Kencho-ji Temple, Kita Kamakura ●
► Kencho-ji is a Rinzai Zen Temple located in Kita Kamakura, Kanagawa.
It was founded in 1253, making it the oldest existing Zen monastery in Japan.
This video will take you through the two maingates first, followed by the Butsuden, Buddha Hall and the Hatto, Dharma Hall that features a great dragon-painting on the ceiling. All major public ceremonies are performed in this building.
Finally, the video will show the Hojo mainbuilding that now serves as a simple prayer and meditation room. This is perhaps the least interesting building in terms of looks and architecture. The best thing about it, is probably the terrace on the backside, facing a small garden.
Kencho-ji is the first ranked of zen temples in East Japan, and it's easy to see why.
If you plan on visiting only one temple on your visit to Tokyo, this should be it! - Enjoy!

KAMAKURA - Kencho-ji Zen temple
Kenchō-ji is a Rinzai Zen temple in Kamakura which ranks first among Kamakura's so-called Five Great Zen Temples (the Kamakura Gozan) and is the oldest Zen training monastery in Japan. These temples were at the top of the Five Mountain System, a network of Zen temples started by the Hōjō Regents.
The temple was constructed on the orders of Emperor Go-Fukakusa and completed in 1253, fifth year of the Kenchō era, from which it takes its name.[ It was founded by Rankei Doryū, a Chinese Zen master who moved to Japan in 1246, spending some years in Kyushu and Kyoto before coming to Kamakura.

☆Bits of knowledge〜Kencho-ji〜
Kenchoji (建長寺, Kenchōji) is the number one of Kamakura's five great Zen temples. The oldest Zen temple in Kamakura, Kenchoji was founded by the ruling regent Hojo Tokiyori in 1253 during the Kencho Era after which it was named. Its first head priest was Rankei Doryu, a Zen priest from China.
Although considerably smaller than during its heydays, Kenchoji still consists of a large number of temple buildings and subtemples, and stretches from the entrance gate at the bottom of the valley far into the forested hills behind. After passing through the Sanmon main gate, visitors will see Kenchoji's temple bell (Bonsho), designated a national treasure, on their right.

Kencho-ji Temple. Kamakura. Japan

Kamakura (Japan) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kamakura in Japan.
South of Tokyo, on the island Honshu, is the seaport of Kamakura, Japan’s ancient seat of government and is where Shogun Yoritomo, of the Minamoto Clan, left the courtly life of Kyoto in 1192 and built numerous temples and shrines. The Tokei Ji Temple was where women lived as nuns following the death of their husband. The teaching of Zen, imported from China, filled large areas of both cultural and social life. A bridge over a pond leads to the Jochi-Ji Temple that was built within a cypress forest and is one of the five famous temples of Kamakura. Founded in 1282, the Engaku-Ji Monastery teaches the priesthood right up to the present day. Its buildings are typical of Zen design, such as the abbot's residence, sub-temples and tea houses. Within the main hall, Hokan Shaka Nyorai is worshipped. In Japan, the historic Buddha is either seated, standing or prone. Kencho-Ji is the most important of the five Zen monasteries of Kamakura and has been conserved in its original form and function. The second oldest bell in the city, cast in 1255, is one of the temple’s treasures. The buildings are located within a narrow valley, surrounded by wooded slopes where the silence of Zen is palpable. The decline of the region’s rulers was accompanied by violent struggles during which the city was largely destroyed and subsequently returned to being a fishing village.
