOOHOOO!
Florida Keys kayak fishing April/May 2013
Clips filmed with my GoPro on the custom adjustable mount I made is from several weeks of kayak fishing from John Pennekamp-Islamorada -Curry Hammock-Marathon- Bahia Honda.
Tons of Tarpon around, the bones seemed almost nonexistent ( I've done a lot of bonefishing and know how and where to spot fish), the Redfishing near Pensacola was on fire, the spotted trout near Flamingo ( Everglades/10,000 islands) was very good and of course the barracuda, snapper, jacks and Ladyfish where plentiful
Great trip except for the absence of Bonefish
Cuba to Florida in a Kayak
Imagine spending 35 hours paddling in a Kayak in the open ocean waters. That's just what Davis Smith, Rawley Nielsen, Jordan Allred and Stephan Jacob accomplished.
Four Utah entrepreneurs who took adventure to a new extreme in the sport of kayaking. They took 124-mile, non-stop paddle trip from Havana, Cuba to Key West, Florida. They are the first ever kayakers to cross these waters in a non-stop trip.
Arms were tired, abs were tired, entire body was tired, Allred remembered.
The group arrived in Cuba on Sept. 5. The four men joined six more kayakers from other states to make the historic trip, but it wasn't just about kayaking.
It's a beautiful country, Smith said.
Smith, the trip's organizer, runs a new outdoor gear company in Draper called Cotopaxi that he said is also built on trying to help people. He thought Cuba was the perfect place to do that.
It was a way to build relations between our two countries. When we were in Cuba, the Cuban government received us with open arms, he said.
The men spent a week exploring and meeting with entrepreneurs.
It was fascinating to see the positivity and the hope that many of these entrepreneurs shared with us to really make a better future for themselves, Jacob shared.
I never met a group of people that were so loving, so accepting, Nielsen added.
The Cuban government even held a press conference.
One of the government officials told us when you are tired at night, when your body hurts, keep paddling for us, Smith said.
On Friday Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. they left Havana. That's when the vacation was over.
Forty hours seemed like an eternity on the water, Nielsen remembered.
Fiber glass kayaks are not the most comfortable ride. There is not a lot of room and you can't fully straighten your legs.
Just sitting in the same position in the kayak for that many hours, your knees, your feet really hurt, Smith said.
And that night a huge storm set in with six- foot swells. It was so dark no one could see each other.
In the chaos of the storm and being so close to the boat, our boat ended up bumping up next to the support boat and getting sucked underneath it, Smith explained.
The kayak was busted in half and sank to the bottom of the ocean.
It was very scary. It was terrifying, he said.
Fortunately, no one was hurt and the crew had brought a spare.
The next day, Sept. 12 at 10 p.m., they arrived exhausted, yet overwhelmed with joy. The men say they have a whole new appreciation for those Cubans who make the death-defying trip in a homemade raft while trying to get to America. They had two support boats, food, water and GPS and still it was an incredibly difficult task, especially in shark invested waters.
Paddling Mangrove Tunnels in The Florida Keys
Launched from Sombrero Beach here in Marathon, went down Sister's Creek and then paddled through the beautiful and quiet mangrove tunnels of the (mostly) undeveloped Boot Key.
