In 1898 a farmer in Kensington MN found an artifact that now proves Scandanavians were in Minnesota in 1362. The Runestone now rests at the Runestone Museum in Alexandria, MN. Columbus discovered America in 1492, LOL.

Messages in Stone: Runic Carvings in North America and Oklahoma | Mark Kinders | TEDxUCO
Oklahoma hosts one of the largest concentrations of carved Runic artifacts in North America. More than 6,000 Runes are found worldwide, and present a history of Scandinavian life and exploration in the Medieval Age. This TedX lecture explores scholarly efforts to determine the authenticity of North American and Oklahoman stones, and popular television entertainment programs and corporate efforts to capitalize on a different story line.
Mark Kinders is the Vice President of Public Affairs at UCO. In a private pursuit, he is the vice president of the American Association for Runic Studies. AARS investigates North American runes in affiliation with Uppsala University in Sweden, and the Swedish Council of America, and partners with the Smithsonian Institution and other universities. Kinders holds a master’s in history (University of Wisconsin-River Falls) and a doctorate in higher education (University of Arkansas).

Knocking off my 50 state bucket list by driving the American highways. Minnesota is off my list. This ancient stone would say that the Vikings were on North American long before Columbus.

This show will introduce you to a discovery of a dictionary for Futhark runic and a set of grammar rules that will allow you to read the message on the Kensington rune stone. It has not been determined yet if this will prove to be the equivalent of the Rosetta stone for Futhark runic. Time will tell as people are able to work with the dictionary.
Norse Literautre | The Kensington Runestone
The Kensington Runestone is slab of greywache stone that was discovered in Kensington, Minnesota by Olof Ohman in 1898. The stone slab bears a runic inscription that recounts the events that befell a party of Scandinavian explorers who came to North America during the 14th century - with the events dated to 1362. This artifact now rests in the Runestone Museum in Alexandria, Minnesota.
The Kennsington Runestone's authenticity has been debated since its discovery. Most historians have come to the conclusion that this artifact is a 19th century hoax. Several of the runes are transcribed in a format that wasn't the standard during the medieval period and the language of the inscription is similar to Modern Swedish, not Old Swedish. There is also limited archaeological and documented evidence that indicates that the Vikings could have traveled or establish colonies deep into the New World.
However, there are many laypersons and scholars who still think that the Kensington Runestone is an authentic artifact and proves that the Vikings explored the New World beyond their settlement of Vinland in Newfoundland, Canada.
