Under the Dutch empire, however, there were new gifts of land and under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha the temple was rebuilt. It was refurbished in the first half of the 20th century with the help of Helena Wijewardana.

The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara or Kelaniya Temple is a Buddhist temple in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, seven miles from Colombo. The Chief Incumbent is Venerable Professor Kollupitiye Mahinda Sangharakkhitha Thera.
Buddhists believe the temple to have been hallowed during the third and final visit of the Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka, eight years after gaining enlightenment. Its history would thus go back to before 500 BCE. The Mahawansa records that the original Stupa at Kelaniya enshrined a gem-studded throne on which the Buddha sat and preached. The temple flourished during the Kotte era but much of its land was confiscated during the Portuguese empire. Under the Dutch empire, however, there were new gifts of land and under the patronage of King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha the temple was rebuilt. It was refurbished in the first half of the 20th century with the help of Helena Wijewardana.
The temple is also famous for its image of the reclining Gautama Buddha and paintings by the native artist Solias Mendis which depict important events in the life of the Buddha, in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, also incidents from the Jataka tales. It is the venue for the Duruthu Maha Perehera procession each January. An 18-foot stone statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara has been erected at the temple.

Kelaniya Temple built on the banks of the Kelaniya River is one of the most sacred sites of Sri Lanka.
It is believed Buddha together with 500 Arahats (Supremely enlightened beings) visited Kelaniya on the Wesek day of the Buddhist Era 2531 and expounding of the Dhamma, the Buddhist doctrine to the inhabitants of the island.
Buddha’s timely visit to the island resulted in quelling an imminent war between two kings named Chulodara and Mahodara over a jewel–encrusted throne. Buddha having preached the doctrine on the disputed throne offered to him ensued lasting peace between the two kings.
The great stupa built upon the site enshrining the throne was since then called Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara.

ngôi đền Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara, cách thành phố colombo khoảng 10km được xây dựng từ Thế kỷ 03 TCN. Đây là nơi được truyền tụng như là thành phố cuối cùng trong ba nơi chốn đã vinh hạnh được in dấu chân của đức Phật đến giảng Phật pháp - 9 năm. Ngày nay, nơi Phật tọa được đặt một bệ thờ chạm khắc rực rỡ và trong khuôn viên ngôi đền Kela-niya được xây dựng thêm nhiều tháp với những bức tranh sống động, minh họa cuộc đời tu hành của đức Phật.
Căn cứ vào 2 bộ sử liệu quan trọng của Sri Lanka là Mahāvamsa (Đại sử) và Dipavamsa (Đảo sử): trước khi Phật giáo được truyền bá chính thức đến Sri Lanka bởi ngài Mahinda - con trai vua Asoka (A-dục) thì Đức Phật đã đến Sri Lanka tổng cộng ba lần :
Lần thứ ba, Đức Phật đến theo lời mời của vua Rồng Mania-kkhika đến Kelaniya vào năm khoảng 519/520 B.C cùng với 500 vị đệ tử của Ngài. Trong lần viếng thứ ba này, Đức Phật đã in bàn chân trái của Ngài lên trên đỉnh núi Sumana-kuta (nay là Samana-lakanda) theo lời thỉnh nguyện của thái tử Rồng tên Sumana-saman. Đỉnh Sumana-kuta sau thời thuộc địa đổi tên thành Adam’s Peak.

Marking the beginning of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist Calendar, the Duruthu Perahera is one of the most culturally glorious processions celebrated by devotees annually during the month of January (Duruthu). The main festivities are organized at the historic Kelaniya Rajamaha Viharaya (Temple) annually during the pre-full moon poya day in January to mark the first visit of Lord Buddha to Sri Lanka. Dating back to the year 1927, this grand assemblage is witnessed and celebrated by devotees who arrive in Kelaniya from all parts of the country not failing to attract tourists who are left in awe with the festivities carried out during this auspicious time period. The traditions and culture of the grand heritage of Sri Lanka is depicted throughout the procession which is considered the highlight of many rituals and ceremonies preceding the event. The entire festival consists of three stages while it commences with a series of religious sermons held each night which leads up to the festivities.That is followed by a week of Pirith Ceremonies and finally ending all celebratory proceedings with the Perahera which is held during three consecutive nights.
The “Udamaluwa Perahera” which is the first day procession is held in the upper terrace area of the Kelaniya Temple. Here the Dathu Perahera is conducted in a small scale with only a few elephants, whip crackers, fire dancers, flag bearers, dancers and drummers. The “Pahatha Maluwa Perahera” which is the second day procession is more colourful and elaborate than the first with the Dathu Perahera leading and the three Devala Peraheras trailing behind. The “Randholi Perahera” which is the third and final procession of the Duruthu Maha Perahera is a magnificent spectacle of colour, tradition, grandeur and religious fervour. Many of the devotees who gather in the temple premises join in the celebrations by chanting on the roadsides.
The Perahera is headed by whip-crackers who herald the approach of the procession. Then comes the fire-ball performers, followed by a large number of elephants and tuskers carrying the sacred relic casket and dressed in shiny attire, flag bearers, drummers, dancers, Buddhist monks, chief incumbents of the temple, attendants and village folk who have strived to make the festivities a success. The entire length of the procession is illuminated by torches and decorated with colourful banners and flags that displays religious insignia relevant to each temple and devalas which are associated with the Duruthu Perahera. The procession returns to the temple, after travelling the entire length of the marked route while a cannon booms to indicate the closing ceremony of this grand pageant.
The Kelaniya Temple carries many legends around it and it is also a resplendent representation of Buddhist architecture and art of ancient Sri Lanka that attracts many tourists local and foreign on a regular basis. The first entrance consists of the “Makara Thorana” (a mythological creature carved in to an archway) which is a symbol of protection. The carved “Makara” is an interesting combination of many creatures which has to be witnessed with ones own eyes. A main shrine area, dagoba, moonstone, the reclining Buddha statue, the sacred Bo tree and many more statues of the Lord Buddha in various positions are found within the premises of the temple. Due the location of the Kelaniya Temple adjoining the “Kelaniya River” and its close proximity to Colombo, visitors are drawn to explore this magnificent structure with its carvings, frescos, statues and grandeur of a proud heritage.

Buddha soll neun Monate nach seiner Erleuchtung einer Einladung nach Kelaniya gefolgt sein und wesentlich zur Einführung des Buddhismus in Sri Lanka beigetragen haben. Für die Geschichte des Landes hat der Ort deshalb eine große Bedeutung. Hauptanziehungspunkt für die zahlreichen Pilger ist der Baum der Erkenntnis. Unter solch einer Pappelfeige fand Gautama Buddha seine Erleuchtung. Seitdem gilt er den Buddhisten als heilig und wird in jedem Tempel angepflanzt. Zahlreiche Legenden berichten, wie die Ableger des Baumes aus Nordindien auf abenteuerliche Weise nach Sri Lanka gelangten.
