Taipei is the national capital of Taiwan. It is in the northern part of the island in a basin between the Yangming Mountains and the Central Mountains. It is, with 2.6 million inhabitants, the fourth largest administrative area of Taiwan, after New Taipei, Kaohsiung and Taichung. However, the Greater Taipei metropolitan area, which encompasses the central Taipei City along with the surrounding New Taipei City and Keelung, represents the largest urban cluster in Taiwan with nearly 7 million people.
Taipei City administers twelve districts :
Wanhua (萬華區)
Wanhua is the oldest district of Taipei, home to many historic buildings, such as the Longshan Temple and the Red House Theater. Ximending is the harajuku of Taipei, a shopping neighbourhood centred around teenager fashion, Japanese culture and subcultures.
Datong (大同區)
Datong is one of the oldest inhabited areas in what is now Taipei. It used to be the city's commercial centre, but has lost relevance as the economic centre shifted southeast to Zhongzheng, Daan and Xinyi. It is now most known for Dihua Street with its Japanese colonial and Qing dynasty architecture and Chinese herbal and dry goods shops.
Zhongzheng (中正區)
The political center of Taiwan and the location of the Presidential Office and important government ministries. Its prime tourist attractions is the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall.
Zhongshan (中山區)
Zhongshan has riverside parks, the Martyrs Shrine, the Fine Arts Museum.
Daan (大安區)
Daan is a modern commercial district. The northern part of Daan is known as Taipei's East District, offering department stores, plenty of fashion boutiques, lounge bars, and atmospheric restaurants and some of the most expensive real estate in the city. The southern part of Daan is home to National Taiwan University and National Taiwan Normal University.
Xinyi (信義區)
Xinyi is the modern financial district of Taipei and home to the Taipei 101, the World Trade Center and the International Convention Center. It is the newest part of the city with many shopping malls.
Songshan (松山區)
Many firms and financial institutions in this neighbourhood, which is directly north of the East District. Raohe Street Night Market is one of the oldest of Taipei's famous street markets.
Beitou (北投區)
This district is famous for hot springs and the Yangmingshan National Park.
Shilin (士林區)
A traditional area of the city that is known for its excellent museums, including the world famous National Palace Museum. Shilin is also home to one of Taipei's largest nightmarket and the expat enclave of Tianmu.
Neihu (內湖區)
Located in the north-east of the city, Neihu is a hub of IT industry in Taipei, home to many large shopping centers, and a great place for hiking and 'templing'. A mouth-watering juxtaposition of local Taiwanese culture and modern shopping malls and restraunts. A definite must-visit, Neihu is largely a secret to the tourist world, unfortunately.
Nangang (南港區)
Neighboring Neihu, this district is known for its IT industrial complexes and is also home to one of Taiwan's leading academic institution - Academia Sinica.
Wenshan (文山區)
This district comprises the two traditional districts of Muzha and Jingmei. It is in the south of the city and associated with its many tea plantations and also for being the location of Taipei Zoo.

Change of schedule for more than 400 trains
Taiwan Railways implemented a new schedule today, affecting more than 400 trains. Over half saw a schedule change in excess of five minutes. The railway also expanded Puyuma express train service to Hualien and Taitung, though many commuters continue to complain that these tickets are hard to acquire. Taiwan Railways' schedule change left many people confused about departure times. Passengers had little choice but to ask station staff for help purchasing tickets, as they were afraid of missing their train. Beginning on Wednesday, Taiwan Railways changed departure and arrival times on east and west coast lines, affecting over 400 trains.Fortunately, there weren't any delays on the first day of the new train schedule.The Puyuma express train now services Taitung, with a total of 12 different trains on weekdays and 18 over the weekend. However, many still believe tickets for the express train are difficult to purchase.The express may be easy for tour groups to purchase. But for individuals, I don't think there will be many benefits even if they add extra trains. Peng Kun-yenTRA Transportation Services DivisionAt first, many people worried they couldn't reserve a ticket, so they would have several people reserve seats when in fact they only needed one. Tickets that are returned or not collected will be automatically released by the system. Taiwan Railways also restarted service on the Shenao line today. It is integrated with the Pingxi line, allowing direct access from Pingxi and Jingtong to the Keelung National Museum of Marine Science and Technology.

The National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall (Chinese: 國立國父紀念館; pinyin: Guólì Guófù Jìniàn Guǎn; literally: National 'Father of the Nation' Memorial Hall) is located in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. It is a memorial to the Republic of China's National Father, Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and was completed in 1972. The total building area covers 29,464 square metres (7.3 acres) in an open space of 115,000 square metres (28.4 acres). It contains displays of Sun's life and the revolution he led, and is also a multi-purpose social, educational and cultural center for the public.

But they are also crowded and can be noisy and dirty, leading to many complaints from local residents. Tonight we look at three night markets in Taipei and see how the city government's efforts to clean them up have threatened their very existence. This is from the 1970s. Taipei City is the capital of Taiwan. Situated at the northern tip of Taiwan, Taipei is located on the Tamsui River; it is about 25 km (16 mi) southwest of Keelung, a port city on the Pacific Ocean. The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a famous monument, landmark and tourist attraction that was erected in memory of General Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. The structure stands at the east end of Memorial Hall Square, site of the National Concert Hall and National Theater and their adjacent parks as well as the memorial. The landmarks of Liberty Square stand within sight of Taiwan's Presidential Building in Taipei's Zhong zheng District.
The National Palace Museum is a vast art gallery and museum built around a permanent collection centered on ancient Chinese artifacts. It should not be confused with the Palace Museum in Beijing (which it is named after); both institutions trace their origins to the same institution. The collections were divided in the 1940s as a result of the Chinese Civil War. The National Palace Museum in Taipei now boasts a truly international collection while housing one of the world's largest collections of artifacts from ancient China.
Taipei 101 is a 101-floor landmark skyscraper that claimed the title of world's tallest building when it opened in 2004, a title it held for six years before relinquishing it to the Burj Kalifa in Dubai. Designed by C.Y. Lee & Partners and constructed by KTRT Joint Venture, Taipei 101 measures 509 m (1,670 ft) from ground to top, making it the first skyscraper in the world to break the half-kilometer mark in height. Built to withstand typhoon winds and earthquake tremors, its design incorporates many engineering innovations and has won numerous international awards. Taipei 101 remains one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and holds LEEDS certification as the world's largest green building. Its shopping mall and its indoor and outdoor observatories draw visitors from all over the world. Taipei 101's New Year's Eve fireworks display is a regular feature of international broadcasts.
Ximending has been a famous area for shopping and entertainment since the 1930s. Historic structures include a concert hall, a historic cinema, and the Red House Theater. Modern structures house karaoke businesses, art film cinemas, wide-release movie cinemas, electronic stores, and a wide variety of restaurants and fashion clothing stores.
The newly developed Xinyi District is popular with tourists and locals alike for its many entertainment and shopping venues, as well as being the home of Taipei 101, a prime tourist attraction. Malls in the area include the sprawling Shin Kong Mitsukoshi complex, Taipei 101 mall, Eslite Bookstore's flagship store (which includes a boutique mall), The Living Mall, ATT shopping mall, and the Vieshow Cinemas (formerly known as Warner Village). The Xinyi district also serves as the center of Taipei's active nightlife, with several popular nightclubs concentrated in a relatively small area around the Neo19 and Taipei 101 buildings.
Taipei's public transport system, the Taipei Metro (commonly referred to as the MRT), incorporates a metro and light rail system based on advanced VAL and Bombardier technology. In addition to the rapid transit system itself, the Taipei Metro also includes several public facilities such as the Maokong Gondola, underground shopping malls, parks, and public squares. Modifications to existing railway lines to integrate them into the metro system are underway, as well as a rapid transit line to connect the city with Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport and Taoyuan County.

The National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (Chinese: 國立中正紀念堂) is a famous national monument, landmark and tourist attraction erected in memory of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, former President of the Republic of China. It is located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan.
The monument, surrounded by a park, stands at the east end of Memorial Hall Square. It is flanked on the north and south by the National Theater and National Concert Hall.
The Memorial Hall is white with four sides. Walking Around the Taipei Expo Park + Taipei Storey House (Taipei, Taiwan)
The Taipei Expo Park / 花博公園 is a multifunctional park in Zhongshan District converted from the 2010 Taipei International Flora Expo. The park comprises three typical park areas (Yuanshan, Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Xinsheng) while offering venues for the hosting of various events in the former Flora Expo’s pavilions. Among the iconic Flora Expo displays, still available, on the parks’ premises, mostly featuring perennial flowering/foliage plants and turfs, are the 3-dimensional Green Walls, Flower Walls, “Flora Rainbows”, Special Exhibition Area, Flower Landscape, Rare Flowers & Plants Area, and Fruit Tree Area.
The Taipei Story House / 台北故事館, formerly known as the Yuanshan Mansion (圓山別莊), is a historic house in the Zhongshan District, Taipei, Taiwan. It is now open as a museum in Taipei Expo Park.
The house was built in 1913–14 during Japanese rule by Tan Tiau-chun (陳朝駿), a Daitōtei tea merchant. It was originally a guest house for rich merchants, and other important local people.
The ground floor was built using brick and the upper floors of wood with English Tudor-style beams. The staircase is constructed to look like a pagoda. The entrance portico is in the classical style with Ionic columns.
The Story House museum now has exhibits related to tea and local history. It is located immediately adjacent to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and close to Yuanshan Station.

Xiangshan, also known as Elephant Mountain or Mount Elephant, is a mountain in Xinyi District, Taipei, Taiwan. It is close to the Taipei Metro Xiangshan Station. Shifen old street is located in the Pingxi area (平溪), Shifen Old Streets is a collection of lanes and alleys in and around the Shifen railway station area. Originally built for transporting coal during the Japanese era, the station and track runs straight through the village. Events such as the Sky Lantern Festival draw visitors year round to the Pingxi area to create a Chinese Lantern (天燈) with a wish written on it to set into the sky. Our experience was really fulfilling. (google)
From Ximen MRT Station to Elephant Mountain.
1. Board at Ximen MRT station green line and get off at Xiangshan station.
2. After arriving at Xiangshan station, the terminus of Red Line 2, leave from Exit 2 and continue walking alongside the edge of the park. At the end of this road, take a left and follow until the entrance for Xiangshan Hiking Trail, total 650 metres, around 20 mins.
FromXimen MRT Station to Shifen Old Street.
1. Board the MRT from Ximen and get off at Muzha Station.
2. Wait for a Muzha Pingxi Shuttle bus #795 and get off at shifen old street.(vice-versa)

Power Shortage Fears Eased
Temperatures around Taiwan soared to a high of 37.9 degrees today, and they''re set to stay this coming week. Fears about a power shortage were eased today after Taipower said it had repaired a broken furnace in a coal-fired power plant in Taichung that had earlier caused a generator to malfunction. Taipower now says there will be no power supply problems in the coming week.

What to do in Taipei - On Day 2 of our Taipei trip, we went to Jiufen, a mountain town in northeastern Taiwan, east of Taipei. This place is packed with street food shacks, souvenir shops and tea houses. We easily spent up to few hours there.
It is recommended that you wear comfy walking shoes as it is known for its narrow alleyways. Highly recommend this place and it is definitely one of the Must Go places in Taiwan.
After Jiufen, we stopped by the Shrimp Fishing place. Had our lunch there before we headed back for more shopping!
