Haunting History of: Kennall Vale, Ponsanooth,Cornwall, England, U.K
Ponsanooth (Cornish: Pons an Woodh, meaning bridge at the stream) is a village,The river kenall flowing cascading past an(Scheduled Monument) abandoned gunpowder works that is now a Cornwall Wildlife Trust reserve.
The expression a walk through history is an overused one but at Kennall Vale that's a good way to put it.
You can still see ruins of mill buildings and old water-wheels there. According to Cornwall Guide, a dramatic incident involved five mill buildings blowing up in 1838.
Part of a roof was found a mile from the premises and one man died of his injuries, leaving a widow and ten children, the blog reads.
It is believed that he is still haunting the place today.
In another explosion a few years later a worker by the name of John Martin was literally blown apart. His head was found around a quarter of a mile away and his other body parts were strewn across the site.
Reports from the time say that part of one roof was found a mile away.
Today this densely wooded valley is as peaceful a place as you could imagine. The only sounds you are likely to hear are the rushing of the water and bird song. A hundred years ago things were somewhat different, for Kennall Vale was the site of the Kennall Gunpowder Company.

Whilst it might seem strange to locate a gunpowder factory in woodland in the middle of nowhere the site was quite carefully chosen. The fast flowing River Kennall provided a source of power as it cascades down the valley. This was diverted into leats which in turn powered waterwheels. Obviously steam power, with its need to burn coal would not have been a good idea in a gunpowder mill.
There were other reasons the site was chosen; not only where the gunpowder mills set in woodland, but the company planted many trees. These were positioned between the various mill buildings so as to help absorb the force of a potential explosion.
The surviving remains at this gunpowder works include a number of especially unusual and rare components, most notably the exceptionally well-preserved sequence of early mid-19th century incorporating mills, the early stove house, the corning mills with their underground wheel pits, the 1844 glazing house, and the unusually complex and intact leat system. The packing house is a unique survival amongst extant remains of gunpowder works nationally. Within its regional context, this was one of the earliest gunpowder works to be established in Cornwall, only two years after the first such factory had started production in the county in 1809. The physical remains of the Kennall Vale gunpowder works are complemented by a wealth of historical sources documenting the development of the company that operated them. These sources show clearly the close integration of the works' fortunes with the regional economy and with technological advances in explosives.

Kennal Vale is a hidden valley nestling in the countryside between Redruth and Falmouth that was once home to one of the largest and most complete gunpowder works to be found anywhere in Britain, producing explosives for use in the nearby mines. Kennal Vale is now managed as a nature reserve by Cornwall Wildlife Trust. Rusty, moss-coated water-wheels, broken millstones and the creepy ruins of massive granite mill buildings all help to create an atmopshere charged with history. Information boards detail an appalling accident that occurred in 1838 when five mill buildings blew up in succession. Part of a roof was found a mile from the premises and one man died of his injuries, leaving a widow and ten children.
