Paddlin Madeline - Final Landing at La Pointe -Day 26 The Movie.m4v
Welcome to a video of the grand finale - landing in La Pointe on beautiful Madeline Island one of Wisconsin's Apostle Islands. This was the final paddle stroke of a 26 day trip that began in St. Paul MN and followed an ancient Native American/Euro/Explorer/Fur Trade route that links the Great Lakes of North America to the Mississippi River. Follow the trip and preparation for it at coreymohan.com or Google, Paddlin' Madeline. Thanks for viewing Corey (filmed and edited by Dale)
Big Bay Town Park
Big Bay Town Park, Take the ferry to Madeline Island and experience what visitors have called “the best beach in northern Wisconsin” at Big Bay Town Park. This award-winning* 61-site campground and family park is one of the most impressive natural areas in not only the Apostle Islands, but the entire state of Wisconsin. Open year round, the park is owned and operated by the Town of La Pointe, and provides incredible views as well as public access to the spectacular Big Bay Lagoon. Just 7 miles from the ferry dock in La Pointe, find out why Big Bay Town Park is a top choice for camping, hiking, swimming, biking, kayaking/canoeing, picnicking, beach combing, bird watching, snowshoeing, or simply relaxing on the beautiful 2 ½ mile sandy beach.

'Big Bay - Best Lake View'
La Pointe Township's Big Bay Town Park on Madeline Island is located 3 miles north of Big Bay State Park. The two parks are joined by a 2.5 mile sand spit that separates Lake Superior from Big Bay Lagoon. The park and campground has recently undergone an extensive facility upgrade that in our opinion changed it from a middling C-minus campground to B plus. It now rivals Big Bay State Park as a great camping destination for families who love the outdoors but still want a few urban comforts.
It is located along Big Bay Road, the park is about 7 miles from the village of La Pointe Wisconsin where there is a general store, restaurants, ice cream parlors, gift shops, golfing, and other entertainments. Close enough to town for convenience yet far enough to offer isolation from the hustle and bustle.
Many campers bring bicycles to ride around the park, tour the island itself, or run into La Pointe for its entertainment. The swimming beach is near the mouth of Big Bay Lagoon and faces east so the morning sun helps warm the waters early in the day and the beach would still catch rays into mid-afternoon. In addition to swimming and biking, other park entertainment includes hiking trails, canoeing or kayaking, rock picking, beach combing, and fishing. Easy access to the spring fed Big Bay Lagoon adds variety and options for fishing, canoeing, and kayaking.
The campground has 61 campsites, including 22 RV sites with electric service. Several of the sites w/o electric service would accomodate RVs who don't need utilities. There are brand new washrooms and a shower facility and an attractive pavilion, for group gatherings and BBQs. It is connected to Big Bay State Park by the sand spit or barrier island via a boardwalk and hiking trail, it is an easy 2+ mile walk with rest benches sprinkled along the trail.
Sand Spit or Barrier Island Boardwalk

The narrow sand peninsula that separates Big Bay Lagoon from Big Bay of Lake Superior is a unique and tranquil environment. The sand beach stretches unobstructed for over 2 miles between the two parks.
Along the Boardwalk there are occasional access trails leading to the beach, some with benches to relax and contemplate or just enjoy the fresh air off the lake.

Back in Wisconsin checking out a few of our favorite spots!
While we're in Wisconsin, there are a couple of must-do's for us. One is Green Meadows farm ( as well as splashing around in the creek at Petrifying Springs Park.
We also got to celebrate Carson's birthday with friends and family which doesn't happen too often while being on the road.
And we finally had some time to do some updates to the trailer that we've been wanting to do for a while. Including new wall treatments and a cool solar system on the ceiling! Full video on all the updates coming soon!

Increasing Safety at Sea Caves
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore has become a world-class destination for sea kayaking, but some of the most popular attractions can also be treacherous. Under certain conditions, the sea caves can quickly change from awe-inspiring to terrifying. As waves roll into and reflect off of the cave walls, they can intensify and capsize even experienced kayakers. Once out of their boats, paddlers face the threat of hypothermia in water temperatures that hover in the mid-40s for most of the summer and rarely exceed 60 degrees. In addition, the surrounding steep cliffs make seeking safety on shore nearly impossible.
Conditions at Meyers Beach, where kayakers launch their boats, may seem easily manageable. However, after rounding a bend to approach the sea caves, paddlers can face significantly larger waves.
With support from the Wisconsin Coastal Management Program, Wisconsin Sea Grant Coastal Engineer Gene Clark teamed up with Chin Wu, a UW-Madison civil and environmental engineer, to find out if there was some way to measure the waves near the sea caves in real-time and transfer that information back to kayakers, outfitters, and park service staff.
Clark, Wu, and two graduate students tested some of the wave monitoring equipment in February 2009, when a thick layer of ice allowed foot travel from Meyers Beach to the sea caves. They also began working with the City of Bayfield, Inland Sea Society, local outfitters, Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and park staff to determine the best format for presenting the real-time data from the wave sensor so that its most useful for kayakers.
The system may take some time to develop fully, but initial testing suggests it will ultimately help kayakers make safe decisions about when to explore the caves.

Lyrics:
I close my eyes only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind
Now, don't hang on, nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky
It slips away, and all your money won't another minute buy
Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind (all we are is dust in the wind)
Dust in the wind (everything is dust in the wind), everything is dust in the wind (the wind)

Fishing Wisconsin's Black River
I have a detailed description of fishing this stream on my web site, CoppersmithStudios.com, in the Wis Warm Water section. Very good for smallmouth bass, northern pike, walleye, musky and channel catfish. Wading or canoeing, this is a great stream to fish. Music: Lemonweir River,
