Box Canyon Creek, Seward, AK
Trip Kinney & Paul Schauer on the first known descent of Box Canyon Creek in Seward, Alaska on 9/21/13. The creek is on the Seward side of the Lost Lake Trail. Box Canyon Creek has an average gradient of 462 feet per mile with the crux section dropping 300 feet in half a mile with a maximum gradient (between two contours) of 714 feet per mile. The creek is fairly easy to access, just a short hour and a half hike up the Seward side of the Lost Lake Trail and a 30 minute bushwhack down to the creek from the trail. We had low flows (estimated to be less than 100 cfs), but are looking forward to getting in there with a little more water.

An Unexpected Day in Seward, Alaska
How about a little US history? Seward is named after William H. Seward, President Lincoln's Secretary of State; responsible for negotiating the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. It is often known as Seward's Folly. Right! Bows of gratitude to Seward for his perseverance.
Seward is gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. A big cruise ship port. And has a gazillion activities for adventurers and fabulous wildlife viewing!

Miller's Landing Kayak Trip - 2014
There was no better way to see Resurrection Bay! We paddled from Miller's Landing 5 miles South of Caine's Head and enjoyed Tonsina Beach and Bridal Veil Falls along the way. At Caine's Head we set up camp and hiked up to Fort McGilvray was a United States military fortification located on Caines Head, a cliff 650 feet above Resurrection Bay south of Seward, Alaska. We had a fantastic guide, Shane, who was so personable and went above and beyond! He made some fantastic camping food and we even woke up to freshly picked berries in the morning. Crossing sea kayaking off the bucket list!!!!!!!!

Famagogo Kayaking Sea to Source to sea; Grewingk Glacier to Kachemak Bay, Alaska
Famagogo had an amazing adventure just across Kachemak Bay from Homer, Alaska. We rode a water taxi across the bay to a small trailhead off the beach. Then hiked two miles up and over a mountain pass with our kayaks. We then paddled across Grewingk Lake to the foot of the giant glacier that is part of the Harding Ice Field. Then it was six miles of Alaskan glacier fed whitewater back to the bay.
