Kenton Co. Public Library gives away eclipse safety glasses
ERLANGER, Ky. (WKRC) - We are a little more than a week away from the big solar eclipse and the Kenton County Public Library is giving away eclipse safety glasses.
Saturday they were handed out at the Erlanger branch library.
Several public libraries in the Tri-State are holding eclipse watch gatherings and are giving away free glasses.
The event drew quite a crowd.
The line was out the door and more than 600 pairs of glasses were handed out.
It was part of an eclipse prep program with the Cincinnati Observatory.
The eclipse is set to happen Monday, August 21.

Beloved librarian who ran Kenton County’s libraries for 41 years dies at 88
COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) - The architect of Northern Kentucky's modern library system has passed away.
Mary Ann Mongan, who ran the Covington and Kenton County libraries for 41 years, died on Sunday.
Her legacy is open to the public on the shelf, and online.
Colleagues describe Mary Ann Mongan as a “librarian's librarian.” It should come as no surprise then you can still find the Covington library board minutes of her 1958 hiring in her library system.
“We don't see librarians like her anymore,” said Wayne Onkst, the former Kentucky State Librarian.
A Cincinnati woman, hired in Covington to run a small, underfunded library, had a few ideas of her own.
After 9 years on the job, Mongan took a bold step.
“She pulled together the political leaders and community leaders and raised the petition that allowed us to form the Kenton County Library in 1967,” said Dave Schroeder, the Kenton County Library Director.
Within 10 years, a new Covington library was built, so was the first Erlanger branch, the predecessor of what is now Kentucky’s busiest branch library. She ran the libraries from 1958 to her retirement in 1999.
“So, over that 40 years, what she was able to produce and what she was able to maintain and grow was phenomenal,” said Onkst.
What she started with one lending library and a staff of 12 is now three modern branches with a staff of nearly 200.
Mary Ann Mongan was all about books, but when libraries changed to be about things other than books, she changed too.
She embraced modern technology, but also people. She grew talent. Wayne Onkst took over when she retired and went on to become the Kentucky State Librarian.
Current director, Dave Schroeder was hired by Mongan as a “book shelver” when he was 18-years-old.
“As a result of that, library directors from all over Kentucky and Ohio worked under her including the library directors in Kenton, Boone and Grant Counties,” said Schroeder.
Mary Ann Mongan died Sunday. She was 88-year-old. Her legacy lives on in a lot of people and places.
The Covington branch bears her name. What she built is there for anyone to check out.

Everyone remembers hearing their favorite story -- as a child listening to dad tell stories before bed, seniors telling stories of their youth or friends recounting a story of their weekend. The Kenton County Public Library is celebrating the joy and power of stories with the second annual Northern Kentucky Storytelling Festival on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21 at the Erlanger Branch Library. Minutes from downtown Cincinnati, the Northern Kentucky Storytelling Festival is easily accessible from anywhere in the Tri-state region.
Appalachian Afternoon at the Library
# A day-long event featuring music and presentations of Appalachian heritage. These programs are in conjunction with the visit to Northern Kentucky and the Erlanger Branch of the Kenton County Public Library by renowned author Sharyn McCrumb, author of The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter. The Mary Ann Mongan Library in Covington presents Bach 'n Thyme and Sunset Dawn, two local music groups who play Appalachian influenced music. The program will also include talks by Professor Danny L. Miller and Professor Rebecca Bailey from Northern Kentucky University. See the program for the performance and lecture times.

Kentucky attorney general in Erlanger to kick off human trafficking task force
Kentucky Attorney General Andy Beshear will be in Northern Kentucky Tuesday morning to promote an initiative he hopes will stop human trafficking. Beshear will introduce his Response Initiative to Guide Human Trafficking Services (RIGHTS) at 9 a.m. at the St. Elizabeth Training and Education Center at 3861 Olympic Boulevard. The taskforce will focus on designing and optimizing community responses to victim-survivors of human trafficking in Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati. In recent years, the office of the attorney general has partnered with several Kentucky organizations as well as state hotels, travel and tourism businesses to develop a program to train hotel and tourism employees on how to recognize and report human trafficking. WCPO will be at the meeting and update this story with more details.

I will soon be 75 and I can honestly say that God has blessed me with the abilities to organize and help education for my entire adult life and to me their is no greater profession for public service than that of a teacher, whether it be in the classroom, Sunday School, Union Shop, private school or public school or home school, or Bible School. A teacher never stops teaching whether in the classroom or in any walk down life's pathway. It is a gift from Jesus the worlds greatest teacher and the lessons or simple but also very complex for it is the Holy Spirits job to convict and God's job to Judge and our job to love. So as a life long teacher I tell you that I love you and so does God and if you read you know either he has or will or is right now knocking on your hearts door but you must invite Jesus into your heart and open the door so that you can make a U turn in life and become a disciple for teaching the greatest lesson I have ever learned from his greatest gift of love and how to share it with the World one soul at a time. Thank you for being a teacher and a educator with love.

Kentucky Local History Trust Fund Grant Ceremony, January 2018
Seventeen history organizations from across the state received grants from the publicly funded Kentucky Local History Trust Fund. They included local historical societies, museums and historic sites, which will use the grants for projects related to collection conservation, education, exhibits and strategic planning. The ceremony was held in the rotunda of the capitol building in Frankfort, Kentucky on January 9, 2018.
Kentuckians can donate to the Kentucky Local History Trust Fund via their state income tax forms.
