Hanoi, Vietnam: Traveling for $20 A Day - Ep 13
In Hanoi, Vietnam, I got a buffet breakfast, beef pho, bun cha, ice cream, Vietnemese egg coffee, sugarcane juice, four Hanoi beers, a room in a hostel, and explored the entire Old Quarter and western side of the city, all in one day - all for LESS THAN 15 DOLLARS. Seriously, this is the cheapest city I've ever visited.
($20 USD = 445,000 Vietnamese dong)
Here's how I spent my money in one full day in Hanoi:
Hostel bed - 112,000 dong
Breakfast buffet - FREE (included with hostel)
Ice cream - 8,000
Egg coffee - 17,000
Beef pho - 30,000
Fried dough snack - 7,000
Temple of Literature - 30,000
Sugarcane juice - 10,000
Ho Chi Minh Complex - 40,000
Bun Cha - 35,000
Four beers @7k/beer - 28,000
TOTAL COST = 319,000 dong ($14.26 USD)
Oh, and one more thing: the egg coffee I drank in this video is seriously the best coffee I've ever had in my entire life. If you visit Hanoi, you MUST TRY egg coffee.

Where I stayed: Chien Hostel
This hostel had the friendliest staff I've ever encountered. They were so happy to help me make this video and show me around Hanoi. I couldn't have had such an amazing yet frugal day without the help of the Chien Hostel staff. Shout out to Chun and Tuan!

About Me:
My name is Kevin Cook. I'm originally from Dallas, TX, but I've been living and traveling in Asia since 2013.
After graduating from university in 2011 and working a few unfulfilling jobs, I saved enough money to move to Asia and work as a teacher for a few years. That opportunity allowed me to travel around and experience new foods and cultures, and ignited a passion for blogging and making videos.
Now I travel full-time and make videos with the goal that I can encourage YOU to pursue your own dream of overseas traveling and living.
If you enjoy watching my videos, you can help me grow my channel by giving my videos a 'thumbs up', leaving a comment, sharing them, and subscribing!

HOW EXPENSIVE IS VIETNAM? Exploring Hanoi
Vietnam Trip: Hanoi (part 1)

HANOI Vietnam (Travel Vlog)
Having no winter clothes in a 14 degrees temperature is difficult but that makes this experience fun and memorable. Vietnam is the kind of place where you can say you want to go back there again one day. Hanoi Vietnam is one nice city and oh Ha Long Bay, the best.

This is part 2 of my dad's surprise trip to Vietnam! Today we got out of the city of Hanoi and took a luxury cruise through the gorgeous Ha Long Bay. Next we traveled to the beautiful countryside and stayed in a bamboo hut in the middle of a rice field surrounded by mountains. We rented motorbikes for the day and explored the untouched beauty of the area and witnessed local life. This was an unforgettable trip that we never wanted to end!

Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this YouTube channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

5 Things I Love About Vietnam ???????? Hanoi Travel
5 Things I Love About Vietnam
In today's travel vlog (Vietnam Vlog), I discuss the 5 things I love about Vietnam. If you have done any kind of Vietnam travel, many of these things will probably ring true with you. I stayed mostly in Hanoi, Vietnam this last month.
There are so many things to do in Vietnam and so many things to do in Hanoi. If I tried to make a What To Do in Hanoi video, it would have 100 things and be hours long! But these are the 5 that really stood out to me.
Here are the 5 Things I Love About Vietnam in no particular order:
The Cost: I’m staying in Hanoi, Vietnam and it is so cheap.
1 bedroom cause between $350 to $600 a month for a western-style apartment with AC. Wifi and electricity included.
Coke: $0.036
Fresh Juice Smoothie: $2.00
Beer: $1.07
Coffee: $0.72
A meal is easily under $5 - usually way under $5
Nomad/Expat can live a comfortable western lifestyle for around $$900-$1200 a month
Locals live her for an around $450 a month.
No Coins: Vietnam ditched coins in 2011! I don’t know how others feel about coins but I hate them. The only have paper money and this makes life so much easier. The prices are in 1,000 dong increments.
The Coffee: Vietnamese coffee is very strong and flavorful coffee. The French may have introduced coffee to Vietnam - but the Vietnamese have taken it to the next level. Vietnamese Drip Coffee with Condensed Milk: Traditionally made by pouring condensed milk into a cup and then placing the drip coffee filter on top - once the drip coffee joins the milk..you mix it! Egg Coffee: Egg Coffee is made by whipping egg yolks with sweetened condensed milk. This creamy concoction is placed on top of very strong Vietnamese drip coffee. The egg and condensed milk concoction turn the coffee into a creamy dessert that tastes like a cross between a Cadbury Egg and Tiramisu. You have to try it! Coconut Coffee: Basically the same as the condensed milk, Vietnamese drip coffee but you add coconut milk and blend it all with ice. Sweet, strong and cold - perfect for the brutally hot summers in Hanoi!
The Food: I could make a video just on Vietnamese food and Hanoi food. There are so many wonderful dishes to try. I'm not even going to try to pronounce them all but I’ll put a list of foods you must try in the comments. If you have a favorite Vietnamese food that you think everyone should try - please comment below. There are so many great mom and pop places - just pick on and pull up a little seat and tell them to bring you their specialty or most ordered item. 9 times out of 10 you’ll find your new favorite dish. If you want Vietnamese street food and specifically Hanoi street food - go check out the Hanoi night market!
The People: Vietnamese people are so friendly and welcoming. They love their country and want to share it with others. Not in an obnoxious nationalist kind of way but in an open and inviting way.
I stayed mostly in the Hanoi Old Quarter and really enjoyed it. Next time I visit Vietnam, I'd like to explore more of Hanoi and venture to central and southern Vietnam. If you have any recommendations, please comment below.

Hanoi has changed so much in the last few years. Not only is the city become much more convenient (There are shops to buy clean water! hooray!) - People seem to be much friendlier and there was not a single city wide black out when we were there!
