Some of the highlights from Kelly Hendry's School 2017 North East Qualifiers.

Jowonder Discusses Painting and the Meaning of Enchantment.

Making smaller works in 2019, gave me a chance to zoom in. I had already been looking at videos of tiny insects slowed down, which made me realise that the process of looking at something small could capture my attention in new and subtle ways.
I want my paintings to reveal an enchanted world, so I distort colour and scale to create the effect of an alternative vision. Some of the characters are seen confronting huge giants such as in Blue Giant and Uther Pendragon, these confrontations are as much about a character’s inner demons as their more obvious challenges of survival in the face of a beast. Other characters are lost and found, on a path, sailing in an enormous teapot, or experiencing a resurrection such as the Butterfly Unicorns.
