FINDING OUTLAW JESSE JAMES MYTHS LEGENDS AND LIES J.SCHRECK
Jesse Woodson James was born on September 5, 1847 in Clay County, Missouri, near the site of present-day Kearney. This area of Missouri was largely settled by people from the Upper South, especially Kentucky and Tennessee, and became known as Little Dixie for this reason. James had two full siblings: his elder brother, Alexander Franklin Frank James, and a younger sister, Susan Lavenia James. His father, Robert S. James, farmed commercial hemp in Kentucky and was a Baptist minister before coming to Missouri. After he married, he migrated to Bradford, Missouri and helped found William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.[2] He held six slaves and more than 100 acres (0.40 km2) of farmland.
Robert traveled to California during the Gold Rush to minister to those searching for gold;[3] he died there when James was three years old.[4] After Robert's death, his widow Zerelda remarried twice, first to Benjamin Simms in 1852 and then in 1855 to Dr. Reuben Samuel, who moved into the James family home. Jesse's mother and Samuel had four children together: Sarah Louisa, John Thomas, Fannie Quantrell, and Archie Peyton Samuel.[3][5] Zerelda and Samuel acquired a total of seven slaves, who served mainly as farmhands in tobacco cultivation.[5][6]
Historical context
The approach of the American Civil War loomed large in the James–Samuel household. Missouri was a border state, sharing characteristics of both North and South, but 75% of the population was from the South or other border states.[3] Clay County in particular was strongly influenced by the Southern culture of its rural pioneer families. Farmers raised the same crops and livestock as in the areas from which they had migrated. They brought slaves with them and purchased more according to their needs. The county counted more slaveholders and more slaves than most other regions of the state; in Missouri as a whole, slaves accounted for only 10 percent of the population, but in Clay County they constituted 25 percent.[7] Aside from slavery, the culture of Little Dixie was Southern in other ways as well. This influenced how the population acted during and for a period of time after the war.
After the passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act in 1854, Clay County became the scene of great turmoil, as the question of whether slavery would be expanded into the neighboring Kansas Territory bred tension and hostility. Many people from Missouri migrated to Kansas to try to influence its future. Much of the dramatic build-up to the Civil War centered on the violence that erupted on the Kansas–Missouri border between pro- and anti-slavery militias.[6][8]
American Civil War
James as a young man
After a series of campaigns and battles between conventional armies in 1861, guerrilla warfare gripped Missouri, waged between secessionist bushwhackers and Union forces which largely consisted of local militias known as jayhawkers. A bitter conflict ensued, resulting in an escalating cycle of atrocities committed by both sides. Confederate guerrillas murdered civilian Unionists, executed prisoners, and scalped the dead. The Union presence enforced martial law with raids on homes, arrests of civilians, summary executions, and banishment of Confederate sympathizers from the state.[9]
The James–Samuel family sided with the Confederates at the outbreak of war.[10] Frank James joined a local company recruited for the secessionist Drew Lobbs Army, and fought at the Battle of Wilson's Creek in August 1861. He fell ill and returned home soon afterward. In 1863, he was identified as a member of a guerrilla squad that operated in Clay County. In May of that year, a Union militia company raided the James–Samuel farm looking for Frank's group. They tortured Reuben Samuel by briefly hanging him from a tree. According to legend, they lashed young Jesse.[3]

The Real McCoy: Harris-Kearney House holds artifacts of KC's founding father
Lindsey Foat — The Hale Center for Journalism
Today's Kansas Citians owe a lot to the clothesline. In February of 1835, John Calvin McCoy submitted the first map of Westport, which he measured out using his wife's clothesline.
McCoy is commonly thought of as the father of Westport and, by extension, Kansas City.
We are the keepers of history of Westport and early Kansas City, said Alana Smith, president of the Westport Historical Society, which is headquartered in the 1855 Harris-Kearney House Museum.
In 2008, the museum received a phone call from a woman offering an 1890 portrait of McCoy.
We thought it was a joke, Smith said. They felt it belonged in Westport. So it arrived, and it (has) hung on the mantle ever since.
Most recently, the museum acquired a Bible that McCoy gave to his daughter.
We are lucky enough that family descendants are still very conscious of the fact that he did develop this area, and they are sending articles that belonged to him, Smith said.
The Harris-Kearney house at 40th and Baltimore has been closed this winter for renovations but will reopen March 5.
This story is part of the KCPT series, Curator's Choice, where curators at area museums and galleries to share the stories behind their favorite items and pieces of art with us.

TRUE HISTORY FINDING THE OUTLAW FRANK JAMES MYTHS LEGENDS AND LIES J.SCHRECK
James was born Alexander Franklin James in Kearney, Missouri, to Baptist minister Reverend Robert Sallee James and his wife Zerelda (Cole) James, who had moved from Kentucky. He was the oldest of three children. His father died in 1851 and his mother remarried Benjamin Simms in 1852. After his death she married a third time to Dr. Reuben Samuel in 1855 when Frank was 13 years old. As a child, James showed interest in his late father's sizable library, especially the works of William Shakespeare. Census records show that James attended school regularly, and he reportedly wanted to become a teacher.
Civil War[edit]
Frank (right) and Jesse James in 1872
The American Civil War began in 1861, when James was eighteen years old. The secessionists in Missouri, including Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson, attempted to drive the Union army out of the state but were eventually defeated. The James family was from the heavily Confederate western portion of the state. On September 13, 1861, the Missouri State Guard, including private Frank James, besieged Lexington, Missouri. James fell ill and was left behind when the Confederate forces retreated. He surrendered to the Union troops, was paroled, and was allowed to return home. On his arrival, however, he was arrested by the local pro-Union militia and was forced to sign an oath of allegiance to the Union.
After the withdrawal of regular Confederate troops in the fall of 1861, a bitter guerrilla conflict soon began between bands of pro-Confederate irregulars (commonly known as bushwhackers) and the Union homeguards. By early 1863, Frank, ignoring his parole and oath of allegiance, had joined the guerrilla band of Fernando Scott, a former saddler. He soon switched to the more active command led by William Clarke Quantrill.
Union militiamen searching for Fernando Scott raided the Samuel farm and hanged Dr. Reuben Samuel (though not fatally), Frank's stepfather, torturing him to reveal the location of the guerrillas. Shortly afterward, Frank took part with Quantrill's company in the August 21, 1863 Lawrence Massacre where approximately 200 mostly unarmed civilians were killed.
Frank James was paroled July 27, 1865 in Nelson County, Kentucky.[3] There is a report that after his parole, Frank was involved in a gunfight in Brandenburg, Kentucky with four soldiers that resulted in two soldiers killed, one wounded, and Frank wounded in the hip.[3] However, there is an alternative account that claims in the autumn of 1865, Frank, who was in Kentucky going to Missouri, was suspected of stealing horses in Ohio and that Frank shot two members of a posse and escaped.[4]
Outlaw/criminal years and retirement[edit]
For the career of the James brothers after the Civil War, see Jesse James.
During his years as a bandit, James was involved in at least four robberies between 1868 and 1876 that resulted in the deaths of bank employees or citizens. The most famous incident was the disastrous Northfield, Minnesota, raid on September 7, 1876, that ended with the death or capture of most of the gang.
Five months after the killing of his brother Jesse in 1882, Frank James boarded a train to Jefferson City, Missouri, where he had an appointment with the governor in the state capitol. Placing his holster in Governor Crittenden's hands, he explained,
I have been hunted for twenty-one years, have literally lived in the saddle, have never known a day of perfect peace. It was one long, anxious, inexorable, eternal vigil.' He then ended his statement by saying, 'Governor, I haven't let another man touch my gun since 1861.
Accounts say that James surrendered with the understanding that he would not be extradited to Northfield, Minnesota.[5EDGE PSYCHOTIC/ MYTHS LEGENDS AND LIES is a unsolved network searching for age old questions of the life we live. Kansas Trains Movie
The railroads covered in this movie are Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific, and Amtrak. Locations of each train are provided in the movie. Multiple trains in the same city will be together with the first clip displaying the name of the city. All trains were shot in Kansas.
This is my first attempt at a hour long train movie. It has taken me a little over a year to compile all of these videos into one. Railfanning is one of my favorite hobbies so I decided to set out and try and make a movie with a bunch of trains. I am well pleased the way this movie has turned out. I hope you enjoy this movie as much as I did putting it together.
** Disclaimer*** I was unable to compile and maintain the train info for each train. Therefor train info was not provided.
