늦은 저녁, 추운 날씨에도 어른 아이 할 것 없이 많은 사람들이 밖에서 저녁 시간을 즐기고 있다. 이곳 사람들은 정말 매서운 추위에 단단히 단련이 된 듯하다. 스케이트를 타느라 겉옷도 던져버리고 게다가 팔도 걷어 올린 것이 춥기는커녕 덥나보다. 다른 한 편에는 사람들이 굉장히 많이 모여있다. 심지어 응급차도 보이고, 안전요원까지. 무슨 일이라도 난 걸까? “여기 사람들이 왜 이렇게 많아요? 크레셰니예, 세례기념일이라는 명절이라서요. 얼음 구멍에 한 번 들어갔다가 나오면 일 년 내내 건강하고 행복하게 살 거예요. 이것은 러시아 정교뿐만 아니라 근성도 확인할 수 있어서 좋아요” 크레셰니예는 러시아 정교회에서 매년 하는 행사로, 예수가 요단강에서 세례를 받았던 것처럼 강에 몸을 담가 악운을 쫓는 의식이다. 사람들은 강가나 호수에 십자가 모양으로 구멍을 내서 그 물 안에 머리를 3번 담근다. 손끝만 닿아도 얼어붙을 추위에 옷을 벗고 몸을 담근다니 대단하다. 순간적으로 나오는 방향도 헷갈릴 만큼 맹렬한 추위지만, 그래도 사람들의 의식행렬은 끝이 없다. 얼음 물 속에서 여유를 즐기고 버티는 사람도 있다. 걱정하는 안전요원의 손길도 뿌리치는데, 다행히 안전하게 걸어 나온다. 자정이 지나자 취재진도 보이고 사람들이 더 많아졌다. 그 중에 눈에 띄는 한 아이. 운동까지 하며 몸을 푸는데, 첫 도전인지 많이 긴장한 듯 보인다. 한 발 한 발 입수는 성공~ 그러나 잠수 한 번에 아이가 혼이 나가버렸다. 완벽한 성공은 아니지만 성인도 쉽지 않은 도전인데, 아이의 도전 자체만으로도 충분히 멋졌다. 얼마나 추운지 막 나온 사람의 몸에서 그 냉기가 가시질 않는다. “안 추워요?” “아니요. 너무 좋아요” “매년 해요?” “매년 하는데 원래 우크라이나에서 해요” “우크라이나에서요?” “네” “이렇게 하신 지 얼마나 됐어요?” “오래 됐어요. 7년 됐어요” 죄를 씻고 악귀를 쫓는 사람들의 세례의식은, 자정이 넘어 새벽까지 계속 이어졌다.
