Kengun Shrine 健軍神社 the oldest traditional shrine in Kumamoto City
Kengun Shrine is the oldest traditional shrine in Kumamoto City
History[edit] LegendAccording to a legend, Emperor Keiko ordered 健緒組命(Takeogumino-mikoto)to conquor enemies who were around Mt. Choraina or Chorainasan (at Mashiki ?). He succeeded and was enshrined. (Local kami or shrine called ubugamisama might be there)
According to an old document, this shrine was built in the 19th year of Emperor Kimmei (欽明天皇, Kinmei-tenno, 509-571), the 29th emperor of Japan. A governor of Higo Province , now Kumamoto, Kumamoto was on his way to Aso Shrine to pray for his country, but heavy snow prevented him from going to Aso. A boy, about 3-years of age, appeared to him and said, Your faith in Aso God is very deep, and you are going to Aso in spite of heavy snow. You should build a shrine here, since Aso Shrine was busy with the defense of the emperor who is east, while you must defend this place against enemies west, so the name should be Kengun.
13 kami are enshrinedThe main kami is Kengun Ohkami(Take-ogumino-mikoto), who was a related kami of Aso Shrine. The name of kami is 健緒組命 and 健 is also called Ken. Other kami are 健磐龍命,阿蘇都比賣命 and others. They came by Bunrei from Aso Shrine.
Satsuma RebellionOn February 22, 1877, 1400 Samurais decided to side with the Satsuma Rebellion force in the Kengun Shrine area and formed a Kumamoto Company and they started to fight against the Kumamoto Castle. At the Satsuma Rebellion, the kami of burnt Katō Shrine and kami of burnt Fujisaki-hachimangu were transiently relocated at the Kengun Shrine.

*I apologise for an errors present in this video. For some reason the video files had become corrupted after I had cut and pasted them on my computer.*
I have lived in Kumamoto City for more than a year now but this was the first time I went to Hanaoka Mountain. I actually live quite close as I can see it from my apartment. Originally I had thought on top of the mountain was a temple and/or shrine but in fact there is a Stupa on top which contains the holy remains of Buddha. The remains were donated to Kumamoto by the former Prime Minister of India Nehru as a prayer for world peace.

When I get a chance I will make a video of Kamitori Arcade however it is not as long as the Shimotori Arcade but there are more clothes shops in this area.

The Kureko Dance
Remnants of the Heike forces who settled here remembered their lost capital of Kyoto with the kureko dance, passed down for nearly a thousand years and now a government-designated 'Significant Intangible Folk Cultural Asset'. Participants wear a conical hat, with their faces hidden by the long black tail feathers of the 'kureko fowl', a rare type
of chicken originating in this area, and the dance tells of the sorrow of their ancestors
at being driven into exile. This elegant dance testifies to the dignity and strength
of people who, though fallen in the world, never lost their hope to survive.

阿蘇神社で尺八奉納演奏 Shakuhachi at Aso Shrine.Dedication performance.
The shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown flute. It was originally introduced from China into Japan in the 8th century and underwent a resurgence in the early Edo Period. The shakuhachi is traditionally made of bamboo, but versions now exist in ABS and hardwoods. It was used by the monks of the Fuke school of Zen Buddhism in the practice of suizen (blowing meditation). The instrument is tuned to the minor pentatonic scale.
Aso Shrine at Mount Aso in Kyushu is traditionally held to have been a center of worship before the accession of Emperor Jinmu. The shikinaisha shrine complex at Ichinomiya in what is today Kumamoto prefecture was said to have been established in 281.
Records link the founding of the shrine to the reign of Emperor Keiko. By the middle of the 11th century, the shrine was involved in national issues as they played out across Kyushu. During the ascendancy of the Kamakura shogunate, the Houjo clan exercised a significant influence over the affairs of Aso Shrine.
This Shinto shrine is dedicated to the veneration of Tateiwatatsu-no-Mikoto, who was a grandson of Japan's first emperor and the brother of Emperor Suizei, the second monarch on the traditional list of emperors. In the same period that Emperor Jimmu was establishing his palace at Kashihara at the foot of Mount Unebi in Yamato province,Tateiwatasu was sent to Aso where he helped establish a number of agricultural communities; and later, he is said to have built a palace at Miyagi.
The original location of the shrine is uncertain because it was destroyed and rebuilt many times in or near the crater of Aso-zan. The present buildings date only from the Tenpo era (1830-1843).
Aso was the chief Shinto shrine (ichinomiya) of the old Higo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Kumamoto Prefecture.
From 1871 through 1946, the Aso Shrine was officially designated one of the Kanpei-taisha, meaning that it stood in the first rank of government supported shrines.
