Prince Charles and his wife Camila visits the Folklore Museum Kochi, Kerala | Exclusive Video
Prince Charles, Camilla get a glimpse of Kerala culture.
Prince Charles and his wife Camilla Parker Bowles commenced their four-day Kerala visit on Monday by first taking a stroll down the State's rich cultural history at the Kerala Folklore Museum and Theatre at nearby Thevara.
The royal couple were garlanded by the museum owners, Jacob George and his wife Anne George and their two children, who took them on a tour around the private museum, which is a treasure trove showcasing the rich heritage of Kerala. Charles and Camilla were welcomed with flower garlands and a traditional tika on the forehead.
Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall removed their shoes as they entered the museum, declined to take the lift and climbed 50-odd wooden steps of the three-storeyed structure.
Two artistes performed Kathakali, the classical dance-drama of Kerala, depicting the slaying of demon Narakasura in Narakasura Vadham leaving the visitors mesmerised. This was followed by Kalaripayattu (martial art form of the State). The match even had Camilla wincing at one point when one man grabbed his opponent between the legs during a throw.
The show was organised by the Tourism department.
After the performance, Prince Charles asked the Kathakali artists about their costumes which weigh around 35 kg. He wanted to know how they were able to control all their muscles and their extraordinary expressions, the artists said.
The Prince of Wales told them he had enjoyed the programme, but that it was too short, the artistes said.
They also watched a Bharatanatyam performance by 'Paris' Laxmi, a French dancer who has made Kerala her home since 2011 after marrying Kathakali artist Pallipuram Sunil.
The royal couple were pleased with the footwork and facial expressions and they spoke a few words to me in French saying 'unbelievable', Laxmi told PTI after her performance.
The museum houses masks and sculptures in wood, stone and bronze, costumes of traditional and ritual art forms, musical instruments, traditional jewellery, manuscripts on rare medicines and stone age utensils.
Later in the evening, Prince Charles also joined urban planners and city dignitaries to view the signing of an MoU, marking the participation of Aluva, a town near Kochi, in the 'Future Cities' project.
The MoU was signed between Atkins, a British company, and Aluva municipality. The company would undertake a three-year study to prepare a masterplan for the project.
The royal couple also attended a reception for civic and business leaders hosted by the Kerala government.
They also met Head of the Travancore Royal family, Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma.

It features Kerala murals depicting Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the en:Rajas of Kochi. The Mattancherry Palace temple and the (Paradesi (Mattancherry) Synagogue share a common wall
The Palace was built and gifted by the Portuguese as a present to the king of Cochin around 1555. The Dutch carried out some extensions and renovations in the palace in 1663, and thereafter it was popularly called Dutch Palace. The rajas also made more improvements to it. Today, it is a portrait gallery of the Cochin Rajas and notable for some of the best mythological murals in India, which are in the best traditions of Hindu temple art. The landing of Vasco da Gama, the Portuguese explorer at Kappad in 1498 was welcomed by the Kochi rulers. They were given exclusive right to construct factories. The Portuguese repulsed the repeated attacks of the Zamorians and the Cochin Rajas practically became vassals of the Portuguese. The influence of the Portuguese were supplanted by the Dutch and they took over Mattancherry in 1663.[2] Subsequently, the area was taken over by Hyder Ali and still later by the British East India Company

The Mattancherry Palace is a Portuguese palace popularly known as the Dutch Palace, in Mattancherry, Kochi, in the Indian state of Kerala which features Kerala murals depicting portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi. Portraits of the Rajas of Cochin, from 1864 onwards, are displayed in what was once the Coronation Hall. These were painted by local artists in western style. The ceiling of the hall is decorated with floral designs in wood craft. In 1951, Mattancherry Palace was restored and declared a centrally protected monument. The palace is already undergoing a second restoration by the Archaeological Survey of India. The restoration made the historical structure to a building and a museum of an international standard, preserving its originality, yet highlighting the important facets. The palace is an architectural masterpiece showcasing the blend between colonial and Kerala architecture.
