KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK - Thailand’s Best Day Trip, Cheow Lan Lake
Just two hours north of Krabi Thailand, Khao Sok National Park is hands down Thailand’s best day trip! Don’t miss Cheow Lan Lake where you can boat around massive limestone cliffs and glistening turquoise water. Khao Sok is truly the best of Thailand.
We hired a private boat for 1500 Thai Baht (around $45 USD) for a two hour tour around Cheow Lan Lake. There were barely any other tourists out on the lake so we really felt like we had the entire national park to ourselves. Our boat driver took us around Khao Sok Lake where we stopped at the Khao Sok floating bungalows to take a swim. That’s where Ryan decided to throw fish food in the water surrounding me so about 1,000 huge fish swarmed around me to eat! That was gross.
Other than the near “DeathbyFish”, we urge you to go to Khao Sok National Park because it is easily one of the best things to do in Thailand. Khao Sok is located in Surat Thani, about two hours north of Krabi Thailand and 3 hours north of Phuket. The close proximity to southern Thailand’s main tourist destinations makes it perfect for day trips in Thailand.
The popularity of Khao Sok National Park is just beginning, so it’s still considered one of the unexplored Thailand hot spots. Most locals we spoke to had never been to the park. If a day trip to Khao Sok is too ambitious for you, there are some amazingly immersive places to stay in Khao Sok including a handful of Cheow Lan Lake bungalows to choose from and mountain resorts deep within the national park’s forest.
We stayed in Krabi for 30 days and we wanted to explore more than the typical tourists islands that everyone heads to, so Cheow Lan Lake was a perfect Thailand island alternative.

How to do KHAO SOK National Park INDEPENDENTLY
After visiting Samui seeing some friends we decided to go visit Khao Sok National Park before we head to Chiang Mai. It was the best decision we made!!
We took a ferry from Samui to mainland Surat Thani, from here we took a 2 hour mini bus journey to the national park. This ticket cost us 750 bhat (one way) including the bus transfer from hotel to pier in Samui.
The mini bus dropped us at the bus stop just 1.5km from Khao Sok town, a 50 bhat taxi on the back of a pick up took us to our hotel Country Resort.
For £17 a night we stayed in an AC room with free access to their outdoor pool.
The journey to the lake took just over an hour, recommend getting to the lake before the mini buses arrive so around 9am. Just a note that when leaving at 8am or before there is heavy fog/mist along the journey which is cold! So wear long trousers and a jumper in the morning as its a long journey to be cold. But as soon as the sun breaks through it warms up QUICK!

* Moped hire - 300 per day
* Fuel - 100 (enough to Cheow Lan Lake and back)
* National Park (including lake) entrance fee - 300 per person
* long tail boat hire for 3 hours - 2000
The lake was one of the most beautiful sites we have seen and highly recommend driving yourself to the lake and back. Avoid big tours where your crammed on a mini bus then boat!
In the end hiring our own boat and total day costs including the moped was cheaper than a day tour!

Khao Sok National Park is located in Surat Thani province in Thailand. Its land area is 739 km², and it includes the 165 square kilometer Cheow Lan Lake dammed by the Ratchaprapha dam. The park comprises the largest area of virgin forest in Southern Thailand and is a remnant of rainforest which is older and more diverse than the Amazon Rainforest.
Khao Sok National Park is a jungle reserve in Southern Thailand. It is one of the most beautiful wildlife reserves in Thailand.

If your leg muscles have atrophied after one too many days of beach-bumming, consider venturing inland to the wondrous Khao Sok National Park. Many believe this lowland jungle -- the wettest spot in Thailand -- to be over 160 million years old, making it one of the oldest rainforests on the globe. It features dramatic limestone formations and waterfalls that cascade through juicy thickets drenched with rains and morning dew. A network of dirt trails snakes through the quiet park, allowing visitors to spy on the exciting array of indigenous creatures.

Visit this enchanted lake and get personal guided tour or kayak or canoe through the still waters in search for wildlife, flora and birds.

I have known him since 1997 and regularly visit each year.
Is Khao Sok the most beautiful part of Thailand?
Khao Sok is an incredible national park in Surat Thani Province in Southern Thailand. The area has some of the best preserved tropical evergreen forest (aka jungle) in Thailand. The Cheow Lan reservoir lets you get in by boat and get way closer to the jungle than you would otherwise be able to which means you can see some really incredible wildlife. We didn't see any but if you take a proper multi-day kayaking trip it's probably the best place in Thailand to see elusive wild elephants in a way that's safe for humans and animals alike.
The limestone karsts here are reminiscent of areas of Southern China, Halong Bay in Vietnam, and Krabi in Thailand. People often assume photos from here are in Krabi and that the lake is the sea, but it's all fresh water. For us, it's got to be a top five most beautiful place in Thailand and we can never really get sick of being here. For everything you need to know about visiting, click the link below to our website.

My guide takes me via longtail boat to a mountain on which we hike through a jungle to the top of a rocky cliff, to the sound of Gibbons and the calls of the endangered Helmeted Hornbill ...! This has been a really cool adventure. We head back across Cheow Lan lake with some amazing scenery, and I prepare to head off to a tropical island...

Khao Sok National Park is a kind of nature retrreat for all, set in the surrounds of one of Thailand's man made dams the hill tops and moutains are now islands and lakes Lakes filled with fish and the area is perfect for trekkiing and hiking while taking in the tranquility of the higher mountain air. I came here with my partner in crime Chef Palm Amawat to get familiar with some of the dishes that are special to this area. Turmeric Fish, traditional Yellow Curry and Tom Saab along with a very crisy fried carp fish. I can tell you now it was delicious. Later we take a boat across the lake, it is an amazing area and I can only recommend visiting it one day.

CHEOW LAN LAKE TOUR STARTS AT 07:44.
We fly down from Bangkok to Surat Thani and then bus it over with the locals (and a chicken!?) to Khao Sok National Park.
The next day we go on a one day lake tour of Cheow Lan Lake, the artificial lake that spans 185 sq km with Kwai Jungle Experience. With stunningly beautiful limestone cliffs towering over emerald waters it's clear why so many are now flocking there to visit. Follow along as we sightsee around the lake, visit floating bungalows and trek through the rainforest to a pitch black cave.
After a long day we eat an absolutely mind-blowing meal at Wind Song restaurant & bar, a fantastic restaurant in Khao Sok offering a large menu, full bar and proper espresso coffee. Get the massaman curry - you will not regret it. Also, the owner is the most welcoming and friendliest person we have met so far on our travels - he really is amazing.
