Real Flight 1942 UPF-7 WWII Waco Trainer Biplane - Key West, FL
A Dream come true....just a few days ago I prayed that God would grant me a open cockpit biplane flight one day...while on a Cruise to Key West, we were going to rent a Cessna to fly around the island but while waiting for our Instructor, we saw the trailer for Key West Biplanes and took the flight of a life time. It was eerily smooth, no wind or bumps, just completely calm air. We were truly flying in what could easily be a museum piece from WWII. The United States Army Air Corps - Adopted the Waco UPF-7 as the PT-14 trainer.
11:11 ***We got to fly over the US Army Special Forces Combat Diver School***
The Waco UPF-7 is an unusual airplane. This is not due to any outstanding technical features but to timing. A relatively obsolete design, it was built in quantity at a time when the open cockpit biplane trainer for civilian use was virtually extinct. Even then, it slipped into service unnoticed since it had no significant new features to arouse the interest of the contemporary aviation press.
Production of commercial biplane trainers virtually ended in Depression years of the early 1930s, and new low-powered monoplanes rapidly took their place in the schools and in private aviation. Only the Army and Navy were principal customers for biplane trainers in succeeding years. While Waco did not have a share of this market, it was one of the few firms that continued to supply open cockpit biplanes to private owners of the mid-1930s, a group comprising what could be considered a custom trade. Yet the UPF-7, introduced in the late twilight of the biplane era, was built in greater quantity than any single Waco model that preceded it. Approximately 600 came out of the Troy, Ohio factory between 1937 and 1942.

Battle of the Conch Republic | Key West, FL
Today we stopped at the Coral Castle and then drove down to Key West to (unknowingly) catch the Great Battle of the Conch Republic.
Key West Secession and Great Battle History (paraphrased):
In March 1982, the US set up a roadblock on the only road into the keys (in hopes to catch drugs) but it really just seriously inconvenienced locals and discouraged tourists from going to the Keys. So, Key West staged a mock-rebellion on April 23 where their military (just some locals on a boat) attacked the US Coast Guard Cutter with water balloons, conch fritters (delicious!), and stale Cuban bread in a mock-effort to secede. The Coast Guard squashed the rebellion by spraying them with fire hoses. The military surrendered and then demanded foreign aid (which they're still waiting for). Every year since, on the week surrounding April 23, they reenact the battle and have lots of fun events to celebrate their independence.
By the way, shortly after the battle, the roadblock was removed. :)
You should go. It's fun. Check here for dates and times:

Conch Republic, Key West, FL A day in the life
Please visit our 400+ world themed stores at the following link:
The Conch Republic (República de la Concha) is a micronation declared as a tongue-in-cheek secession of the city of Key West, Florida from the United States on April 23, 1982. It has been maintained as a tourism booster for the city since. Since then, the term Conch Republic has been expanded to refer to all of the Florida Keys, or, that geographic apportionment of land that falls within the legally defined boundaries ofMonroe County, Florida, northward to 'Skeeter's Last Chance Saloon' in Florida City, Dade County, Florida, with Key West as the nation's capital and all territories north of Key West being referred to as 'The Northern Territories'.[4]
While the protest that sparked the creation of the Conch Republic (and others which have occurred since then) have been described by some as tongue-in-cheek, they were motivated by frustrations over genuine concerns. The original protest event was motivated by a U.S. Border Patrolroadblock and checkpoint which greatly inconvenienced residents and was detrimental to tourism in the area.
The Conch Republic celebrates Independence Day every April 23 as part of a week-long festival of activities involving numerous businesses in Key West. The organization—a Sovereign State of Mind, seeking only to bring more Humor, Warmth and Respect to a world in sore need of all three according to its Secretary General, Peter Anderson—is a key tourism booster for the area.

Key West History - Jan. 22, 1926 - The First Luxury Hotel Opens in Key West
Despite having decades in the late 1800's where Key West had the highest amount of wealth per-capita, as well as being the largest city in Florida, it wasn't until 1926 that Key West experienced its first taste of luxury.
Having confirmed its status as a bonafide city by re-inventing itself after the collapse of the wrecking industry, Key West continued to draw an elite class into its vortex. Politicians, Heads of State, writers and more celebrities than you could imagine were making Key West a destination of choice!
During this time, Key West also began making a concerted effort to promote itself as a tourist destination. However, until 1926, there were really no true luxury accommodations to speak of. There were plenty of lavish private homes of the rich and well-heeled, but not all wealthy tourists had access to them.
The LaConcha Hotel was really the first of its kind in Key West. It was a true luxury hotel, complete with private bathrooms, marble tile and it even had an elevator. The LaConcha remains the tallest building on the island today.
Located in the heart of the Duval St. Historic district, it is an icon for locals and tourists alike. After its opening, the LaConcha has a history of hosting many famous people, and it remains a favorite spot to view the island - from the top of the tallest building on the island!
You can check out the LaConcha Hotel at Book a stay and come see us!
The LaConcha Hotel is one of the few hotels in Key West that have attained the distinction of being on the National Register of Historic Places, as well as being inducted into the Historic Hotels of America program. There are strict requirements to attain both of these designations. The LaConcha has managed to preserve its history and evolve as a modern destination.
It was today, January 22, 1926 that the LaConcha Hotel first opened its doors to the public. There was entertainment and a private dinner attended by 175 well-connected Key Westers!
And that's what happened Today in Key West History.
