Kerameikos - The cemetery of Ancient Athens, Greece
Kerameikos was the quarter of the potters in Ancient Athens. By the river Eridanos, potters made their ceramic artifacts and distributed them in the market. In 478 b.c. the construction of Athens Themistocleian Walls connected Athens with Piraeus and fortified the city against a Spartan attack.
In here, Pericles delivered one of his most famous funeral orations for the Athenians who have lost their lives fighting in the Peloponessian War.

Kerameikos Ancient cemetery Athens June 2019
Take a walk from Syntagma Square down Ermou Street. Keep going for about half an hour and you will reach the Kerameikos cemetery which ancient Greece was the area where potters lived and worked. It is a most interesting and atmospheric place and when we visited it was very tranquil. It includes the Sacred Way which stretched right from the centre of Athens to Elysius. The museum on site, though small, is well worth a visit.

Wiki: Kerameikos also known by its Latinized form Ceramicus, is an area of Athens, Greece, located to the northwest of the Acropolis, which includes an extensive area both within and outside the ancient city walls, on both sides of the Dipylon (Δίπυλον) Gate and by the banks of the Eridanos River. It was the potters' quarter of the city, from which the English word ceramic is derived, and was also the site of an important cemetery and numerous funerary sculptures erected along the road out of the city towards Eleusis.
The area has undergone a number of archaeological excavations in recent years, though the excavated area covers only a small portion of the ancient dēmos. It was originally an area of marshland along the banks of the Eridanos river which was used as a cemetery as long ago as the 3rd millennium BC. It became the site of an organised cemetery from about 1200 BC; numerous cist graves and burial offerings from the period have been discovered by archaeologists. Houses were constructed on the higher drier ground to the south. During the Archaic period increasingly large and complex grave mounds and monuments were built along the south bank of the Eridanos, lining the Sacred Way.

A visit to Kerameikos in Athens
Kerameikos (Υπότιτλοι στα Ελληνικά - Embedded subtitles in ENG )
Kerameikos was the kerameis’ (potters') quarter of the city. From kerameis derives the English word ceramic.
The site includes an extensive area both within and outside the ancient city walls. The Inner Kerameikos was the former potters' quarter within the city and Outer Kerameikos covers the cemetery and also the Dēmósion Sēma (public graveyard) just outside the city walls, where Pericles delivered his funeral oration in 431 BC. The cemetery was also where the “Sacred Way” began, along which the procession moved for the Eleusinian Mysteries. The quarter was located there because of the abundance of clay mud carried over by the Eridanos River.
After the construction of the city wall, the Sacred Way and a forking street known as the Street of the Tombs again became lined with imposing sepulchral monuments belonging to the families of rich Athenians, dating to before the late 4th century BC. The construction of such lavish mausolea was banned by decree in 317 BC, following which only small columns or inscribed square marble blocks were permitted as grave stones.
There is also a small well organized museum. The Kerameikos Museum houses the most extensive collection of burial-related artifacts in Greece, varying from large-scale marble sculpture to funerary urns, stelae, jewelry, toys etc. The original burial monument sculptures are displayed within the museum, having been replaced by plaster replicas in situ. The museum incorporates inner and outer courtyards, where the larger sculptures are kept.

Athens Heritage Walks Video Disclaimer
These videos are unedited recordings of a series of guided walking tours, called Athens Heritage Walks, sponsored by the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation. The first of these tours were developed in 2009; additional tours have been added over the years. The tour process begins when a well-known local figure is invited to develop a guided tour of a historic neighborhood or area. The Foundation does not provide a script but rather asks the guide to develop his/her own script based on his/her knowledge and expertise. The Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation does not guarantee the accuracy of these accounts nor necessarily support opinions expressed by the guides. ACHF provides research assistance when asked and handles all tour logistics. One of the goals of the tours is to capture the personal memories of the guides and so the tours tend to be a mixture of facts, conjecture and anecdotal accounts, the degree of which varies from guide to guide. We hope you enjoy them.

This cemetery is perhaps the largest, most important outdoor sculpture gallery in the country. This is where members of the Greek society elite are interred including heroes of the Greek War of Independence, politicians, intellectuals, artists, scientists and national benefactors. Walking through the cemetery is like taking a journey through the history of 19th and 20th century Greece.
