We enjoyed our fantastic Railtours Ireland three day adventure from Dublin. A special thank you to Norman our attentive, funny and informative guide who showed us the Irish countryside in style. The food, the travel, the accommodations and the tours were all top quality and it was the highlight of our trip to Ireland.
After arriving in Cork, Ireland’s third largest city, on Irish Rail, which included a fabulous full Irish breakfast, we went on by bus to visit the Blarney Castle and Gardens with the famous Blarney Stone.
Blarney Castle and Gardens
Blarney Castle was built in 1446. Kiss the famous stone for the gift of eloquence.
The Blarney Gardens include the Poison Garden, Fern Garden, Herbaceous Border, Woodlands, Bog Garden and Himalayan Walk.
Next stop was Cobh where the R.M.S. Titanic made its last port of call.
The Cobh Heritage Center exhibits the Queenstown Story which tells the story of the Irish Emigration and Famine, the Titanic, the Lusitania Exhibition and the naval and military history of the area. Cobh was known from 1849 until 1920 as Queenstown.
Annie Moore was the first Irish person to register as an immigrant at Ellis Island.

Our hotel accommodations were at The International Hotel in Killarney which is a four star family owned hotel with historical charm and modern day conveniences.
The next day we drove along the Ring of Kerry. The natural pristine countryside with sheep grazing on gently rolling hills of green draws tourists to the area. You can stop at one of the picturesque villages such as Waterville and Sneem along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way.

The last day we enjoyed seeing Bunratty Castle and the Cliffs of Moher
Bunratty Castle completed in 1425. There are fantastic views at the top once you climb the spiral staircases in this medieval castle.
Lunch at O’Connor’s Pub in Doolin which is a coastal village in Country Clare.
Cliff of Moher, among the highest sea cliffs in Western Europe. This is Ireland’s second most popular tourist destination.
The Burren
We drove the coast road along The Burren toward Galway. The Burren is a national park meaning “rocky place”.

The sinking of the the Cunard Liner the Lusitania on May 7th 1915 resulted in the deaths of 1,198 of the 1,959 people aboard. It was torpedoed off the Old Head of Kinsale County Cork, by the Germans during World War I.
Many of the victims were brought to Cobh and many are interred in the Old Church Graveyard near Cobh town. The monument, which is in Casement Square in the town centre, designed by Jerome O'Connor commemorates those who died in the tragedy. It depicts two fisherman who went to the rescue of the ill fated liner. Over them is the Angel of Peace.
The event turned public opinion in many countries against Germany, contributed to the American entry into World War I and became an iconic symbol in military recruiting campaigns of why the war was being fought.

Book of Kells ~ Part 1 Documentary
Around the year 750, Irish monks laboring in isolation on a tiny island of Iona off Scotland's west coast-
began work on a book that would outlast empires, a book that many say may be the greatest illustrated version of the Gospels ever made. Well, it wasn't quite a book really. It was a codex--the first step up from a scroll and toward a modern bound and printed book. Codex salesmen were quick to tout the advantages: you can open a codex to any page (try that with a scroll), you can write on both sides of the parchment or (in the deluxe model) vellum, and you can bind together long works. For more than a century, the small monastic community on the tiny island had been laboring faithfully to copy and preserve classical and biblical texts that few in Europe even knew existed. It wasn't an easy life. The monks lived and worked in beehive-like stone structures with few creature comforts. But their art has been called the work of angels. The Book of Kells was to be their masterwork: the four Gospels of the Christian faith laid lovingly onto the page in Latin and brought to life by the best and most colorful art of the age. For the monks who labored over every figure, it wasn't simply a book. It was the Word of God made manifest, and a devout and passionate prayer offered to the Word's source.
The Book of Kells features a Latin version of the Four Gospels and highly ornate drawings of the Apostles and other Biblical figures that resemble stained-glass window images. The book was completed circa 800 A.D Portions of the 600-page text remain on display in Dublin's Trinity Library. As pages of the text and drawings are shared with viewers on camera, the narrator explains why so many experts believe The Book of Kells is an incredibly rare and valuable work of Irish art.

Kells (from Irish Na Cealla, meaning the monastic cells/churches) is a village near Ballymena in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, that also encompasses the neighbouring village of Connor (from Irish Coinnire, meaning (wild-)dog oak-wood) (Ulster-Scots: Connyer). As such it is also known as Kells and Connor in which they share a primary school, library, development association etc. It is in Mid and East Antrim District Council. Perhaps the most precious book in the Trinity Library is the 1200 year old Book of Kells. The book itself is a copy of the four gospels in Latin written by Irish monks on the island of Iona.

Ses débuts remontent au VIe siècle. Une église a d'abord été construite. Par la suite, au fil des siècles, plusieurs autres bâtiments ont été érigés autour de l'église et ont ainsi formé un petit village qui deviendra un important centre universitaire et religieux jusqu'au XIIe siècle.
Le monastère avait une si grande renommée que de nombreux rois ont décidé d'être enterrés sur ce site.
Dès notre arrivée, on peut d'ores et déjà avoir un excellent aperçu de la splendeur que devait avoir ce centre à cette époque aussi lointaine.
De plus, le monastère a été érigé au bord de la rivière Shannon, ce qui ajoute au charme de l'endroit.
Le site comprend une cathédrale, plusieurs églises, deux tours rondes, trois hautes croix celtiques ainsi que plusieurs autres éléments.
Il y a également un petit musée dans le centre des visiteurs. A ne pas manquer. On y présente entre autres un petit film qui raconte l'histoire du site.
